I don't think anyone disagrees about what's being said about DX12 helping XboxOne. But, that being said, GamingBolt turned "I hope" to "he believes" to "it will".

Although I would guess he does believe and perhaps even experienced improvements, that's not the quote they give us. All we learn for certain from this article is what a developer hopes for and they spin it to make it sound like confirmation. Nothing to do with Sony or Microsoft, that's just bad journalism.

I'm sure we all have some things we would like to "confirm", so I thought his comment was kind of funny.

I have only seen an Naughty dog dev downplay dx12 and a dev comment on dx12 that Microsoft would need something more than dx12 to get witcher 3 to 1080p on xb1 (anyway we found out he worked for Sony for 4 years so we don't know what agenda he has he could be pushing support for PS4 at CDPROJECT

Take a car for example; normally it's 200 hp as is give it a tuneup, change spark plugs, use top of the line oil and filters! You might get an extra 15 hp out of it. Rating wise that's doable, but it's well within the limits of what the sum of the car is able to do.

Now...... Take that same 200 hp car and drop a bigger engine in it and you have basically changed the hp rating of the car as well as the car itself.

DX12 is performing the same action for PC's as well as the Xbox1! The difference being you can change out the hardware in a PC, plus most PC's are poorly optimized from the start so in essence DX12 finds and initializes the most efficient route for coding. Freeing up and speeding up the time it takes the hardware to complete an action.

On the Xbox1, the hardware is fixed and stationary with the ability to code close to the metal from the start. That in itself is the restricting factor to how far the hardware can expand software wise. Simply put all Xbox1's are created equal not PC's. So in essence, all that can be done for the Xbox1 is a top of the line tuneup. But that's a far cry from having a bigger engine put in.

People act like the DX12 injection is going to make the Xbox1 have off-spring of little GPU's and CPU's running around! The fact is if it's not there now, it's most likely not going to be there later.

He didn't mean that they should over clock the x1.He's just saying that the hardware doesn't change, yet overclocking improves hardware. All I can say is every update had helped the x1 since release in some way shape or form, so why wouldn't this help in some way. If updates like this doesn't have any affect on x1,then sucks for ps4. No one's gonna improve. This Gen was a half step from last. There always seems to be more "ps" people on articles like this concerning the x1 then xbox people. Why is that? For the love of pie, people, curb your expectations. Dedicated hardware cannot become more powerful (unless, theoretically, augmented by cloud computation). DirectX12 and whatever Sony is working on will help *optimize* the hardware. Can games look better and provide more stable frame rates? Absolutely. How? Well for one, you can reduce the OS footprint to free up resources, but guess what? You're not adding any RAM, CPU/GPU power, or what have you. That 8 GB of RAM is only being used more efficiently and that CPU and GPU aren't changing frequencies.

In theory, I suppose one could overclock the components in the consoles. XBOX One already has an overclocked CPU, but since PS4 uses the same CPU, that would only make PS4's CPU as good. GPUs are another story.

Even then, that can cause a lot of console failures if the cooling systems are inadequate. My guess is they won't be doing any overclocking...which means we'll likely just be seeing optimizations.

I don't care which company you are, you're not going to magically awaken your console's true power with DX12 or Sony's optimizations.

I agree with you 100%. The XB1 will run hardware accelerated DX12 so it won't be magic when it gets the modest gains Phil keeps talking about. As Phil has stated in the past that DX12 will make it easier to do some of the things XB1 is good at, we can assume he means things like the eSRAM dedicated tiled resources which runs around 6gb of textures through 32mb of ram. MS demonstrated this tech a few years back so we know it works. That alone frees up lots of GPU resources for other tasks.

What else is going to be hardware accelerated? I don't know for sure but it makes sense to assume that MS built the XB1 as differently as they did to facilitate DX12 coding on the machine.

Since none of us can get an accurate read of Phil's statements all any of us can do, on either side, is make assumptions. One fact we can all agree on though is the benefit to XB1 won't be as massive as PC.

We can argue that, relative to PC today, all of the current hardware is underpowered. When PS3 and XBOX 360 came out, they weren't very far behind at all. Now, the difference between consoles and PC are actually fairly staggering. Not that I care; I've never been too crazy about graphics. I'm from the 8-bit era where you gamed for fun lol.

Other than that, I agree. Spencer, the good guy, the XBOX savior, and one of the most humble and straightforward shooters in the industry, said it's not getting anymore powerful.

The wording of that is tricky. No one's denying it will bring some changes (in the form of optimizations, mind you), but that doesn't mean it's going to get more powerful. You can't make it more powerful. You can make it more efficient, but that's the limit as far as integrated hardware is concerned.

If the developers are struggling to make the machine efficient which is resulting in lower res games, the update won't make the system more powerful, but it will increase resolution if they are able to get the most out of it they can. We've seen a couple times now where Microsoft has stepped in to help a developer out so they could achieve higher resolutions/fps. DX12 will enable more devs to get this done without help.

I do agree we will still see limitations since they aren't adding hardware, but 1080p should become much more common and less of a news story.

I'll have to agree with your second comment. The key word is potential! From my perspective the Xbox1 has a whole lot of it, which should be apparent immediately.

What DX12 does or will do is realize the fullness of that potential. And yes I do believe for those that take the time to learn the nuances of the Xbox1 the results will show immediately.

People need to get it right, THE CONSOLE WILL NEVER BE MORE POWERFUL!!! The hardware is what it is. Both MS and Sony will constantly pursue better API's to access the existing, static hardware. The console will always have the same power. You cant take the videocard and suddenly make it faster, more pipes or whatever. What you can do is optimize the code to access it and both MS and Sony will have varying degrees of success doing so over the lifespan of this generation. Anyone who thinks the X1 (which is my personal favorite, other than PC) is suddenly going to act like the hardware has been upgraded is seriously misguided.

DX12 will make the Xbox One a lot more efficient, it will make games run and look a lot better. At the moment nowhere near the full potential is unlocked, its not going to change the power of the hardware, just going to change how it works. People that have PC's don't need to change their hardware to get the benefits, I think it'll be more or less the same for Xbox as it was built with DX12 in mind.

I'm sure we'll know exactly what DX12 will do for the XB1 by the time GamesCom is over. I'm glad World of Tanks is coming to XB1. I have it on my XBox 360, but I never played it. I'll put it on my XB1 and delete it off my XBox 360 now.
