How Mass Effect: Andromeda Does Away With Character Classes

It’s common knowledge now that unlike previous installments in the Mass Effect series, Mass Effect: Andromeda will not lock players into a specific class. Instead, players will have free rein to assign any skill points that they want towards certain abilities, allowing them to create a specialty that is best suited to their style of gameplay.

And the continued death of Bioware and the loved RPG series Mass Effect continues to be slaughtered.

CorndogBurglar3090d ago

Right, because no other RPG in the history of the world has ever had a system without actual classes....

If you want to be an engineer, guess what? You can only choose engineer abilities. If you want to be strong with biotics then make yourself a biotic powerhouse. Like weapons? Only get soldier type upgrades.

Removing classes does not make this any less an RPG. There are countless rpg's out there with no class system.

Summons753090d ago

But ME was built on the class system. You had one class and your crew had others and you picked the ones you needed for the mission. They are taking out everything that made Mass Effect, Mass Effect. With 3 they removed a lot of resemblance of an RPG and despite promising fans they would go back to the RPG we fell in love with in ME1 they continued to make this dumpster fire.

-Foxtrot3090d ago

Yeah but it kind of defeats the point of the stratergy that went behind picking and choosing your squad mates.

In the first game I was a Vanguard, my engineering was crap so I picked Kaidan to get past this and to fill out other things I picked Wrex. If I chose anyone else then I probably wouldn't have done so well.

I actually took the time to sit down to work all this out and honestly I loved every minute. I had to remember who could do what, what they couldn't do, use cover properly, make sure I knew the cool down to my weapons and so on.

With this game you can't seem to do any of that and for them bigging it up like it's going back to its RPG roots from the first game...well sorry but I call bullshit on that. They could easily show us and not just tell but what they do show has painted a very different picture.

KillBill3090d ago (Edited 3090d ago )

@Summons75 - except you still have class system, just are able to create your own classes with each character. Where you still grab players for each mission based on their abilities... just those abilities are more varied with each player now.

@-Foxtrot - you still have to manage your characters but each will be upgraded based on your chosen path for them. So you just have to memorize how you managed each character and their class.

Christopher3090d ago

From the video, you unlock specific classes. Possibly by recruiting different people. This unlocks the class for Ryder. You then spend skill points on different abilities.

SaveFerris3090d ago

I guess the writers have altered the lore again. This also cuts down the number of playthroughs to about 4 (Paragon/Renegade for both Ryder siblings), instead of multiple playthroughs with different character classes.

phoenixwing3090d ago

@ferris

They removed the paragon/renegade system it's a "dynamic" system now

SaveFerris3090d ago

Interesting. I hope Bioware will show more of this new dialogue system and how it works.

Deadlead3090d ago

I just want love this game, stop making it so hard BioWare!

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast155d ago (Edited 155d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul154d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow154d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake154d ago (Edited 154d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast196d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine196d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast196d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman196d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast196d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein231d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics231d ago (Edited 231d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac230d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992231d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX231d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9231d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne231d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast231d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne231d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog231d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay231d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000231d ago (Edited 231d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon231d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT231d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon231d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139231d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein231d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
