Before Mario Maker And Minecraft There Was LittleBigPlanet

Mark Serred writes : September 2015. One week before its release, a representative from Nintendo visits our office to show off Super Mario Maker, one of the bravest video games Nintendo released in recent memory.

He leads with three words.

“In Mario Maker you do three things: create, share and play.”

A sudden jolt in the memory.

What is it about those words? Where have I heard them before…

Little Big planet is one of the best series from last gen and quite innovative!

Thatguy-3103120d ago

But Sony titles don't innovate /s
Media Molecule knocked it out of the park with LBP so all eyes are on Dreams to see if they can capture the same magic LBP made last Gen.

jholden32493120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

They absolutely do innovate.

The problem isn't that, it's that Little Big Planet sucks. It's one of THE most boring and dull platformers I've ever played, and platformers are my favorite genre.

I'll give em props for trying, but the gameplay is just dull. The mechanics are floaty and imprecise, there's no real flow or challenge. I can't stand the series- which is why I never bought LBP3. I learned my lesson and it wasn't just a one game fluke. When the gameplay sucks it doesn't matter how creative it is.

Sorry if that offends anyone, but it's true. The only people who think it doesn't suck are those who haven't played a real platformer, like DKC Tropical Freeze, Rayman Legends, or any given Mario title. The contrast is stark.

Now Tearway has the same problem. Creative as they come, but lacking in solid gameplay. Although Tearaway wasn't nearly as bad. I actually kind of liked it. But it still couldn't even come close to touching the ones I mentioned earlier.

But that's ok. Sony has strengths and weaknesses. And platformers are one of their biggest weaknesses. They should just drop LBP and make games in genres they're good at. Like Infamous and Uncharted.

And if they wanna make a new platformer, I could totally get behind that. Like I said I LOVE platformers. Just so long as it's not Media Molecule making it. They could stick with Tearaway though. That's a decent game. Not great, but it's definitely better than that bore-fest Little Big Planet.

Aloy-Boyfriend3120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

None of you say is true. LBP is way different platformer than the ones you mentioned other than jumping obstacles and sidescrolling. It's just your opinion

Carry on champ

XabiDaChosenOne3120d ago

@jholden3249
I hate when people try to label their opinion as the "truth".

PreAtaric3120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

@joholden - Damn, that's one long opinion. Don't fool yourself into thinking it's anything more than that.

Very cool series, imo. The included levels are fun on their own, but when the creative part of the community gets going, it's becomes virtually endless.

freshslicepizza3120d ago

little big planet had lots of charm and excellent tools to create but where it failed was its floaty mechanics. thr playing mario maker levels with those type of response times.

Zhipp3120d ago

@PreAtaric
Its an opinion, but a well stated one. A fee of his statements are facts, too. Like LPB's floaty mechanics, unresponsive controls, and general lack of challenge.

I even partly agrre with him. I think LBP has a fantastic level editor, and its loads of fun to see what players create, but the gameplay itself is really boring, and, if it mattered at all, it would be quite frustrating too.

miyamoto3120d ago

LBP and Uncharted 2 were my first two PS3 games back in Dec 2009.
They made me believe in video games again.

Spotie3120d ago

You can always count on jholden to throw shade Sony's way.

Lbp is a great platformer, and millions have enjoyed the franchise. Never ran into unresponsive controls, but the floaty ones weren't a problem unless you MADE them one. Not gonna bother addressing most of that silliness.

I do think it's funny, however, that you claim Sony sucks at platformers when some of their most iconic franchises hail from that genre. Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro... add LBP to the list. But you think it's a genre they're no good at?

Maybe it's a genre you don't know enough about.

And; Before LBP, there was Forge Mode in Halo.

Innovative 1st!

Allsystemgamer3120d ago

Before forge was time splitters....forge isn't a platformer dude. It's an object placer.

Zhipp3120d ago

Minecraft isn't a platformwrr either. If anything its a survival sim.

Littlebigplanet 2, One of the best games ever created.

FallenAngel19843120d ago

LittleBigPlanet is one of the greatest platformers ever. I especially love how you can even make completely different genres, dynamic cutscenes, or even entire games within a game through the extensive level editor.

FranzKafka3120d ago

I'm probably going to receive a good deal of Disagrees, but I daresay the original LBP was 2008's GOTY, beating GTA IV, MGS4, and Fallout 3.

DragonDDark3120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

I agree.. it basically created a genre.

@Jalva
Well, people can disagree.. it's just an opinion. :)

The only PlayStation dev I care about tbh.

Inverno2d ago

Dayum did I hit a nerve. Sorry for not liking most of this gens games coming from PS, not really doe.

Cacabunga3d ago

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

TheColbertinator3d ago

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

Stopac3d ago

I too like to look for things in the wrong places.

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

IGN writes: "Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams."

Inverno37d ago

How self sustained can DREAM be when it's basically stuck on PS4? I don't think it's even gotten a PS5 upgrade. Ending support for what is essentially a game making engine is basically death. SONY did DREAMS dirty.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville42d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi41d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein41d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos41d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein41d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

Number1TailzFan41d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long41d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

banger8842d ago

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

"Feminist Whore" lmao

gold_drake42d ago

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts42d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername42d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai41d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.
