The E3FX Witcher 3 Mod Will Make Your Game Look Spectacular

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is simply the best game we have seen this year and best game for ages to come. We are going to discuss a new mod today, the mod is called E3FX and as the name suggests, it helps you get E3 like VFX in the game.

Whoever created this should be embarrassed.

MicDude3292d ago

Why? I decided to give it a try. Looks fine to me.

Eyesoftheraven3292d ago (Edited 3292d ago )

Because it's color grading an already color graded image. To advertise it as Bringing back the E3 and VGX Visuals is silly and seems to try and take advantage of anyone shy of a prosumer level of understanding of color science and what grading compressed assets and video does to quality. What this "mod" clearly does is adjust color values and various filters and ignores all NTSF/ISF standards the devs master the image to. Crushing the blacks beyond an artistically excusable level, clipping highlights, and oversharpening the image.

If you want better blacks, higher contrast, proper sharpness and therefore increased perceptible detail, you need a better monitor and to calibrate it.

Either way, the biggest issue is how this is presented -- just call it what it is. All the hyperbolic woo is embarrassing.

nveenio3291d ago (Edited 3291d ago )

It seems like The Witcher 3: Mildly Desaturated Edition mixed with the Instagram Edition to me.

AndrewLB3292d ago

I agree. SweetFX is not a mod IMO. Mods involve physically changing the rendered environment and not putting a post-process "pane of glass" between the rendered environment and the player. Changing textures, particle effects, actual environmental lighting, improving static meshes, and making changes to gameplay are what takes real talent.

Had this been a true lighting mod like some of the ones made for Skyrim (where ENB is an option, not required) like "Realistic Lighting Overhaul", i may have considered it. Till then, they're not mods.

wannabe gamer3291d ago (Edited 3291d ago )

lol so now we are debating what qualifies as a mod. as if modifying the game in anyway isnt enough. it doesnt matter how its achieved, it is still modifying the way the game looks to the user compared to original look. so it is a mod. just cause it wasnt achieved the way you want means nothing. you can play with words all you want lol,

it looks like crap yes and seems unnecessary but thats besides the point

Utalkin2me3291d ago

A game modification is something that can not be done by no other means. You can change your colors due to monitor settings or in your video card properties. Sweet FX only changes color settings, which is not a mod.

starchild3292d ago

It's just a SweetFX/Reshading type mod that gives it that desaturated look the first two trailers had. It's a matter of taste.

DrRobotnik3292d ago

The ability to breathe extra life into an already great experience is always welcomed.

kingjosh18763292d ago

It looks as though it makes everything grey, removing all the colours and taking away life from the environment?

MicDude3292d ago

I don't think that makes it look worse IMO. The colors in vanilla make the game look really warm and welcoming while these color changes make the game look cold and harsh. Which fits the Witcher games better, again IMO.

Eamon3292d ago

To be honest, all it does is color grade the image to look more like films.

It doesn't bring back those insane fog effects we saw in the pre-downgraded version.

Meltic3291d ago (Edited 3291d ago )

Be glad that they took back the blood into the water like in e3. They will do it with the fog effects allso with a patch. How can people just Think of graphic these Days. This game looks awesome and play awesome

aquaticDonut3292d ago

If it actually was a real graphics mod, I'd be down, but it's just another SweetFX-esque color filter.

sephiroth4203292d ago

I like V4 better in the comparison video. both look much better then the standard one.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave56d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan56d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name79d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno79d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno79d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure79d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
