Here's When Xbox One Background Music Is Coming at the Earliest

Phil Spencer
“@TheEjderha83 Won't be before summer sorry to say.”

creeping judas3043d ago

Spotify on PS4 is an awesome app, it's great to listen to your music when playing racing games that don't require you to listen to story narrative.

thekhurg3043d ago

So many fanboys already disagreeing with the ability to listen to music in the background. LOL

Dinkis3043d ago

Maybe cause he said ps4 in an Xbox article?

S2Killinit3043d ago

Im just surprised that they dont have this on xbox yet. I mean we are years into the generation now.

AngelicIceDiamond3043d ago

MS is known to take there time with things. They never rush anything when it comes to apps or features for the console. Similar to Twitch being so late on X1 and turned out to be one of the greatest devices to stream from on console.

Before summer isn't so bad, don't gotta wait super long or anything.

creeping judas3043d ago

@all above, I see that I may have pressed the enter button too early, it was meant to say that this will be a cool addition to X1.

Sunny_D3043d ago

@angelicdemon

I mean... They had background music from the beginning on Xbox 360 though? Although, I guess a lot of features that were already on both consoles last gen have been taken out this gen. Partly, due to anti piracy measures or licensing issues.

ULTp0ltergeist3043d ago

@S2killinit

They can, it was an Xbox innovation. If anything this time it's about money obviously.

Rookie_Monster3043d ago

There are two ways already to get background music on XB1. Either by snapping the music app with the game (real estate screen size takes a hit though)

or you can stream it to your PC/laptop and have all your music collection played on the background. Been enjoying Forza that way for some time now on my Laptop so that is a work around until the official update to Background music hits.

Ripsta7th3043d ago

I liked it better when I was ableto stream w spotify
But then that major update took it off :/

While it should have been there from day One, I'm glad to see that they have announced a time frame for when it's coming. I'm hopeful that with the time they're taking on this, that it'll be done right though. It needs all the options available for music to be run in the background, like internet radio, cable radio/tv through HDMI, streaming from PC, and MP3 playback via media player or ripped to the internal HDD.

Listening to background music was one of my favorite features on OG Xbox & Xbox 360.

* Game has a terrible OST? Not a problem just listen to your own music.

* Sports game Franchise mode gets old listening to the same 13-14 songs over and over again....Solution? = Listen to your own music.

It's such an awesome feature that I can't wait to have back.

NeckBeardBSMTDweller3042d ago

For a fee... forget that. Ill take free DLNA streaming from my collection.

XanderZane3042d ago

Don't you have to pay a monthly fee to use Spotify though? Who wants to do that? I'd rather slip my music CD into the system and download some songs into my games to listen to. That's what you could do with the first 2 XBox.

one2thr3042d ago

If you want it to be commercial free, I think.

I Just listened to the entire Asher Roth Asleep in the Bread Aisle album, with only one 20 second commercial playing between tracks 3 and 4, also I haven't paid a penny for the service, nor am I only any trials.

How the hell is it this hard to incorporate Background Music ? I mean we can already play it from a USB just allow us to do it in the background.

Well for armchair developers things always seem easier.

I don't know the reason, but an example is that maybe the OS doesn't have the capability to run 3rd party apps in the background, because they have snap. To implement this, then requires modification deep in the OS and might require lot of testing. This is especially true for the newly introduced Windows 10 kernel on Xbox One.

A lot of the technical challenges or constraints are due to system design. That is why MS during Xbox 360 was able to do more with fixed 32MB Ram for their OS the entire generation, as opposed to PS3's 48 MB RAM (that started at over a 100 MB RAM).

Point being, introduction of Windows 10 and possibly some bad design decision might have screwed this up, or perhaps they got engineers working on something else....

just_looken3042d ago (Edited 3042d ago )

Maybe you guys can wake up and realize the xbox platforms are running on a windows os and all they need to do is make the games compatible with the new background app.

Or just install vlc player LOL

OpenGL3043d ago

I don't understand how I can watch netflix (with some lag) while playing a game but I can't listen to music.

OC_MurphysLaw3043d ago

Umm..you can. You can snap music while playing a game anytime. This is talking about opening the app and playing music while playing the game but keeping the music going if you un-snapped it basically. Currently if you unsnap something it quits the app. I imagine there are hurdles to be made because of they way they designed apps to run on Xbox 1.

OpenGL3043d ago

I understand how it works on Xbox One, I own one.

I'm just pointing out that it's kind of silly that Microsoft went through the trouble of making sure you could use any media-app in game via snap but didn't think to include background music support. Both the original Xbox and Xbox 360 had background music support.

Gwynbleidd3043d ago

Good point, I think it has something to do with that. It is nothing they can implement in a quick sprint (as we have seen so far lol). It seems like something they have to build around the way apps are executed without crippling the system performance.

OC_MurphysLaw3043d ago

@OpenGL We all know there were some very short sighted design choices for the Xbox One in its original design. Likely someone thought snapping music would be the solution but as we all know, its not desired given the screen space it eats up.

user99502793043d ago

So they can make backward compatability work post-launch, but they cant make music play in the fkn background?

I'm not convinced, Spence. You ppl cant be working too hard on it. Probably watching those Xbox Music sub numbers tick upwards.

343_Guilty_Spark3043d ago

It's called Groove and it's actually fairly decent.

user99502793043d ago

I was subscribed when it was Xbox Music.... its ok. But I really dont care. Background music would be cool whether through Groove or another application.

3043d ago
Dinkis3043d ago

What do you mean you ppl? Lol

user99502793043d ago

Rest assured there were racist implications!

Major_Glitch3043d ago

You can't listen to background music on the Xbox One?! That really does blow my mind, especially when you consider that the 360 had that feature from the beginning.

343_Guilty_Spark3043d ago

Both consoles were missing features at launch.

Major_Glitch3041d ago

@343 How does that even remotely address the issue I've raised?!

Xbox President Sarah Bond's Bloomberg Interview Is Corporate Fakery At Its Best

Saad from eXputer: "After Arkane Austin & Tango were shutdown, Xbox President Sarah Bond spoke with Bloomberg in what I believe to be utter corporate fakery."

gold_drake12h ago

im not really surprised by that, shes always been more a "let me talk about something else than what u want to know" kinda gal

Cacabunga5h ago

If what they are doing is that good, what’s the point of hiding the true story?

anast9h ago

She's a caricature of the shareholders.

PRIMORDUS7h ago

"Shareholders" I call them cancer, they are already rich to begin with but need more and more. It's like a disease, with no cure.

Leeroyw5h ago

I own shares in game companies. I'm not anything near a major share holder. I just want them to make good games and be successful because of that. I think it's the senior management that's the problem. They are the ones that should be making it clear to the shareholders what creates growth and ensures a future of their business. Not this weasle words garbage that she did on the interview. It was horrific. I don't know a shareholder that would be happy with any of them for this.

Profchaos4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Same and I'm not rich by any stretch like most people's I'm just trying to keep my head above water these days most company's shareholders are made up of everyday people it's amazing how companies think we want something but the reality is we don't.

Disney are probably the worse at the moment it's shareholders voted on ending a lot of the crap and outing the current execs the execs turned around and said no we disagree with the shareholder vote

CrimsonWing699h ago

Yea, it was and it’s insulting that they think we’re dumb enough to fall for this. Look, the truth was you took a gamble on these studios and while they released some games to critical praise and great reception they just aren’t bringing in a ROI. Be transparent, you’re not a politician.

Just tell everyone you spend money on projects big and small and when money isn’t being made you go over the potential of revenue a studio can bring in vs those that can’t and make the hard decision to chop them.

She says this whole thing about “success” doesn’t fit one meaning for each studio. Well yea, a small budget production isn’t going to expect to sell the same as a large budget production.

One thing I wish they did though was let Tango be an independent studio.

TheGamingHounds9h ago

disheartening to see no regard for the human cost of business anymore
the bad decisions and judgements of these CEOs severely impact the frontliners
these fake responses are just salt on wounds

RoadRacer8h ago

imagine havin the audacity to say "we need more games like hifi rush" right after closing the studio that made it lol
followin up with this show of "deflecting every question" was in poor taste

Alot’s changed in 25 years. We have games with $300 mill budgets, people not interested in games other than Fortnite and Minecraft, the older generation of gamers giving up the hobby or dying off, a period of super bad inflation where the industry decided to hike up prices on games, Gamepass harming game sales, GaaS games being pushed left and right with obnoxious monetization and worse looking/playing (Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight).

The industry is just shite right now. Games ain’t selling, games cost massive amounts, businesses can’t bleed money and this is what happens. Part of it is on them and part of it is on consumers not buying.
