No Man's Sky director Sean Murray doesn't rule out paid DLC - but wants to remain free

NO MAN'S SKY reviews on PS4 and PC have been overwhelmingly positive, and while updates will remain free for now, Sean Murray hasn't ruled out paid DLC if the game requires it in the future.

I'm sorry but there's no chance in hell I would pay more for this game.

Building, better inventory, better item management, more friendly interface, more enemies, random encounters, more secrets, terraforming, more missions, creating solar systems or planets, build robot companions to help you and so on...that should be free because in my opinion it's what the game is missing.

Perjoss2811d ago

so you're saying that people should work for free? lets say they implement all the things you listed and they did them quite well, it would quite easily take them a year to do that stuff, so you're saying that 10 or 15 people should work for a year for free? would you work for a year for free?

YinYangGaming2811d ago

For an indie studio their game is going to sell more copies than a lot of AAA games and still other indie devs do free updates for much smaller games, it's about rewarding the fans who bought your product

-Foxtrot2811d ago

No. I didn't say people should work for free, don't twist something someone says into what you want to see.

Considering Minecraft was free and built it's self up slowly before making people pay a small amount and then continued with free updates I don't see how it's a problem.

We've just paid a lot of money for this, a standard full on retail game..there's no way in hell these guys are working for free.

jwillj2k42811d ago (Edited 2811d ago )

I think hes saying he doesnt feel it is a 60 dollar game as is, which is why he would not give additional dlc money just to complete the experience.

I gave him a disagree because of 2 reasons. 1) There will still be free dlc which could add the things hes upset about, and 2) I dont know what said premium dlc would be, if it makes the game more like rebel galaxy then im all in.

Once they make the universe a 'living universe' in that there is persistence with alien relationships and a better social infrastructure it will change the game. It could reach G.O.A.T. status. They look into what EVE online does.

Yi-Long2811d ago

Not just 'rewarding fans', but basically supporting your own product, in that it becomes (much) better and also keeps selling.

So no, free updates doesn't mean they would be working for free: They would be improving the product, which will result in more new sales.

nix2811d ago

It is an indie game with 60 dollar tag but i think if we are going to get better systems, it should just be an update and not a DLC. I've played this game almost all my waking hours this weekend, so now I'm kind of done. I've found the black hole and in next few days I'll be taking that. I just hope that it's not a fake one.

Fine, but you are not describing DLC. You want improvements to existing features. I agree with you. There is much they can improve, but that is a totally different thing than DLC. With DLC, you typically get new experiences, new items, ships, etc.

-Foxtrot2811d ago

New ships and items are basically what you've just said in your first sentence "improvments to exisitng features"

Ships and items are already in the game...why would you want to pay for a new ship? What possible feature for a ship is going to justify paying for it rather then everyother ship already in the game. Most of the things you'll come up with will just be ship upgrades you can craft and would be added for free.

A free update could easily add a space garage where you can modify your ships colours and create ones from scratch.

Razzer2811d ago

@-Foxtrot

Well....it is just like folks who pay money for better cars in Rocket League, isn't it? That is their choice and I don't have a problem with folks having that option. I'm with you....I wouldn't bother. But I'm hoping what Murray says about paid DLC is more like expansions, new quests/adventures, like the paid side quests in Skyrim/Oblivion.

@Fox

Having the technologies take up inventory slots, is a game play mechanic, it forces the player to decide whether they want to be a fighter or trader. Thus having fighters well equipt to take on space pirates whenever they become an immediate threat, traders would tend to not have that many technoloies installed therefore having enough room to carry more goods but leaving them more vulnerable to being destroyed by pirates.

Thats why I smartened up, and dedicated the first 3 rows of my 48 slot ship for defensive and offensive technologies, and I dedicated only 2 rows for in my maxed exo suit for technologies that pretty much keep me alive a lot longer on extreme planets and whenever I have to farm sentinals.

I also optimized my technologies to get another state boost. To increase my defenses and offenses.

When it comes to carrying goods, my suit is strictly used to carrying items that DO NOT stack, like atlas stones, Gravitino balls, venom sacs, etc. While my ship carries all the stackables, seeing that 1 inventory slot can hold up to 500 stackable items, whereas the exo can only hold 250.

I learned quickly, through trial and error on what to do, how things work, and not hoarding uslesd items.

Mind you, half my playing time was with the pre-order ship that came with only 16 slots, and half of those were occupied with technologies.

I can carry a great amount of goods and take down pirates, so far I destoryed 10 of them in 1 go.

Its a thinking game as well.

Overload2811d ago

"better inventory, better item management, more friendly interface"

This is actually insane. All of this is top notch as it is Destiny's UI, which might be the best of all time.

-Foxtrot2811d ago (Edited 2811d ago )

It's not that good man. My biggest problem is your ship parts are within your inventory space and waste slots

This is what it should be like...

https://s4.postimg.io/ij4bc...

Palitera2811d ago

Yeah, because it is awesome having to wait half a second to perform any action on your UI...

Liqu1d2811d ago

@Foxtrot The whole point of having your ships upgrades in your inventory is to make you choose between more ship upgrades or more inventory space. Someone who likes trading might want more inventory space so they sacrifice ship upgrades which will make them more vulnerable.

-Foxtrot2811d ago

@Liqu1d

That's a silly excuse

Thrusters on a ship is not something you put in your inventory...they are PART of the ship, they shouldn't need to take up an inventory space.

So if the ship was a Car would it mean 4 wheels would be given to a 4 inventory slots, including the engine and side mirrors...what about the little screen wipers? Of course they wouldn't be included because it's part of the car, unlike items you take in and out of your inventory.

Nothing wrong with paid DLC as long as it is worth it. If Hello Games offers some expansions then I'll definitely consider buying them. More times than not, DLC isn't worth the money, imo. Witcher 3 being one of the rare examples. Hello Games should follow their model.

YinYangGaming2811d ago

If they add a story mode then I could see that as paid DLC but this is his exact quote to Redbull a few days ago "there will be no paid DLC, just patches."

Overload2811d ago

The lore is the story, I doubt that will change. If anything they will just add more lore.

YinYangGaming2811d ago

Yeah I know there's all the paths etc. I'm just wondering what he means by the quote they'll make paid DLC if it was for a really big feature, might be MP but I'm not sure

Joey_The_Robot2811d ago

He's also said several different things about multiplayer, so I wouldn't take the Redbull interview quote as gospel.

Palitera2811d ago (Edited 2811d ago )

Yeah, he poses as an small indie dev who makes everything for love of their game, but act like a normal corporate AAA producer: bugs, lies, crashes everywhere.

At least one of these bugs let me fully upgrade my ship easily (when the undertested game is not crashing).

Aenea2811d ago

That's the thing these days, some sites write whole articles about one little sentence, to me he's just covering his ass just in case in a year or later they decide to do a big paid DLC. They want to keep adding to it for free as he has already said, but if he now says all updates will be free people will go again "Sean lied to us!" when they decide to do paid DLC...

It's not a big deal and this whole article is so not necessary...

NotEvenMyFinalForm2811d ago

this game's waaaaaay overpriced already, paid DLC would be a travesty.

one2thr2811d ago

Like how Destiny was first released with the hype of having a compelling story, that later was found out to be not included with the $60 base game, but with paid DLC and having to go on bungies website to read about the other half of the story via grimior cards that you unlocked in game.

And yet people were completely fine with that because it had smooth controls and was made by a much larger already known team of people.

This generation, I tell you...

Let them deliver the features they intended first then talk paid dlc

The only PlayStation dev I care about tbh.

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

banger881d 5h ago

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

jjb198115h ago

Outriders was crap. They slapped that game together and threw in a loot system to get players' attention. This game was absolutely jank and the always online nonsense made it stutter like crazy. People Can't Optimize.

thorstein14h ago

I liked Outriders but I could see where the artistic vision was compromised. The way the industry is now, it wouldn't surprise me that upper management would scrap something that didn't pull in money via gaas, mts, or other means.

Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition Reneges on Promised Content Behind $250 Price Tag

The new Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition has the community in an outrage after promising exclusive access to the new PvE mode for $250 USD.

Christopher1d 4h ago

$250? Do they not know all the other games that already exist or will be made in the future that can do similar?

SimpleDad20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

This is for the hardcore people that have 2500 h in the game. They basically play that one game the whole year.
Oh and those same people are mad as hell at this... what a way to reward fans of your game and annihilate newcomers.

got_dam4h ago

Read a comment earlier calling it a "special monetization operation." I had to chuckle at that.
