CRYENGINE Beaten At Its Own Game - New Unreal Engine 4 Map Shows Amazing Forest Environment

DSOGaming writes: "It seems that Unreal Engine 4 will be the engine that most developers will be using to power their games. Or at least it will be more popular than Crytek’s CRYENGINE, as Epic’s engine is now capable of rendering forest – and jungle – maps that look as good (if not better) as the ones of CRYENGINE. YouTube’s member ‘Hristo Rusanov’ has shared a video from his Forest map, showing a map with dense grass and wind physics applied to the vegetation."

I hated Unreal Engine 3, but Unreal Engine 4 seems to be great.

AnotherProGamer3981d ago (Edited 3981d ago )

yeah a lot of unreal 3 games were brown and the textures were bulky

ScottyHoss3981d ago

I always thought I was the only one who thought that, and that mouth movement -_-

hoju693981d ago (Edited 3981d ago )

Its always funny to me to see how people who obviously have no idea how a game engine works are so quick to criticize them.

starchild3981d ago

Mirror's Edge is colorful and the textures are not "bulky" as far as I can tell.

Seriously, though, the colors used in a game and even the texture quality don't really have anything to do with the game engine being used.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is one of the best looking games I have seen and it was made with Unreal Engine 3. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

EZMickey3981d ago

like Bioshock, Enslaved and Lost Odyssey :P

Just trollin'. I totally get what you're saying, the way the engine rendered textures and handled lighting became a signature trait in a way that most gamers didn't enjoy.

At least we can leave the era of most multiplatform games suffering from that texture pop-in trait well behind us.

This looks good compared to OG crysis Buuut... its 7 years later. and the plant movement in the original crysis was based on physics calculations for wind concussion waves from grenades and projectiles as well as player interaction.

Also this map seems to be only about 50 yards of foliage in a skybox, OG crisis was putting out miles of draw distance in realtime. Id love to see how this runs with about 100X more of the map present.

This is just pre calculated flexing evenly on all the plants.

In my opinion not much here is better than the OG at its own game. But very close. UE4 Does MANY OTHER things much better for example particles, Z-depth particle physics calculations on the GPU Displacement, and not to mention the whole new workflow for the editor.

UE4 is superior in every way Except at making crysis' jungles. I have yet to see anything better.

Looks great. I can't wait to see more of what this engine can do in future games.

Locknuts3981d ago

Looks like the original Crysis, only with more things moving.

andydalum3981d ago

This should be interesting for games like the next installment to the Elder scrolls series, mass effect series the kind of games that i came to love last gen could have so many new possibilities with a engine like this :D.

Omnisonne3981d ago

Expect the engine to be used by many (smaller) devs coming years, very versatile and easy to work with

Wow! That is badass. WB needs to make this happen now.

Right? Thanks for checking it out!

Fans??? This is done by one person

WoodsRatesGames1517d ago

Someone else was commissioned to do the music and another person modelled the batmobile. Links to all involved are included in the article.

Gaming4Life19811517d ago

They should have been made a batman game for the best batman movie. This looks amazing and now I must watch the movie.

Am I crazy or is there an Unreal Engine 5 now? Why promote old tech?

waverider1537d ago

I really dont understand either? isnt the Unreal Engine 5 already available for studios? arent they already working with it?

masterfox1537d ago

UE5 Is for PS5 only, deal with it! :D

***runs away from this thread with pride!**

Tacoboto1537d ago

UE5 is not released yet and developers for years will still make UE4 games because that's where their tools and customizations are.

Mortal Kombat still uses UE3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also still UE3.

Magog1537d ago

That more of an embarrassing indictment of those devs than a reason to promote old software.

Tacoboto1537d ago

Embarrassing indictment? You know nothing of software development then.

Spenok1537d ago (Edited 1537d ago )

Because a ridiculous amount of the industry still uses 4, and because no, 5 is not out yet. They said it would launch later this year.

AuraAbjure1537d ago

Companies still use Unreal Engine 3.

Really impressive tech but I don’t even notice all of these benefits in real life, never mind being chased by zombies in a video game. Rather devote resources to resolution and frame rate.

Magog1537d ago

If you suddenly stopped casting reflections in a mirror I think you would notice.

Edit: i misread this.

Yes after seeing the Unreal 5 ps5 reveal, I thought that's where we were heading. But saying that I have read various articles that suggest its easy for developers to still work on Unreal 4 and carry everything over to Unreal 5 when needed, we shall see.
