Nintendo has announced the Switch Lite, a brand new model for Switch.

It's the cheaper way to get a "Switch", but by doing so you are losing a lot of good features from the original console. Personally I would prefer if they simple sold a version of the original console, but without the dock and with Joy-cons tha don't feature those sensors. The consumer would get more or less the same device and the savings would be almost the same, but there would still be the option to easy "upgrade" for the original experience.

Yeah, this isn't for me. However, it's not like Nintendo doesn't have a history of releasing more budget versions of their systems. Case in point, the 2DS was a thing and I think it was successful. Moreover, this looks like it is better optimized for handheld gaming with its better battery life, so for people who want a Switch for that aspect I can see this doing alright. While tabletop mode isn't a thing either, not having detachable joycons means having less components to concern oneself with.

This would play more like a traditional handheld that can sync up with other Switches for a more traditional handheld-type multiplayer experience, although singleplayer gamers are clearly the market here. Looks like Nintendo is continuing another marketing gimmick by having it in multiple colours too (no red or black options though?). I'm going to assume children and more casual gamers who don't want to overspend on a system and aren't concerned about the missing features are the intended audience here. That or people who insist that the portable aspect is the Switch's best asset.

What? HD Rumble is basically advanced haptic feedback, which is far more accurate and useful than rumble. Rather than just a vibration, it can be used to simulate how things feel. It's not unnecessary, and next gen systems will likely be using some form of advanced haptic feedback.

Seems to me they're chasing a portable form factor and price point. You're right; it makes no sense to buy it instead of a full Switch if you're going to end up buying those extra peripherals. Only the smaller size would remain as a selling point, if that's something you want.

I can also see the Lite as a second Switch, maybe for kids in the family. If the joycons from Daddy Switch can be paired with the Lite without too much hassle, it would fit in well with that scenario.

If the sides can't be detached, why didn't they fix the layout? The right control stick on the normal Switch is painful to use because the layout also had to be usable as a JoyCon. Now for Switch XL with capabilities not present on either and the segregation of titles going forward. Should be great. Plus a price point above the original Switch.

Missing features in the Lite guarantee a segregated experience already. Then once the "Switch XL" comes up you'll see games exclusive to "Switch XL" that will not work on the Lite nor launch model. As Nintendo already did with the 3DS line.

Why would anyone buy Switch now knowing a cut down revision is coming followed by a "XL"? It was stripping features going from 3DS to 2DS just to tack in things like the second analog stick. Because they didn't want to lower the cost of 3DS thus the "budget" 2DS. Then they were able to increase costs over the original 3DS when going XL.

All while attempting to find mandatory ways for individuals to buy a new model while reaping more profits.

The Lite won't be switching as there's no dock for TV play.

Plus the dock separately is $100. So you could effectively spend the same amount if you want TV play to still lose features of the launch Switch.

And the base Switch will become the stepchild. Forgotten in the name of more profit, or that's Nintendo's hope.

EDIT: Nintendo confirmed Switch Lite will not be compatible with the dock. So no switching as an extra cost either. In other words the "switch" from portable to handheld is eliminated with Switch Lite. Therefore "switching" and the dock were the gimmicks. Like 3D was going from 3DS to 2D'S & 2DS could not be a 3DS Lite. It lacks 3D.

There's no way Nintendo was going to change the name of this device. It's a version of the Switch even though it doesn't have one of the features that goes with the switch name. If they did change the name that would be a dumb move. The switch lite isn't compatible with TV play so if you buy a dock and you don't have the original switch you'll be spending money for no reason. The switch lite is for the handheld only gaming crowd that only owned a 3ds or a Vita. There's no TV option for this version of the switch. DO NOT BUY A DOCK EXPECTING TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE SWITCH LITE ON A TV.

On the brightside it will be cheaper from the original switch and has a greater battery life.
Personally this version does not appeal to me. I prefer the original one. But kudos to you if you are interested in this version. Have fun

There's zero guarantee Switch Lite will play all preexisting or upcoming games. Particularly with the prospect of a "XL" model said to also come.

As DillyDilly said above some preexisting games will not work with the Switch Lite without an additional purchase. Namely because of the removal of motion control and the JoyCon change.

If they did that then those games will most likely not be playable on the original switch since they are basically the same thing. The double screen is what gives the console the best experience not the res, remember when you had to blow the mic to make wind to sail, or how you had to fold the console to mark a stone in the map, the pen, one sreen you investigate or draw while the other as the main plot, some games had you play with the screen in vertical mode, that was innovation, fun, and news ways to play, not to mention the retro compatibility.

They aren't robbing anyone of anything since the price point is cheaper and they made it clear what features were taken out to make it a cheaper handheld only version. At most, you can say it's for young kids but still, more than half the features have been taken out. The longer battery life adds 20-30 more minutes onto the playtime so hardly difference. Hoping around different sites, general reactions are not impressed with this. For the regular prices, you can have more features and options.

While expected, I was hoping for also a home only version, perhaps a Roku sized console w/ the Pro controller for about $100 to $150 (perhaps bundled w/ a game). I’m not interested in on-the-go gaming.

@phils i have the same thoughts regarding a home only version. I don't see why it's such a huge issue for them to just remove the screen, increase performance and sell it. And a pro controller would have been a cherry on top. I'm still going to hold out for it. I really just want to play the new fire emblem and maybe a few other games but i want to play them in style on the couch. Maybe play Astral chain or pokemon too or something idk but i do want a console non mobile version

My thoughts exactly; I’d like to play Breath of the Wild and GRIS, plus the upcoming Zelda and Metroid, but nearly $400 (console + pro controller + tax) is too steep to me for only a few games I’m interested in, especially with a huge backlog of games to play on my PS4. I honestly still would like to see Nintendo go 3rd party; I believe they’re held back by their hardware and their 1st party games would sell like gangbusters on PS4 and other platforms.

Yes, I would also welcome a home only version, it should be easy and cheap for Nintendo do offer such a version. A simple box without a screen, joycons etc. Maybe bundle it with the PRO controller.

Try to find the X1 chip itself for that cheap; A dev kit for the Jetson TX1 (basically the Switch's chip) still costs about $400. I don't think people understand how much goes into business and manufacturing to get things to the consumer as cheap as they are.

It will sell well, Mostly to mothers buying kids Xmas gifts with Pokemon. They will see Switch on both boxes, and then see the $100 price difference and pick up the lite considering they will also be buying the game for $60, they will choose to save a quick buck.

brooklyn ny first place i seen it, 6 switch other than that nowhere else but we also have to remember its only 30 something million switch out there, maybe 1/3 in america and america have a lot of people so more like 1 percent chance you catch random people..........its easier to find people who switch when you go to places where gamers game, but in random very low chance you see them until Switch sell at least 40 million in america alone then it will increase the odds to see it randomly

This should be 50 dollars less considering what they took out. Smaller screen , no dock , no joy cons no hd rumble is 100$ less but to add joycons is 70$ . For a saving of 30$ you lost screen size, dock and hd rumble and gained a negligible amount of battery life.

The switch was a cramp fest for me, I'm expecting the Switch Lite to be worse for me.
For here in the UK, it's priced way to high for it to be great. (£199).
You may as well spend a little extra and get a docked version, with a game bundle (Seen that go for £240 before).

- Still 720p (w/out ability to dock)
- Battery life isn't much better, (which is important when it's the only method to play).
- No HD Rumble or IR camera
- No detachable controllers.
- Still no native Bluetooth support
This is a $150 console at best. My guess is they didn't want to go that low to cannibalize the DS sales.

so it's $329 AUD but i can buy a normal switch with a dock and full feature set for $370 and often on sale for $340

It's meant to be targeting the budget concise but only comes in at $10 AUD less if you find a decent deal on the switch or $40 if you just buy it at a regular price point.

If it was $250 i would understand this more but right now i would say from a value perspective buy the switch every single time.
