Scorpio' 12GB RAM Will Have An Impact on PC Games, Requirements Will Increase:Expeditions Viking Dev

Expeditions: Viking has so far been confirmed only for the PC- and for a lot of developers, with a very specific development work flow or vision, it makes sense to stick with the PC, where the hardware is not fixed, and they can target higher end specifications.

16GB's of GDDR ram? I guess that's possible if you're using sli.

Fishy Fingers2538d ago

Doesn't have to be GDDR. A PC with 8gb vram (GDDR) and 16+ system ram (DDR3/4) will still run rings around Scorpios 12gb (8 after OS) of (shared system AND vram) GDDR.

Lionsguard2538d ago

16gb? Those are rookie numbers.

MyDietEqualsGames2538d ago

So. Do you create using a workstation?

thejigisup2538d ago

16 by performance standards is a bit too middle of the road for this type of discussion. But yes 16gb is amateur hour folks.

My new everyday laptop has 12 and I don't even game on it.

GamingIVfun2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Total ram on my rig is 40gb of ram. The minimum gaming PC has at least 12gb of ram. Not going to make that much difference, if at all. Plus the Scorpio's CPU is going to hold it back.

Things that will be improved from Xbox One to Scorpio will be draw distance, resolution, FPS, lighting and shadows and most games will not have all the improvements at once especially if they go with true 4K resolution which is a resource hog, any honest PC gaming would tell you that the scorpio is a pricey upgrade that probably doesn't go far enough to compete with a mid range PC let alone an enthusiast gaming rig.

The Scorpio will be a great console just don't expect miracles.

343_Guilty_Spark2538d ago

CPU won't hold it back when it's more optimized than a gaming rig.

BigTrain2538d ago

Pretty much the minimum for every hard core PC gamers for the last 8 to 10 years.

Because its shared your vram is what will be increased not system ram. consoles are apus our pcs are not so systerm memory wont be as effected as vram i should know i got 780tis with three gb of vram because consoles decided to up vram allocation to 6gb. so basically scorpio having 12gb is going to increase vram from 4-6gb average to 8-10gb. before the newest consoles 3gb vram sli was fine for pc gaming on ultra consoles came out with 5.5-6gb vram and now 1080p games like gta 5/ shadow of mordor/ watchdogs etc on ultra are taking over 6gb of vram games. so to sum it up you need to be asking yourself what is my vram not system memorybecause that is what is going to increase on pc.

ProjectVulcan2538d ago

A high end PC game today at 4K can use about 6GB of video memory. Scorpio won't likely use any more, because even though it has 12GB only 8GB is available to developers. It has a lot reserved for the OS and multitasking naturally.

Developers still need to use some of that 8GB as system memory too, so it'll be limited to 5, maybe 6GB of memory tops as video memory.

In short as long as you have a graphics card with 6GB of video memory not much will change too soon because of Scorpio. Inevitably memory requirements will climb, but it is only when consoles take a huge step between generations and available RAM goes up tenfold do you see a sudden step in PC requirements.

In the meantime even midrange PC graphics cards now have at least 6GB of memory like the GTX1060. If you buy an RX480/580 then you should also be going for the 8GB versions which aren't hugely expensive. This should be a minimum for anyone serious about playing high end PC games.

MyDietEqualsGames2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

I don't know why people disagreed with you. Bull..

kevnb2537d ago

not to mention most gamers are still using 1080p screens.

HallowedSoul12537d ago

some 1080p games on ultra with max AA already use close to 8gb of vram supersampling technique for 1080p isnt cheap on resorces. also if you havent noticed console games make pc ports lazy on most multiplats. so when it comes to consoles devs use as much vram as they can even if they dont need to, than they port to pc with the same lazy assets.the moment ps4 and xbone came out pc vram requirements magically jumped passed 3gb (man i got screwed on the 780ti classys, highly regret not going with 6gb titans. ) not guarenteeing it with scorpio but just saying be prepared even on 1080p to possibly see vram requirements to skyrocket once scorpio gains multiplat traction.

Snez2538d ago

The same beast that MS have yet to announce a single game to take advantage of the hardware?
So you'll be able to play the existing Xbone library upscaled to a slightly better resolution, nice one. If you honestly had cared about tech at any point before this you would have built your own PC... Which y'know, can already play the majority of the Xbone library at a better resolution already.

KingKionic 2538d ago

Well Microsoft already gave us a screenshot of forza showing it on scorpio.

People who play on xbox already have a libary filled with games they purchased. So all of those games will be enhanced when they buy a scorpio from the start.

You would need to rebuy all those games on PC before even thinking about building a PC.

2538d ago
Snez2538d ago

"People who play on xbox already have a library filled with games they purchased"
Oh, so they already own an existing console to play their existing game library. What a worthwhile purchase of a new system: to play the games they not already own but can already play on their existing console.
I don't know how old you are or how fiscally independent you are but that is probably the biggest waste of money I've ever heard. You can already play these games, you are literally justifying spending several hundred pounds/dollars/euros to make them slightly prettier.

At which point, takes my back to my original argument. If you had cared about graphics in the first place you would have gotten a PC. At least then you factor in additional benefits such as an extended game library, better digital software value and a far more multifunctional system.

Aenea2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

@kionicwarlord

You think all the devs are going to release patches for Scorpio for all their old games? That's not gonna happen, sadly...

PS. the reason you just gave for Xbox One owners not going to PC is also the reason PC and PS4 owners have, to not switch to Scorpio 😉

optimus2538d ago

Your excuse or argument is a bit ignorant seeing as how the same can be said about the ps4 pro...you assume that everyone wants or should get a PC that can do it all but there are consumers like myself that prefers to pop in a game and not fiddle with configurations of any kind. Moreso simply game on their tv...upgraded consoles are simply options for people that want something better to play in front of their TV. Plug and play convenience.

Patriot4Life2538d ago

Wow just wow...are you really that insecure about your PS4 Pro.

LexHazard792538d ago

Another out of touch gamer. No you cant play the majority of Xbox One games on PC. Where did you get that info? Even going forward not all Xbox games will be on PC. Nice try tho...

And to those who wanna disagree, well prove me wrong. List every Xbox One game on PC.

ShottyatLaw2538d ago

And if they had built a PC, they could go spend hundreds to upgrade that PC just so they could run the games in their existing Steam library at higher settings. Same thing many of us have done for years.

You want to project your BS on those gamers, too? Why stop there?!? My new TV plays the same movies and shows that my last set did. Damn! Why did I waste money on this!

Snez2538d ago

I like how many of these comments assume I own a PS4 Pro. Which I do not, I think that is equally a waste of money.

That being said, at the very least there's a large variety of exclusives on Sony systems you'll not be able to pick up on PC. Granted that warrants a purchase of a standard console and not the Pro variant, however with an Xbox a lot of these titles are already on PC.
If you honestly want better graphics and the majority of the Xbox library then it makes more sense as a consumer to just get a PC.

B1uBurneR2538d ago

@$norts, I'm a Xbox gamer lets say i have PC. Ryzen 1700&RX480 New MB & Ram . Add up the cost.

If the Scorpio is cheaper by $150 and devs are going to target that specs directly, head on building from the top down. Trickle down developing? And this article is talking about Scorpio pushing pc gaming forward.

Why would anyone with an existing xbox library migrate to pc?

BLKxSEPTEMBER2538d ago

And exactly what games did Sony announce for the PRO? I'll wait...

donthate2538d ago

E3 is going to be rough for you, Snez.

steveo1234562538d ago

Shiver me timbers I'm off to sail the salty sea too

steveo1234562538d ago

So guess you wont want a ps4 pro then for the same reasons?

4Sh0w2538d ago

Snez,
"If you honestly had cared about tech at any point before this you would have built your own PC... "

- You couldn't be more wrong, I love tech, I gamed on pc for a few years but after awhile I slowly went back to consoles only. I guess cause I work on a PC, so pc gaming started to feel like work, with a console I don't fix settings from game to game, I got my big screen and everything just works out of the box, I know what I get with a console and millions like me think consoles are the best place to play as their is a unified community with the same hardware, same issues, same games. Not bragging but I could easily afford the latest pc in every room of my house, nope I don't want it. I got 4K Tv's now and I'm getting a Scorpio...I don't know why excitement for Scorpio seems to upset people who don't care about Scorpio so much???

Death2538d ago

@Snez,

I own an Xbox as well as a very capable gaming PC. Where can I get the majority of Xbox games to play on my PC. I would absolutely want access to my Xbox library on my PC if it were available.

Aenea2537d ago

Wow! Look at all the disagrees I got! I said something that wasn't glowing about Scorpio! And people say this site is riddled with only Sony fans, hilarious!

It's even more funny when what I said is true! Not ALL games will get a Scorpio patch, devs do not want to put time into that, if you believe they will you live in a fantasy world. The other part is about people not wanting to switch due to their existing library of games, well, if an Xbox owner doesn't want to give up their games library why on earth would anyone else want to do the same? They won't for the most part...

I can see people adding a Scorpio next to other consoles and PC but not as a complete replacement...

Death2537d ago

@Aenea,

People aren't disagreeing because they are biased, they are disagreeing because you don't understand how the hardware will improve games without patching games. It will work like PC where you upgrade your GPU and don't need patches to take advantage of it.

Snez2538d ago

Maybe developers should learn about hardware optimisation and file compression instead of relying on better technology. Requirements and file sizes are already unnecessarily bloated for most AAA games.

yomfweeee2538d ago

Kind of hard to optimize for infinite combinations of hardware.

This is why "underpowered" consoles can put out better looking games.

steveo1234562538d ago

There are plenty of studios that can and have made very highly optimised PC versions. Phantom Pain, GTA5 etc. Sadly by and large most just do lazy ars e ports

I do hope however with both the consoles being x86 based and both now having multiple hardware versions that this might improve, but I wont hold my breath

yomfweeee2538d ago

I didn't say it wasn't possible. Just that it was hard. Extremely hard compared to console.

Pandamobile2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

We already do compress the shit out of everything we can that goes into a game in most cases. AAA games have thousands upon thousands of textures, animations, sound files, video files, compiled programs and other pre-computed data that all need to be accessed as quick as possible from disc or harddrive so most of this stuff can't be decompressed much at run-time.
30-60 GB is going to be pretty standard file size for most AAA games going forward while outliers will hit 100+ GB.
