Dragon's Dogma Review | gamrReview

gamrReview: "A little bit of Shadow of the Colossus here, some Skyrim there, sprinkled with some MMORPG sensibilities and a hefty cleft of Monster Hunter and you have something that, although perfectly decent, fails to reach the heights of its influences. Always decent, never outstanding; disappointing."

A little bit of Shadow of the Colossus? :o

OK, I'm tempted, even if it's getting average ratings.

Torillian4333d ago

Probably just means that there are some large bosses though, remember that game all the Nintendo fans were calling SotC-like because of one giant boss in there?

Machina4333d ago

lol yes, I do. It looked awful.

TheLeapist4333d ago (Edited 4333d ago )

There are lots of large enemies and you can climb on them. No where near the scale of SotC obviously but it's still a really cool element.

I've been playing this game for the past 2 weeks and I'm absolutely loving it.

evilbart4333d ago

you wont regret it best game i have played this year loved it

It's flat out the most complete RPG of this gen (extremely fun to boot).
Just got the platinum trophy a couple of days ago.

Story is the weakest spot of this game, but it makes up for it with great to intense gameplay.

Starts off very hard, gets easy then gets really hard later.

Exploration is fun both at day and night because nights can reveal some new enemies.

I personally believe that this game has borrowed ideas (like the majority of any human creation) from Shadow of the Colossus, Dark/Demon Souls, Monster Hunter, and Skyrim. Yet know that the elements from these games do not overshadow the unique experience that is Dragon's Dogma.

Mutant-Spud4333d ago (Edited 4333d ago )

Dragon's Dogma is basically a linear game set in a very big world with a ton of quests to do, if you wander around exploring you'll only find yourself frustrated because the quest structure sends you to every important location with a specific objective, Example, I discovered the water god's temple by accident and spent a couple of hours going through it all, got the tablets, sold them and then realised I had to go and do the whole thing again for the Wyrm Hunt. Due to a corrupted save I've started again as a mystic Knight and I've found if you visit every quest board and major NPC, accept all the quests it's smooth sailing because your "hunt 10 wolves" type quests finalise without having to return to the quest giver and as soon as you step outside Gran Soren you're swarmed by enemies anyway.
It's not really like Skyrim other than that he map is huge, it's somewhat like Dark Souls in it's overall atmosphere of impending doom and horror but it's nowhere near as difficult because you can save anywhere.
This is a great game, one of the few RPG's released in the past couple of years that I've not got bored with after 20 hours.

I would have bought it with online co-op...

Gen0ne4331d ago

You're missing out homie. I thought/said the same thing. I'm a online co-op freak. But really, this game rocks and I struggle to put the damn controller down. Anybody with the 360 version that wants a level 34 maxed out mage for 0 Rift Crystals, check out Bootsy. She's my finely crafted ass kicker.

Like a dry parmesan you say? Now I'm hungry.

Dragon's Dogma Is Still Amazing

Although the sequel is on the near horizon, the original Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen remains a fantastic action RPG, still worth playing.

A lot of the quest lines in Skyrim are good(not all and they don’t add up as a whole if you do thieves guild mage fighters guild etc) The dragons are very lame after the first few times and the combat is clunky as it always has been. The stupid sprint button is ridiculous.

Overall I agree DD is the better rpg game.

Both have theirs strengths and weaknesses but Skyrim should be so much more being the 5th game in Elder Scrolls series.

Excited to see what they add on to DD 2.

Unfortunately all they have done to Elder Scrolls since Morrowind is take things out (minus the sprint button which is so lame because you can kill dragon god like creatures but can’t run for more than ten seconds without getting tired)

anast52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

I liked the vampire questline and the return to Morrowind was okay, but the problem with Skyrim was the lack of consequence. There is almost no point in the quests. After I realized this, I started messing around with the mods and then quit playing. Though, I did spend 300 hrs. on modded content, but this is telling of how bad the game kind of is.

If DD was the size or close to the size of Skyrim, It would have been the primer fantasy game back then. I hope they up the size with DD2.

5 Games To Play While Waiting For Dragon's Dogma II

Daman Shelley from NoobFeed writes - Dragon's Dogma is truly a one-of-a-kind game, and there really is no other game like it, but there are a few that come close. Whether with their fantasy settings, the ability to climb mountains, or just with the overall same charm as Capcom’s iconic RPG. Here's a list of games that will hopefully scratch that Dragon's Dogma itch.

every gamer should play this game

gold_drake102d ago

cant wait for it, feb and march are busy busy months ha.

SovereignSnaKe102d ago

I can still hear the title screen music in my head after nearly 12 years. Loved every minute of it.

MrNinosan102d ago

I have no issues filling my time til DD2.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will probably me more than enough.
More terrified I won't be done in time.

DivineHand125102d ago

Try not to burn yourself out before the game releases. This is going to be a long and immersive RPG like the first one.

The games in this article are all great and I believe the people who are excited for Dragons Dogma 2 probably already played most of those games.

For now, I recommend you prepare yourself for long play sessions if you will be picking up Dragons Dogma at launch.
