As an American with Friends in the Military, the Never-Ending War of ‘PlanetSide 2’ Feels Familiar

VICE: It may seem a stretch to compare The War on Terror to an MMO, but they both traffic in the same phenomena, existing in an eternal, ambiguous middle.

I love PlanetSide I've been chasing that MAG high for a while this is the closest by far and some
Think.
Reading this makes me think isn't CoD or any shooter that has multiplayer endless warfare rotating same maps fighting over the same land? it's just it off context in most games but the concept is the same except your fighting for a faction not just yourself and your character.

I think I'ma get to Auraxis now.
Don't need much a "reason"to do this, it's just fun

Well, I didn't make it far into this article...

"Most of the time, when I die in PlanetSide 2, I'm not sure who killed me. The battlefields are large and often chaotic, and the game makes no effort to point out where your killer was when they took that fateful shot."

The game tells you who killed you, what weapon was used, and shows you a small map with an indicator telling you which direction the shot came from.

"long moments of boredom as you roam and warp around continents, looking for a fight."

Or you could just look at the map, easily find a fight, and either go straight there or to the next closest base.

I won't quote the whole part about motivation, but I did find it funny that CoD and Battlefield don't need backstory to explain why you're killing the enemy but this game does for some reason, simply because the map and player count are bigger. Lots of people jump straight into multiplayer with those games and some never play through the story. We're not actors who need our motivation explained to us before filming a scene. We're gamers in an "us versus them" scenario.

"It may seem a stretch to compare The War on Terror to an MMO…"

It really does.

Ah. Vice.com. That explains it. Kinda like their fearless brand of journalism sometimes, but not much of a fan of their gaming coverage. It's so... superficial.

brighthand3199d ago

It's Vice. They've decided to enter the gamingsphere with the same intentions as Polygon and Kotaku. From what I've heard, they've even hired Leigh Alexander and touted her as being a part of their "Dream Team."

So get ready for the agendas, hyperbole, straw-men, and a brand of writing demonstrative of a disconnect between those who love and play games and those who just write about them because they can't write about other things, which is characteristic of the "progressive" gaming media. I'm not even going to give them the clicks.

Sorry but comparing those who go out there and put their life on the line is not even comparable to playing a video game. I think I see what the author's trying to say but I think this definitely trivializes soldiers in actual wars

iceman063198d ago

Soldiers aren't though, which was his point I believe.

yeah war never ends in planetside 2, i love those night time wars where the two teams are fighting across a big land mass, and all you see is flashing missles and lights from the bullets, the neon colors and the explosions and sparks, its intense, even though i suck at it, i still feel like part of it when im shooting my rocket at god knows what lol :3

They sold the entire company. I did like when they ran Everquest as well. But numbers were declining unfortunately

Watch it turn out to be Amazon in disguise

Was such a cool concept back in the day - shame that it never really took off like it probably could have with more support
