NPD: 30% of xbox 360 owners aware of Hd Graphics, 40% of PS3 owners aware of Blu-ray player

Microsoft and Sony have both been pushing high-definition visuals this generation, but do people care? So far, the hardcore have been the early adopters of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while the mass market waits for the right games (i.e. Grand Theft Auto IV) and price drops to make this generation financially viable. Naturally, then, you might assume gamers with machines now are aware of their HD capabilities, right?

40% of PS3 owners are aware of Blu-ray player? People must be really stupid these days. Theres a big fat Blu-ray logo on the front of the box, and one on the front and back of each game. There's a Blu-ray logo anywhere that has anything to do with a PS3.

Not knowing theres HD in a Xbox 360 or PS3 is understandable. But Blu-ray? That's just silly. Some may not use the Blu-ray functionality, but not knowing it's there is really dumb.

Not to long ago, I didn't really understand the true meaning of High Defition myself. I had an XBOX 360 and I would play it on a regular TV, I knew they were HD consoles but I thought a TV was a TV and sure maybe it looks slightly better in High Defintion, sorta like DVD is better than VHS. If it wasn't because I'm such a hardcore PS3 fan, that when the PS3 came out and I heard it had the best graphics and Blu ray and all that, I began to pay attention and learned how important High Definition really is. Now I know what HDMI is and what Component cables are. I know 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p. All because I was a hardcore gamer and wanted the absolute best for my PS3. But it was like a real transformation. I went from not caring to suddenly the difference between 1080i and 1080p was the most important thing in the world. That kind of interest was what educated me.

So I'm not surprised that only 30 percent of XBOX 360 owners are aware of High Defintion. It's kinda sad really, the majority of people are playing PS3 and XBOX 360 on regular TV's, when they paid $400 or $500 for their console. No wonder the Wii is making a killing.

So people own a Nintendo Dual Screen (NDS) and 47% are not aware there's two screen on it... 43% are not awere it's touch screen, and 51% are not aware there's a stylus function...

The way I look at it, the headline says owners, but the survey was mainly people who DO NOT OWN any of these systems, but are likely purchasers... So when they call a 6 years old boy about if he would buy a PS3, kid likely said yes. When asked about HD, kid probably said I want a PS3, when they asked about bluray, kid probably said "did I won a PS3?"

30% of 360 owners know about its HD Capablilities and about 30% of those 30% have defective consoles so that number drops drastically so that explains the small percentage of confused 360 fans that think the 360 has better graphics then the PS3. It was worse than that when I worked for Gamestop. Until I figured out that it was useless trying to REASON with the average American consumer...I would get in these discussions with them. Here is an example, a lady walks in and asks if I have Mario for the Playstation, I tell her that Mario is a 1st party game and that Nintendo would never allow a Mario game on the Playstation. She frowns, her face reddens and she replies to me..."look sir, I know that the Mario game is on the Playstation so why do you have to lie to me?" I would again tell her that it is a Nintendo only game and she would get even madder and reply..."Look, I just saw it at Target, if you do not want my business just say so." So, I figured out that the best thing to do when I was confronted by such ignorance was to tell them that we were sold out or that we do not carry that game. Worked like a charm.

I have a 61" samsung 1080p dlp tv, it cost me 1799 at secondact.com. Once you watch a bluray movie on this screen you would rather not watch it in dvd. Trust me, when I say you can tell a difference. Which is why i bought 300 on bluray and not dvd, it makes a huge difference.

I just do not understand how anyone could purchase a PS3 and spend $500-700 on games, and extra controller, etc. and NOT bother to find out what the Blu-ray logo on the machine is. on normal consumers? 30~40% is really good considering that most people only own a Standard Definition TV. I guess Sony seems to be doing a better job at informing their customers, but right now it's limited by overall tech-awareness. Expect this percentage to grow to around 80~85% over the next few years as more and more HD sets are sold.

Most people arn't tech heads, or do any research before the buy. Most people wouldn't know what resolution means, or what Blu-ray/HD-DVD is yet, because its not really mainstream yet. Not too far fetched people buy consumer electronics all the time, lets say a person buys a sound system they know it has top notch capabilities because its all over the manual and the unit but that doesn't mean they know what DTS, PCM, HI-FI Sterio, PLII, Dolby Digital, Coaxal Digatal Audio, Toslink is or what they need to use to bring out the best in what they buy.

There are 3 different card slots on the PS3. 1 memory stick, 1 sd, and 1 (oh frack...I forgot) anyhoo, these allow the user to instantly transfer any saved file like pictures or movies from the memory card to the PS3. That is it. Not a huge deal, just another added convenience that the PS3 has.

With my game console it's all good. I'm playing 1080p with my PS3.

But what about cable TV? I have a Direct TV box and I'm watching TV and I know it looks like crap. How can I get my cable to look better on my HDTV?

My parents are the same as that guy who said his dad is always watching standard TV on his HDTV.

I haven't got to much into that, but I would guess for starters there is a better connection in the back of my reciever to connect to an HDTV with than the crap wire I have right now.

I buy every bit of HD that my cable company offers and honestly it's like 20 channels. I get all of the major networks and about 16 other channels. Most of it really sucks most of the time.

A simple pair of rabbit ears or other antenna hooked into the TV's ATSC tuner will let you watch local network stations in HD if they are available (by now they probably are).

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

This just shows that some boxes have too much put in them. The extra features of the 360 and PS3 are nice, but the reason I don't own one is actually because of so many of those extra features. I can't afford to spend $200 more on extras that I'll never even use.

Now, I don't think there's much of an excuse for not knowing about the HD potential of your console, which is a feature you're likely to use in the next 5 years, but when people aren't even educated about the basics of their consoles, I think its fairly safe to say that there's too much the console can do, too much the consumer is paying for, when many don't know about more important things, and those who do know don't even care half the time.

Gaming should be what these consoles are about. I guess that's why the Wii is winning, its about gaming, not about the extras.

Ps1
Expansion port, never used by any company except cheat devices, And imports, Phased out within 3 years.

Link Port:used by about 30-40 games, phased out within 3 years.

Ps2:Ilink, Used by 3 companies phased out in 2 years

Hard drive: used by 2-4 games in the US (in japan like 60 games used it) phased out in the slimline, and pretty much no longer sold after 5 years.

The ps3 will be the same.

You're 100% correct on all of those, but don't you think that they've learned from their mistakes by now?

The vast majority of the added functionality in the PS3 is firmware based anyway, and somehow I doubt they're gonna backtrack just to get rid of things that nobody supports in that respect.

Even hardware wise, we're already seeing devs use the storage capacity for games, and there are people watching Blu-Rays on their PS3s as well. I don't care what sort of excuse anyone comes up with, whether the compression isn't used enough or hi-def sound can't be noticed, blah blah blah. The fact remains that enough people are using the feature so that it's here to STAY.

Do you honestly believe that the HDMI port will be phased out within the next few years? Think again, since most(if not all) HDTVs have at least one connector for it. What about the USB ports? Fat chance there as well, there's entirely too many different uses for those four little ports themselves.

HDD maybe? nope, games have been using it since launch with no signs of slowing down...in fact they're only getting *gasp* BIGGER! Do I even need to bring up bluetooth? Maybe if you don't ever plan on buying a controller.

The card reader is the only thing I can see that could go, and even then, a simple external USB device is all you would need if you really covet that functionality.

If you look FORWARD instead of BACKWARD, since you know, that's how time moves anyway, and used a little bit of reasoning...JUST A LITTLE, you'd realize that Sony has most definitely learned from their mistakes. Argue high price point if you want, that's bound to come down, and if you need proof of that, just look into your way-back machine one more time at um...every video game console ever released.

Regardless of what you may think of the company or their lineup, hardware wise, they've played their cards right this time, ESPECIALLY when it comes to reliability. Take off whatever goggles you've got on, you've spoken with intelligence before, so I doubt you're any kind of fanboy.

If you're used to standard def, and you play a PS3 or 360 on a standard def TV, you're not really all that likely to know exactly what it is you're missing out on.

Someone who moves from an HDTV will see the difference, but someone who never saw their game played in HD won't realize anything because they've yet to see it.

I think the survey methods used here are a bit questionable (especially mentioning 6 year old respondants). What 6 year old would be able to go out and buy ANY of these systems without their parents...short answer = none.

On another related note I am sick of hearing about the uninformed consumer who has no idea what they are looking at or buying. If that is the way they choose to go through life, so be it. We cannot allow herd mentality to derail or delay technological advancement now can we? It is all well and good that Nintendo has found a way to re-release a last gen console with a gimmick control system to sell the 'casual gamer', but look what is happening to them...they are eroding there core fanbase. Those hardcore Ninty fans that have literally carried Nintendo through it's dark period are now being all but abandoned in favor of parlor/party games that are played at nursing homes!!! I would see more value in it if I DIDN'T see all the extra stuff, because I would assume the higher price went to a better gaming experiance for me. However, I don't see the "value" in paying for Microsoft allowing me to put music on the hard drive and playing it during a game. Even if it added $1 to the price, its not worth it to me or the millions of others who have a CD player.

The PS3 has bluray, and we'll assume for a moment that this raised the store price by $100. Well, I don't want this hooked up to the TV everyone is watching, so I can't use HD, but at least there will be less disc switching. Assuming minimum wage in the USA, after only switching discs for 1025.5 minutes, I'll break even on the $100 mark up. I don't plan on switching that much in the CD player that replaces the 360's music feature.

The real advances in gaming are comming from Nintendo. You know what the last gimmick Nintendo gave people? The D pad, and that didn't stick around at all, now did it? The informed consumer will know what their console is able to do, but they will also know where real value lies, and that is in what they don't already have. The informed consumer with a PS2 may well buy a Wii and not a 360 or PS3 because they see that the extra things in the other consoles are things they already have, and high prices for extra graphics just doesn't cut it.

That being said, people SHOULD know most of what they're buying is able to do, so they don't assume wrong things, and so they don't get confused about what value someone working at the store tells them they're getting, when it may or may not be a value to them. It's ok not to know everything, and suprises in the form of an extra feature is never bad (as opposed to suprises like the RRoD), but the consumer does need to be more well informed about what they're buying, and in electronics right now, with so many different options, its troubling to see that not many people are doing their homework.
