GCO: "Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said that “every” PlayStation 4 title will be available for both download and retail sale. However, Yoshida didn't mention if the digital releases would be simultaneous."
Very smart move.
I've always said that this is exactly how they're going to phase out GameStop and the likes. So their days are numbered.
How exactly are they going to phase out Gamestop if retail disks will still exist?
The publishers behind your favorite games will still tell gamestop they can have day one DLC. Trust me, bro. But, this is great. Been enjoying the feature on my VITA. Should be made better on the PS4 with the whole "play while you download" feature.
No matter how much developers complain about Gamestop and used games sales, GS is one of, if not the biggest single retailer of games. They NEED GS as a store to sell and move their games. GS isn't going anywhere.
You have a point! Go to gamestop and pre order? Or click buy and play as game is installing? I have a feeling many will be tempted by the fact that their is no waiting time. What if they say "Pre order on psn and get gta5 2 days early"??
http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed... http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed... http://www.dmwmedia.com/new... http://business.financialpo... It's trend that will inevitably hurt the GameStop and similar retailers whose sold focus is video game sales the most. As opposed to Best Buys and others who sells many other things besides video games. Just look at what Steam has done to physical sales for PC Games. Gut not only that, it's instantaneous. As in you don't have to move from the couch. Plus going from one game to the next is a lot simpler as well. It's not something I foresee happening tomorrow, but it will happen.
Retail will always exist. These companies rely on stores to promote and show off their products.
More links. http://www.examiner.com/art... http://www.cnbc.com/id/4939... Retail will always be around. But specialized retail shops such as GameStop and the likes are going to become increasingly insignificant as more and more games are purchase directly from the consoles and PCs.
Thing is, it's always the best to have the physical thing. Resale value, collections, and overall just the feeling of having something physical. Cloud is convenient, but physical experiences matter most. Except with Kinect.
@Hammad Yes physical copies will be around for a long time, and Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Futureshop, Amazon, craiglists will always be around to sell them. All the retailers mentioned above have one thing in common, video games sales makes up a very small portion of their total inventory. GameStop on the other hand only sell video games, so the digital trend that's going on right now, will hurt them. And when that trend goes full steam (no pun intended) they will be phased out as they will no longer make enough money to keep actual stores running.
Wondering what those download sizes will look like
It doesn't really matter how big they are because the download are instant play. They said as soon as you start the download you can start playing the game as it continues to download.
That doesn't make any sense at all, especially as a reply to my comment. It doesn't really matter? Because every country/ISP has unlimited bandwidth and every consumer has 20TB HDDs ready. Yes, it does matter. And before anyone goes, no one is forcing you to download. Again, which is why I said I'm just wondering..
for full retail games I'm expecting anything from 7gb-25.
Downloads, mmm, I see it already the gap of bandwith minimal and the cable or 4g or, att or whatever companies are carrying their broadbands are going to place limits. Most cable companies and dish have download gaps, so 1 disk 50 to 100 gb mmm thats all the downloads for this month folks lol...
This is great news.
Which is awesomely amazingness, because now we can play them instantly while it downloads in the background.
what if your account is fucked, and you have to pay the game again?
Call Sony and get it transferred. I've had a similar situation with SingStar songs. No problem.
Well if you got your account working back again, just go to your download list and you should be able to get your games that you downloaded. I assume so, since the PS3 does that.
Very nice, although I'll be buying all my games on disc. Great for those who want to go digital only.
If they make the price of digital copies the same this would be good........all digital library to save space 0
But now we are talking about games being in the realm of 25+GB, minimum. Paired with a 500GB HD (just what I'm estimating) and it won't take too too long to fill up. Now it would be great if you can plug in a USB HD for more space, then you could pad on a big 2-4TB expansion.
Fingers crossed they get to be the same price, but there's pretty big pressure on publishers not to under-price themselves at retail. Blame GAME + Friends for high digital prices, not the people who make and distribute games.
ill need to buy 2tb HDD for this
If the PS4 digitals are priced like the PS3 digital versions are now I'll pass! If PS4 games cost £50 at launch like the PS3 games did they could be £60-65 on the store!
That's great and all BUT how large are PS4 games going to be?
There is no way in hell I'm going to buy my games on digital. I like to own my copies.
Lol. They just announce that the vita digitally is outselling the ps3 but thanks to this the ps4 will demolish
So, 500GB HDD is not enough.
Why didn't they mention this in the keynote? This is great news. I love buying games through steam, something about the instant purchase and having your entire catalog of games all in one place and being able to access them all similar to your digital music library is very cool. @AltinYumruk You'll need at least a terabyte of space. Hopefully Sony will allow you to upgrade you HD similar to how you would on the PS3. Wow a console with a terabyte HD in it sounds crazy. lol
I'll be happy to play on both Blu & HDD. Weren't Sony planning on using Bluray XL for the PS4? Does this mean that we can watch 4K Bluray movies could one day?
It has been announced that the PS4 will support 4K movies; all that's needed is for the movies to be put on Blu Ray. And that's a given, as it's not exactly like they can put 4K on DVD.
Theres one thing I need to know. Can you re-download the PSN titles you already have?
