Oblivion gets a 4.5GB mod, overhauls all its textures to 4K & 8K using AI techniques

DSOGaming writes: "Modder ‘SilverScrublord’ has released a must-have mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This mod, that weights around 4.5GB in size, overhauls almost all of its textures by using AI Gigapixel. Since this mod is using AI techniques, the improved textures retain the original art design and direction, thus making it essential for all those that want to re-play this RPG."

people still play oblivion?

Morrowind Oblivion and Skyrim will always be revisited over the years, especially with mods

People still play great games?? You see how stupid your sentence sounds, brah?

TeamIcoFan1856d ago

Eh, a couple of these look a tiny bit better but honestly I can't see much of a difference.
I miss the days when modders would work their asses off to make some truly gorgeous texture packs, now they're letting some AI do a half assed job.

IanTH1856d ago (Edited 1856d ago )

There are still plenty of modders who are doing intense work on texture packs. I assume those who use AI are learning how to use it or already use it in their work in some fashion and are applying those techniques in the hobby they love. It's just going to be an option. I don't think the existence of these AI packs is actually being done by those who do full texture work themselves, so it isn't an either/or scenario.

And brighter side could be if enough work gets done with these AI scripts to make the work noticeably better than the original (even if not as good as what is done by hand), then a lot of older games that don't get as much love could get upgrades since it wouldn't take a team of dedicated people to lovingly craft new textures for each and every object in the world. Or perhaps allow them to focus their efforts on the important ones, while leaving the AI to do less important ones (small objects like fruits, or detritus, etc).

I think they can co-exist.

Cause fully modding a game only takes a couple hours...
Especially games like Oblivion, skyrim etc take years to fully overhaul properly
People need to make a living and in 99% of all the mods they don't.
Games are also many times bigger in scope nowadays and every texture that gets modded takes much more work than several years before. Maybe be a bit more respectful to the people who actually do something for the community of a game, unlike some keyboard warriors over here.

This actually looks pretty good. I may have to give it a shot.
Certainly crisper and sharper.

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot27d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator26d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin27d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai27d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis00726d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer26d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer26d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.
