Do Game Reviews Matter Anymore?

Two of March of 2017's top three selling games had a metascore in the low-to-mid seventies. What does this say about the value of game reviews?

Would this article be a thing if Andromeda had reviewed well? No! Let's not kid ourselves. The game was a disappointment

Yui_Suzumiya2517d ago

Mass Effect: Andromeda did review well though. 70's isn't bad by far!

-Foxtrot2517d ago

But for a high up game like Mass Effect where the other 3 games got beyond that...it's pretty bad, especially after the hype.

-Foxtrot2517d ago

It's funny but the defence for the game is strong...people make out like there's nothing wrong with it. I don't get it...I mean is it because it's Mass Effect and the franchise name has rubbed off on them thinking they HAVE to like it in order to be "fans" or something

Godmars2902517d ago (Edited 2517d ago )

That seems to be the modern way of thing. Fanatical fandom and brand loyalty starting just from an announcement or a CG trailer. I mean look at Overwatch, people were cosplaying characters a day after trailers were shown. Are hopelessly devoted to the lore enough it really plays no part in the game. Not before the DLC missions anyway.

Unoriginalplayer2517d ago

I understand the hype behind the game before launch and the high expectations people put on the game. I am a huge Mass Effect fan and I actually enjoyed the game...not because I forced myself to or that I HAD to like it. I enjoy sci-fi and ME:Andromeda hit that spot for a decent sci-fi game. Did it live up to the original game? Not really...but I am not looking for a perfect game every time I sit down to play. If it is enjoyable (with all of its faults) isn't that what gaming is all about? Enjoying the game?

BeOpenMinded2517d ago

Only Mass Effect I couldn't finish. Talking about gameplay features is more important to me. I find myself disagreeing more often than not with 'scores' and glad to see some sites don't use a ten scale etc anymore. That's a good trend I think

AznGaara2517d ago (Edited 2517d ago )

But Zelda is only available on a dead console and a console that just came out... lmfao. I think someone is disregarding the fact that both Ghost Recon and Mass Effect came out on all there major platforms. I mean the number of PS4s alone are double that of both the WiiU and Switch combined. Now suddenly that equates to review scores not mattering anymore? Ah my head hurts.

GamesMaster19822517d ago

Well it might not of got the best reviews but i really liked it. Bloodborne got great reviews but i just did not like it at all. So in a way reviews dont mean that much.

Between being bought off, personal and social/political agenda's?

NovusTerminus2517d ago

Not to those who have purchased the game. Only to those who are looking for more information.

BlakHavoc2517d ago

For the most part, I find that my opinion of a game falls in line with the general consensus.

annoyedgamer2517d ago

Well the review system is borderline bribery. Big reviewers get free stuff, just not cash.

Gaming_Cousin2517d ago

Thats why its best to choose non bias reviewers

Angelin2517d ago

How do you choose non bias reviewers? I open this site and I get a ton of reviews for upcoming games from a wide range of reviewers (ign, gamespot, etc). How do you know which one to trust?

-Foxtrot2517d ago

Some press kits are really well done, they are like unique mini collectors editions

Not to mention some sites actually get the big ass collectors editions given to them for free.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the anti-Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "To get back to the way Ocarina made us feel, it was necessary to reject almost everything about it."

LG_Fox_Brazil131d ago

Ocarina of Time changed my life forever, such a masterpiece

Zeldafan64131d ago

Hard to believe it's 25 years old already.

Cacabunga131d ago

The feeling this game gave me the first time i had my hands on it is indescribable.. i still get the chill from that day..
botw is like a spin off of the series.. it’s fun but with many flaws and the most important which is Zelda formula isn’t there..

FinalFantasyFanatic130d ago

I can't even remember how many times I played through OoT, I finished that game, and collected everything so many times.

Vits131d ago

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.

gold_drake131d ago

but still considered the best of the seties.

i would have liked botw to be more like ocarina.

franwex131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

25 years from today whatever Zelda is out people would too be looking fondly at Breath of the Wild.

Ah the more simple times of the 2020s.

babadivad130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

It isn't...

Nintendo not thinking about older Zelda games, "difficult to say" if classic style will return

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has again commented on the possibility of revisiting the style of past entries in the series – but there are no plans as of now. Speaking with RTL Nieuws, Aonuma said that games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were possible because of what came before them.

Which is very sad. I still wish we could get a zelda like twilight princess, the dark tone and theme in the traditional style. But times have changed and the masses prefer open world sandbox. Smh. Perhaps we can get a proper hd remake of ocarina of time some day.

CDbiggen270d ago

I played 100 hours of Tears of the Kingdom, enjoyed it, but ready for a game like that next.

kythlyn304d ago

If they can bounce between 2D and 3D Mario games, they can bounce between classic and modern Zelda games too. I thought this was a given when the Switch combined a handheld with a primary console.

Inverno304d ago

Then this is where I part ways. I won't disagree with anyone who says that the old formula was getting stale. And I do think BoTW in a few ways was a step in the right direction, but there's way too much good that was left with the old formula in the transition.

CrimsonWing69304d ago

I want it to. I’m sorry, but these new Zelda games I just can’t get into.

Duke19304d ago

Well that sucks. I still love the classic formula WAY more than the Hyrule Engineering Simulator
