What's in a Name? A Look at How We Perceive Sequels and Their Faithfulness to Identity

It's the catch 22 for the ages: does a developer move their series forward with new ideas, risking alienation, or keep giving their fans more of the same, risking stagnation? A cursory glance at initial and even post-release fan reception of reboots or sequels to long-running game franchises indicates that, more often than not, a developer experiences alienation at the first suggestion of change in a series.
