Sony: 'Resistance 2 is About A 50Gig Game' - GTTV Extended Cuts

Actually, in an interview with Ted Price, he revealed that they could have used 50GB for the first Resistance but they probably wouldn't have had enough content on there. Also, they did not wanna use 50GB on their first game on the PS3.

Now that the gloves are off and they practically know a lot more about the PS3 than some of the other developers, they is not stopping them.

50GB is something I could expect from Kojima and MGS4. Not to say Insomniac isnt talented, but they are really surprising me with the unbelievably high quality games they are releasing and developing.

Sony was so right by putting Blu-Ray in the PS3. I always knew the space would eventually be needed. Sony sure made alot of people eat their words. So many people were saying that there wouldn't be a need for a 25GB disc, and there are already 2 50GB games in the pipeline. Maybe more!!!

I didnt even like FPS, until I played Resistance, and since then I have gotten into the FPS genre a little more, and Resistance remains my favorite becasue of the light hearted approach to it. Also gotta love the weapons and the 40 player deathmatch.
I cant wait to try more weapons in a 60 player match.

Don't forget, Insomniac also used 22GB of the 25GB Blu-ray for Ratchet & Clank Future. They're taking advantage of this extra space. We may need that quad-layer 100GB Blu-ray disc before we know it, or better yet, TDK's experimental 200GB Blu-ray disc. :)

What I've read and what I'm told is... yes. The 100GB quad-layer disc exists and is readable from a standard BD drive like that in the PS3, so we could see it before too long. I also understand that current examples of 200GB and 250GB BD discs (which also exist) require special optics, so the PS3 wouldn't be able to use those without a hardware upgrade.

There's no excuse for every PS3 game not to take up the entire space. 360 games would probably take up the space if they weren't compressed, so there's no reason a PS3 game uncompressed shouldn't take up a big portion of the space.

It's a very misleading comment to say that it takes up a 50gb disc without specifying how much of that data in uncompressed.

they used 25gig to store multiple copies of textures to cut down loading times (something that's not possible on the 360- and no, i don't know why i had to throw that in, open zone and all that you know)

even if the single-player in Res 2 is short, you will surely be able to clock in the hours on MP and 8-player Co-op

but Res 1 single-player was quite lengthy, so i expect nothing less from Res 2

Well considering only RPGs on floppy disks took days to finish, I don't think size is proportional gameplay time. But if you look at graphics and visuals, then Blu Ray will easily take the lead by allowing lossless textures and audio for every PS3 exclusive title.

It's all down to the developers, not necessarily the platform. You can use all the space in the world and your game can still suck. Luckily, developers seem to be finding fantastic uses for Blu-Ray, such as (as heyheyhey mentioned) copying multiple textures to cut down loading times.

Shame developers like Capcom seem to still need 5gb of HDD space for just about every PS3 game they make. It's as if they're doing it by purpose or something.

wrong, here's something i had to explain to TheRETARD a little while back:

"while the 2X BD drive in the PS3 IS actually slightly slower than the maximum read speed of the 360's 12X DVD drive- there are a few catches:

first off BD has the same read speed across the whole disk- while DVD is faster on the outer layers, but slower on the inside

2X BD is slower than the outer layers of DVD, but faster than the inner layers- and while devs mostly put important files on the outer layers, they are running out of this outer layer space (you WILL see slower 360 loading times in the future because of this, i know you will be in denial about this too, but just sit tight and watch)

the second catch is this- BD doesn't need to use installs to counter BD being slower than max. DVD speed- Devs use the masive extra space to store duplicate textures to speed up loading times- this technique isn't possible on the 360

this is why games like Uncharted don't need install yet have only one loading time and have outstanding graphics

and those installs are there for a reason- loading times on PS3 for DMC and LP are faster than on the 360 due to this

However, in the digital realm, the size of the files = uncompression, especially regarding audio; that's a big bonus to have pure audio that unaltered by codec restrictions. Also, the amount of included textures can benefit greatly.

You can certainly argue that quality is not directly related to quantity. Look at Tetris, or for a more modern example, look at fl0w. In fact, look at most flash games on the web. These are simple games, and are typically tons of fun.

That's a pretty extreme example, however. Take Ratchet & Clank. It's a pretty simple game, mostly. I mean, it's not hard core in the way that Gears Of War or Halo or Resistance or MGS are hard core. Still, Insomniac was able to take advantage of that BR disc to expand upon the game in ways that wouldn't have been possible on a single DVD.

It doesn't mean every game needs to fill 50GB, but many will certainly benefit from it. What I'd really like to see is Microsoft make the digital download argument for games of this size. Please, entertain me.

We know it's got 8 person co-op for online. That specific co-op is a different storyline from the main single player mode(although not as in depth). We know that the story will be told from the FP view the entire time and will be more in depth than the first. We know that the online will have 60 people. We also know that to control those 60 people, insomniac has implemented a class/squad system. We also know there will be vehicles online too. To top that off, we know that the engine used in the game is the same as R&C and of course RFOM 1. We know that the leap from RFOM to R&C is the same as the leap they made from R&C to RFOM2. meaning this game will look bonkers. That's a lot to know about a game.

I never said the game looks bad or anything. I think it looks great, and will probably be even better than the first. Size can be a good thing, and bad. What worries me a little is how they are going to accomplish 60-player multiplayer levels that are fun to play. Not the easiest thing to design =)

Btw, Heavenly Sword took up 25gb and lasted for 6-7 hours. Mass Effect has 20,000+ lines of dialog - roughly the equivalent of 20 movies. It also has a word count of around 400,000 words - somewhere in the area of 4-5 full novels, and takes around 20 hours to finish not counting side quests. It all fits nicely on a dual layer dvd.

What does that tell us? What matters is how they handle the data, not the size of it.

Please don't compare this game to Gears.. Gears1 absolutely b!tch slapped RFOM in sales, graphics, gameplay and popularity. Gears 2 has the pedegree to do it again. I saw the original interview, it was only a few minutes. This one was much better. Definitely worth the attention for all PS3 owners (though it should also include PS2 and PSP).

I don't think they're boasting so much about the size of their game, but rather about their privilege to be able to develop a game that could utilize that kind of space. Microsoft doesn't want multi-disc games for the 360, so this is a PS3 selling point. It's also going to continue to attract developers who see it as liberating.

One of the first things about FFVII that really caught media attention was the use of 3 CD-Roms...by far the biggest to hit the PS1 at that point...with a lot of attention hovering around 'what is taking up all that space?'...at that point in time the N64 and PS1 were neck and neck in monthly sales...

people talked about how big the PS1 games were getting before they were released...then the big games actually released...roughly 2 years after the system launched...and everyone knows the rest...

Kind of funny how it was back then...There was an army of cartridge jamming N64 kids that swore CD's were not needed for games...that a gamer shouldn't have to put up with loading times...that 'space' isn't needed for better games...then FFVII dropped, with the 2 disc MGS and RE2 a year later...all of which royally wrecked every argument the N64 crowd had...and the sales from '97 on reflected exactly that...lather, rinse, repeat for DVD about 4 years later...look what happened...not surprisingly...we are involved in the exact same thing right now...who would have guessed that?

And believe it or not, graphics and audio assets take up a LOT of space, especially normal maps. That 10GB of data constituted every sound effect , every line of dialogue, all the music, foley work, etc. 10GB isn't actually all that much, especially when you start creating a large library of work.

Hell, some of the physics animations I run take up 2~5 GB for just a few seconds of footage.

Game length is not dependent on storage capacity; the quality of the game though actually is, depending on whether or not the developer takes full advantage of it. If they can stream in 2GB of data per level, that's fine by me.

Also, these games aren't being compressed, which is why they are taking up so much space. If and when the time comes, they can compress the games again.

Final Fantasy, Ridge Racer Type4 are just two off the top of my head, but yeah, your right, not too many multi-disc games...come to think of it, I think RR-T4 was on a single disc, but had multiple discs because it included the original arcade game as well.

I think the compression is a valid thought. You hear nothing but uncompressed audio taking up 12gig and 17gig and wonder, why not compress the audio? But I am sure when it comes down to that, they will, it just makes since. Compress the audio so it fits on a 25 or 50 gig bd disc, or spend more money on the authoring because you need to fit the game on the dual layer / tripple layer / quad layer BD disc. The money saved has to be there.

I stated this in a earlier response in MGS, I doubted that the game while requiring a 50gb disc actually took up all 50gigs, and was quickly corrected. I still find this fact suprising. The system is less than 2yrs old, and there are already 2 games in production which will make use of the full 50gb disc. That is both very cool and scary at the same time.

I hope the content on both of these games are worth all the space.

Which final fantasy? I know for a fact X, X-2, and XII were single disc. That only leaves XI, which doesn't really count as it's a MMO with several expansions.

The only games I remember having two discs were MGS3 Subsistence, where the second disc was extra content and MGO1, and GOW2 where the second disc was a making of DVD.

Well, it's not just that. In theory, let's say that having only one disc allows the game to access to larger amounts of textures, bringing a more varied environment. Splitting across 2 discs requires that the textures to be separated, and space is still taken up by the game engine itself. I'm not sure if I'm right, but it sounds right to me. You forget that on PC, you can a: install the entire game on the HDD; and b: have higher hardware specs than are required to play the game. So your argument kind of falls apart, especially considering there are games already shipping on more than one DVD for PC. What's going to happen when PC manufacturers start putting Blu-ray drives in standard?

You probably shouldn't talk condescendingly when you don't know what you are talking about. When a PC game installs, it's not just copying files onto a hard drive. It is also uncompressing files. For example, Crysis requires 12 GB of space on the hard drive to install.

The only reason PC games require you to have your disc in the drive is so that they know you actually own it.

Console games have to run the code and load the files of a game from the disc, which means they can only compress files so much without incurring a performance penalty or increased loading times.

Regardless of how PCs do it, 360 still gets HD quality. It's a matter of the engine, it has very little to do with the amount of space taken up by textures etc. If the engine outputs in HD, it's an HD game, regardless of whether or not it takes up 2 gbs or 50.

a lot of great stuff is coming in 2008, and it's been confirmed. while release dates are often moving, he reiterated numerous times throughout the interview that these titles were releasing in 2008.

You guys do realise that although blu-ray has the added advantage of more space on the disc, it also ensures that data on the disc has to be partial installed onto the ps3 harddrive in order to compensate for the long loading times...? Does everyone just ignore that fact, or do they seriously not know.

It takes much longer to read 50gb of data as opposed to 9gb. Thats why you have to do partial installs (if you dont, load times are horrible). Hell a lot of Resistance textures were put on the disc twice so that they could be put onto the harddrive and then the PS3 wouldnt have to load off the disc everytime.

Most of the 50gb of data could easily be compressed, and the quality really isnt affected at all. Hell no games that are multi-platform have been hurt by compression to fit on a DVD-9 disc, visually or audio wise...

Sorry, but that installation procedure is Capcom's way of making the streaming process easier for their developers.
No other game on the PS3 uses the same streaming process as Capcom, with Uncharted being an excellent example of how seamless streaming is done right. Uncharted's first batch of data when you start the game takes less than 5mins...I would say around 3mins to install. From there the game installs the next level to the hard drive while you're playing the current level and this is consistent throughout the entire game, which equals 0 load times.

The best part of this interview is where they talk about M$ making alot of noise about GTA. Saying most people grew people grew up with GTA on the PS brand and the whole time remaining cool and relax the entire time not worrying about one title like mircosoft tends to do. I think shipping GT prologue and GTA in a couple weeks apart was probably one of the smartest moves Sony ever did. GT series is the number 1 ever selling PS game followed by GTA series at number 2 and for alot of people that is like heaven. PS3 can deal with uncompressed data a lot easier than compressed data, while 360 is the opposite.

Decompression takes more memory, so it actually gives better results to make games with uncompressed sounds and textures on PS3.

I'm not saying they don't have a right to say it, but I think interviews where reps do nothing but flaunt all the good things they have without admitting any of the negatives are just harder to take at face value. If he would have gone out there and said, "we still have a few hurdles to get by in the console war" instead of "Blu-ray good, Wii gona lose" I wouldn't have turned it off half way through.

I also hate when a developer gets interviewed with a representative of the console manufacturer. Keep those interviews seperate. It's just annoying to know that every word in that interview was probably in some way orchestrated by sony PR instead of the dev's honest opinion.

However, at the same time you have games like Call Duty 4 and the upcoming RE5 that look mind blowing and those games ARE....Muliplatform.
