PS4's Share Button Will Have Limitations, You Can't Upload Whatever You Want

"When Sony unveiled the next generation PlayStation 4 at their February 21st event, they also showcased the new DualShock 4 controller. It was a significant step up from the original DualShock, particularly in the new Share button taking the place of the Select button."

Well ofcourse...You not gonna share everything and anything!! That would just be wrong lol.

gameseveryday4006d ago

Important point to be noted here is that developers can set restrictions in different sections of the game. In this way they will not allow uploading of those particular sections.

PLASTICA-MAN4006d ago

"For example, on Vita, developers can in certain scenes disable the feature that lets users take a screensho" ?
That's news for me. I didn't know about it. Any example?

-Alpha4006d ago

^ Probably areas where the game reveals spoilers?

Nitrowolf24006d ago

@PLASTICA-MAN

Yep.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 on the PS Vita

MikeMyers4006d ago

It's going to be hard to think they can actually control this. People have put up the whole game of Heavy Rain on YouTube. We live in the information world full of spoilers.

There are those who get off ruining the experience for others and there are also those who do this stuff accidentally. I can see why they would want to put in restrictions but it still won't work.

creatchee4006d ago

I could see the share functionality disabled or limited in cases of music. Music seems to be a sticking point in relicensing everything from old TV shows to even relatively newer games because it isn't considered part of the work. In some extreme cases, particular songs are replaced, which definitely changes the original feel of something.

Also related, YouTube and other sharing sites mute audio or limit accessibility to videos that contain copyrighted music, so there's that to contend with even past the initial PS4 sharing limitations.

I understand why it's done, but it does kinda suck to have your videos muted or blocked. In my opinion, music will be the biggest factor that affects what is able to be shared.

abzdine4006d ago

Every social media has limitations in terms of online chart and confidentiality.
It is for example not allowed to share some types of videos on YouTube or some types of photos on FB end those boundaries are set by the owner of the service, the same should happen with Sony and share because it is subject to so many standard rules and agreements.

I dont see that as a limitation i see that as a customer and developer protection.

"The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance,” Yoshida stated to 4Gamer.net (via Edge)."

"B-but you won't need an HD PVR with PS4."

Told you people to keep dreaming when you were yapping about how the share button was going to make HD PVRs obsolete for most users.

3-4-54006d ago

The best use of this is for GTA5...if it ever gets to this platform...

All the crazy stuff you did others can now see.

I've done way cooler or crazier stuff with friends in that game than 95% of the GTA4 videos I've seen on youtube...

* Find a cool glitch or easter egg ? Instantly uploaded!

Dee_914006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

@MikeMyers Well yea you can work around it using something else other than the share botton. But I think the point of the article was about the share button, not using hardware to record gameplay. As far as they are concerned it will work with the share button. They cant control what you record using something other than the share button.

Looking at that screenshot I can definitely tell PD had some input on the design of the UI.
I cant wait to make my own videos. But I know with this ALOT of gamer channels are about to pop up on youtube when ps4 release lol

BitbyDeath4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

@Blacktric, not many people have a PVR. Infact i don't know anyone who has one.

The share button makes this feature open to everyone.

SilentNegotiator4006d ago

@Blacktric

You sure showed that one guy who said that one thing that one time that you're pretending was some significant sized group.

SLEDGE4005d ago

My guess would not be "Spoilers" but more stuff like nudity, and m+18 stuff.
Or things like the Airport scene in MW2 that was a "OPtional" mission.

@Plastica-man

http://i.imgur.com/Q1dPa.jp... There are ofcourse work arounds :)

But as long as I can put it the HDD and retrive it too my PC, i'd bee happy about it.

ThanatosDMC4005d ago

Mostly Capcom games doesnt let you take screenshots. Really annoying.

“There will be parts of a game that the maker does not want people to be able to see. The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance,” Yoshida stated to 4Gamer.net (via Edge).

Knight_Crawler4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Wait I am confused... didn't Sony announce that the PS4 would let you live stream your gameplay to your friends ,this way if you were stuck on a level your friends would be able to help you or take over and beat the level for you.

How is live stream gameplay different than the captured card feature that the share button will have - the content that the live stream will show is the same content that the capture card will show so why restrict one and not the other?

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

KwietStorm_BLM4006d ago

Yep that's a good point. Would kind of be silly if you can live stream but are restricted with what you can record and upload.

MysticStrummer4006d ago

I'd say live streaming to friends who have a PS4 is different than uploading to YouTube or some other site, but I don't know how they'll control one more than the other. There will be ways to work around whatever restrictions they put in.

MonkeyNinja4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

I'm glad they're doing this, because I was worried about spoilers being uploaded from a game.

But this way, users shouldn't be able to upload a video that gives away a major plot point or who the final boss is, etc.

Didn't Sony also say that you could upload videos to Ustream? I don't think they said anything about YouTube, but I could be wrong. I don't think you can upload directly to YouTube through the share button.

Garbanjo0014006d ago

There is a lot of negativity about the share button, and whether it will even be used. Personally, I like the concept. Sharing EVERYTHING is something I don't want to see on my buddies accounts. However, I do want to watch some people rage while killing a shit ton of ghouls on the next fallout.

MYSTERIO3604005d ago

I personally cant wait for the PS4, this news hasn't put a dampener on my anticipation in the slightest. As MS has pioneered the growth of online gaming and apps for consoles i have a feeling Sony will pioneer cross sharing and the user experience in general.

Arai4006d ago

It's to prevent spoilers in games so the experience isn't ruined for others.
Handy especially if you don't have the game yet, last thing you want is someone to ruin the ending for you.

claterz4006d ago

if you don't want it ruined for you then you don't search for the video. its not like it will just pop up in front of you unexpectedly. Imo this is a pretty big deal as a lot of people were expecting a fully functional built in recording feature to avoid the need of an expensive capture card.

DoomeDx4006d ago

The share button puts everything on your facebook wall. Dont friends love to post spoilers in the title :)

NBT914006d ago

On the WII U, you can upload screenshots etc and just mark any spoilers as spoilers, where they are hidden until one clicks on them.

The reasons that is not ideal is, you don't know how far in the game the post is. It could be the mid way point which you are at, or it could be the ending, no way to know until you click that post, by then it is too late. Plus people just forget to mark them as spoilers a lot of times.

As for your suggestion about only having the level name, even that is still not great. Imagine if MGS4 released on PS4 and people were reading the titles "Act 4 - Shadow Moses", thus it can still reveal a lot about the game.

I think that this way on PS4 is much better. There is no reason to be able to upload ending scenes. I think it is more for sharing goals on FIFA, decent killstreaks in an FPS, hole in one on Tiger Woods, you know the kind of thing? That's what I felt it was being advertised as, not really as a tool for complete playthroughs...

Arai4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

I read about this last night on NeoGAF, there's a whole discussion about it.
To those disagreeing you might actually want to read the original article and this discussion:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

It makes perfect sense, this "article" could use a better title.

@ claterz what about friends sending you a video, you don't know it's content before viewing it.

Nevertheless it's a rough translation, I'm sure we'll get concrete information within the next 7 months.

claterz4006d ago

I see what your saying but using the example you gave, wouldnt't it be easier to have the system add the level of the game in the title of the video? That way you can decide whether or not you want to watch it, and the player can still have some freedom in terms of what they want to record.

baodeus4005d ago

@arai

"@ claterz what about friends sending you a video, you don't know it's content before viewing it. "

If PS4 improve on connection/cross game chat/etc.....it is really that hard to add a spoiler alert/note on video that you send to your friends?

Garbanjo0014006d ago

Exactly. I am seeing a lot of negative posts about the share button. As I said above I like the concept. I don't want to watch the next spoiler of a game I want to play badly. That's just stupid.

jcnba284006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

The Wii U has a function where you can tag your post as a "spoiler" before you post it on Miiverse so people will have the option to view it or not. I'm sure sony will have something similar to this with their sharing options.

mcstorm4006d ago

Lol like how you got some disagrees because you said the Wiiu has a spoiler option. I think your right I see both Sony and Microsoft having options like this on there next consoles.

OC_MurphysLaw4006d ago

I think the disagrees are for Sony having a similar spoiler tag system. Seems like Sony will just let devs block content instead and thus avoid the spoiler issue altogether by controlling what can be recorded.

wishingW3L4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

so basically the share button is useless? Because seriously this kind of kills the point of it.

OC_MurphysLaw4006d ago

Yes and no. Yes from a video upload point of view since it will have limitations but don't forget the share button is most assuredly tied into sharing you screen play..

OC_MurphysLaw4006d ago

Point of clarification. .. the button won't be useless. The recording video will have some limitations so for some that may seem "useless" but there clearly will be more functionality to it regardless.

lodossrage4006d ago

As the article states, the game makers themselves will have the option to pick and choose what can't be shared.

smashcrashbash4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Exactly. If the developer decides they want to keep certain things from people because of spoilers and such it is up to them not Sony. Once again the blame goes to Sony when it will be the developers who are deciding if they want to do it or not.For example Two Souls which is mostly story based Quantic Dreams might decide not to use the share button at all so everyone can work it out themselves.Others can decide that they don't care what you share and not use it at all therefore no restrictions. Sony is giving them the option and it is not a rule set in stone or Sony's decision. Why is it that Sony haters AND fans over react to EVERYTHING? If a developer wants to keep something from everyone that is up to them and their reasons. You don't read, talk crap, then wonder why you get disagrees

Hicken4006d ago

Basically? How did you even come to that conclusion?

a_squirrel4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

And here I wanted to upload myself dancing naked in front of the TV.
ANOTHER LIMITATION.

OC_MurphysLaw4006d ago

LOL...can we agree that is a good limitation?

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 4005d ago
hesido4006d ago

I don't remember them claiming that everything could be shared. Most things will shareable, don't worry. It's for the good of everyone. Those that are really really interested in sharing spoilers can still buy themselves a capture card, if that was your main purpose.

lodossrage4006d ago

They never said EVERYTHING was shareable.

Not just that, if you read the article, the INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPERS are the ones that make the choice on what they do/ don't allow to be shared.

banjadude4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Besides people not even reading the article, it would seem these trolls have "selective memory" too. SMH.

LoveOfTheGame4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Well in the same sense if PS4 let devs control whether their used games are able to work or not and then say the PS4 plays used games it makes the point moot if most devs make their games unusable if used.

Edit: It won't necessarily be a lie but more a way to cover themselves.

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack9h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

Duke195h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

Duke191h ago(Edited 57m ago)

Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs? Look at what happened to Final Fantasy as a recent example - there is pretty clear FF fatigue setting in because they are now pumping out titles in the franchise every few years. Pumping out more games faster doesn't always make a series better.

There are plenty of options to make new games, not just create more titles in the same universe at a faster pace.

mandf2h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor4h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave2h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

Skuletor54m ago

Think about it, they're already bug filled messes on their current schedule, can you imagine how much worse it would be if they rushed things?

Duke1959m ago

I mean you aren't wrong. People are going to complain about anything

isarai3h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris2h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.
