Bloomberg: Gamestop says 2.3 mil customers waiting for PS4

GameStop Corp., the largest specialty retailer of video games, said its initial allocation of Sony Corp. PlayStation 4 consoles sold out and that 2.3 million customers are waiting for the devices.

Initial sales of the player exceeded its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, by more than 80 percent in the first few days, executives of the Grapevine, Texas-based chain said today on a conference call with analysts.

GameStop Corp. also anticipate a large waiting list for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox One, suggesting a prolonged industry sales slump is ending.

Read the article..the waiting list is based on post launch demand..he says they are also anticipting a karge waiting list for the xbx one too..both consoles will keep selling out for a while.

Right, the key word is "ANTICIPATING" for Xbox one, and not that its already a sure thing. However they do know for fact that over 2 million are awaiting a PS4. We should wait for sales data on xbone before you get your hopes up that it will be as sought after as PS4. So far preliminary data has shown much more anticipation for PS4 than for xbox one... by 2 to 5 times in most cases.

The waiting list for one retailer alone is almost half of Sony's projected sales target for the end of their fiscal year in 2014. That's astronomical.

If they can produce units at three times the speed they currently do, they would probably meet their target before the end of this month. Keep in mind that we're still only talking about North America... that is absolutely insane.

Sad to say I'm one of those waiting. I wasn't sure I was going to hop into the next gen so quickly this time around so I never bothered pre-ordering. Then I sold one of my extra PS3's, my dusty 360 and now I'm sitting on a waiting list with a couple hundred in credit, waiting for a PS4 to become available. Sucks. I'm rather anxious to try AC4 in 1080p and to give Resogun a try.

I'm sure there are more than a few out there who picked up some extra hardware hoping to make a few bucks. Nothing wrong with that. I appreciate the offer, but I'm up in Canada and the shipping would kill. Plus, I've already got a couple of hundred in credit at my local PlayNTrade that I want to use up. Otherwise I could have picked up one already at another store. I notice on Twitter, people are tweeting around the city when they know a retailer has stock in.

Also, if you have a PS4, pick up SuperMotherLode and help support a great bunch of guys! They're in my city and they've been working on this title for some time. I understand it'll also be coming to the PS3 soon. Good group of indie devs. Makes me happy to see them getting some exposure.

I was one of the many who didnt preorder, I was able to get mine being as I was the first in line, however the guys at my gamestop said they had 40 extra and had to go across the street to Bestbuy and Target to see if anyone want a console.

I would have never guessed you wouldn't jump in early. Surprising! My buddy waited and couldn't find one at midnight release... somehow Amazon had some stock and it was ordered Thursday night, delivered Saturday! From what I hear, they(retailers) are holding the next batch for next Friday. Black Friday is going to be a blood bath.

I got burned so bad on my launch 360 console and that was a hardware nightmare that lasted years, I was a bit gun-shy about jumping in right out of the gate this time. Plus I have so many PS3 titles I still haven't had time to play, and right before Christmas I found it hard to justify spending this on myself. With the PS3 I could at least sell the purchase to my wife as "But it plays blu-ray and is a decent media player" and have that be something new.

But then I had a credit on my account at the store, and I sold my 360, then sold my extra PS3 to a family member, then there was that awesome trade in at future shop that let me turn 3 coasters sitting on my shelf into two copies of COD and one of AC4. Suddenly I found myself only $60 away from a PS4 purchase with upgrade codes for the PS4 versions of COD and AC4 for and extra $20...suddenly I wished I had preordered one.

Hopefully they'll get some more stock in the next couple of weeks at the PlayNTrade I have my credit at. I guess there's only 12 people ahead of me waiting so that doesn't sound so bad.

Really didn't look at it as hindsight. I would have thought this would be obvious from the jump. I don't understand all the people who walked into the store on launch day, only to be turned away disappointed. They obviously knew the day and date that the system was releasing, so why wouldn't they have just pre-ordered just in case? Worst case scenario, you change your mind and you lose nothing.

I bought all 3 consoles last gen just shortly after launch (actually bought the Wii day one with about a 20 minute wait) and didn`t have any problems finding stock of any of them. Pre-ordering just isn`t something that everyone does. I`ve almost never pre-ordered a game or device and in the past when I have it was only because I happened to be in the store anyway looking for something else and they asked me if I wanted to pre-order.

I`ve never been one to get caught up in the hype, or need my games or electronics day one so not anticipating buying one for months anyway it simply didn`t occur to me to preorder. Looking back, I wish I had anticipated my change of heart and preordered.
