Spencer: Exclusives Are Critical To Platform Success, More Coming On Xbox One, Support For KI & More

Microsoft's Studios Boss Phil Spencer has just shared some interesting information via Twitter on Killer Instinct, whether or not Xbox One will get more exclusives like Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Support for Killer Instinct, E3 2014 and many more.

I want to see some Sunset Overdrive gameplay. Pretty much banking on it. Also would love to see a demo of the Quantum Break destruction engine. Crackdown would be nice, though I doubt we'll see it as soon as E3. Forza Horizons 2 seems likely. Desperately want to see some Halo 5 gameplay, preferably multiplayer. Also hoping to see Class 4 from Undead Labs, though I'm doubtful.

Then, some newly announced exclusives would be nice.

As far as multiplats, I want to see Battlefront, The Division, Witcher 3, and a whole crapload of Destiny, including the competitive multiplayer. Though Bungie has a tendency to slow-drip information about their games right up until release. I want to see the new COD, and I want to see a revival of Skate, SSX, Fight Night, next-gen NHL game (get busy, EA...). MOST OF ALL! I want Ubisoft to re-release Ranbow Six 3 for next gen consoles, since it seems like they will be sitting on Patriots for the next 20 years. Would rather have R63 than another iteration in the series. Other things I'm excited for from UBI: Splinter Cell, F2P Ghost Recon for next-gen consoles, Farcry. (get busy UBI...)

If Planetside 2 hasn't released by then, I want a release date. Been waiting long enough. Tick tock... Also would really like to see Sony announce a lot more in the realm of competitive-multiplayer AAA retail exclusives. A good long look at H-hour would be a good start. Was looking a little janky last time we got to see it. Also, eagerly awaiting Cell Damage =D

Come on, I'm a PC gamer and I'm not perfectly happy with Microsoft's treatment of PC gaming, but to say they've had "zero support for PC for the last 15 years" is beyond absurd.

I seem to remember Halo, Halo 2, Alan Wake, Age of Empires, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Crimson Skies, Fable, Fable 3, Gears of War, Microsoft Flight, Viva Pinata, Dust An Elysian Tale, LocoCycle, Mark of the Ninja and many other Microsoft Game Studios games on the PC over the years.

Could it be better? Sure, we PC gamers would love to have every game on our platform of choice. But realistically MS have a console platform they need to support and they need to have some of their games that are exclusive only to their consoles. It's just the way the console business works.

The quick port of Forza from Xbox One to PC was to show devs how easy it is to devlop on both wihtout having the additional overhead of having two teams develop on different platforms. Last generation their plan was to earn the respect of 3rd party devs and to support devs in a way that they chose to include xbox in projects sometimes only PlayStation would get, so that Xbox would be a go to brand for 3rd party devs.

MSFT said the new Xbox after the x360 would return to the strategy of exclusives, the original xbox had.

This was the plan announced a few weeks before the 360 launched. MSFT had to do this, the original xbox had lots of exclusives but lacked 3rd party support parity and multi plat brand recognition.

Exclusives coming to XB1 has nothing to do with sales from a mere few months of being in the market so far, these things were planned years ago.

If Sony and Microsoft both sold 80 million consoles, how much did exclusive content matter? Is it quality over quantity or is it about giving fans what they want?

Exclusives can be used as a commodity or they can be a serious loss of operating income. In 2008 we were hit with a global recession. Microsoft cut personel and unfortunately developers were part of the cuts. In 2010 Microsoft started rebuilding their first party studios.

Sony wasn't unaffected by the recession. They have been on a serious landslide since and haven't recovered. They have been losing talent, shutting down studios and restructuring others. This will have an impact on the amount of exclusive content they can provide.

It's no more absurd to think Microsoft can increase their first party offerings then it is to think Sony can continue to offer what they have in the past.

That MS has, despite failure to have any impact in Japan, RRoD, system bans and what that does to the 260's numbers, succeeded while Sony has only gone down hill. That for giving their in-house devs more freedom that they gained nothing, as the PS3 caught up and in some ways surpassed the 360 after it had a year and a half lead.

That MS has learned the need for exclusives now not from the mistake of not developing them in the past, but rather just by spontaneous revelation.

Actually it is a depression, and it's still getting worse. There's been no recovery, we just gave trillions to wall street who wasted it on buying worthless crap. Expect a much, much bigger collapse sometime down the road.

But everywhere is still collapsing. They just masked the collapse. In the U.S. there are 3 million less people working today then there were working a year ago. We haven't even talked about the EU or China.

Oh and old people aren't retiring and dropping out of the labor force, they are trying to return to work, and are the only ones successful as the 65+ is the ONLY age segment to have an increase in employment.

Sony has many more developers, and developers go through restructuring. I get where you are going, but just hearing a couple of devs are restructuring doesn't mean they can't pump out a bunch of exclusives. Don't forget compared to Microsoft they have a bunch more, who are working on games. In good times and bad, developers increase or decrease their employee count, gain or lose top people, and open or close various studios. It's the scale that matters, and we haven't seen that. Plus wasn't the Santa Monica thing an internal compliance matter like perhaps sexual harassment or something like that?

Microsoft must increase their 1st party offering or the Xbox One is dead in the water. Microsoft has money and has access to very low interest rates, if they want to increase their dev count, then they can easily. It's not a question of something preventing them, it's a question of what their vision is.

Seriously, in the great depression, lots of people were unaffected (or nearly so) and there was plenty of people partying down and spending lavishly in it. So even though we ARE in a depression, Microsoft has seen fit to waste money on the NFL deal for Xbox One, to pack in a device almost no one wants, and charge a premium price, more expensive then their previous console.

Sony has the devs, and even if they were slowed because of the depression, they are still working on projects, and the quality of a game is determined by how good of an idea the project is, and the competence of the people creating it.

Sony should have a pretty comparable PS4 lineup, plus or minus a bit, to what they did on PS3.

Microsoft, if they want, should have a bunch more then they had for the 360, and only poor leadership would continue the void. Let us also not forget that it wasn't just the depression, it was mostly Microsoft's change in focus. From normal games to KINECT games.

Sony as a company is doing quite badly, but the gaming division is doing quite nicely.

Sony also as a company is restructuring and spinning off various business segments, which should help with it's profitability going forward...and now they are going in on VR.

Of course again since we're still in the beginning stages of the worst depression in the history of mankind, the next leg down, bigger then 2008, will happen, we just don't know when. But until then, Sony's gaming division should be just fine, and Microsoft has the means to increase their 1st party exclusive games if they so desire.

Define "doing quite nicely". Last year the gaming division accounted for 0.2% of Sony's operating income. They were operating at a loss until the PS4 released bringing the division to a small profit at the end of the third quarter. At it's peak in the last 15 years, the Playstation accounted for 11.8% of Sony's fiscal profit back in 2002. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but they have accounted for very little if any in the last 5 years. I can PM the breakdown to you later if you would like.

Forza 5- about as boring as it gets, racing games almost always are (without a steering wheel ofcourse) and still without the addition of weather/night to spice things up and less content this is about as mundane as it gets..

Ryse- Yeah, this is the definition of "beautiful game but booooring" QTEs are NOT engaging gameplay..

Dead Rising 3- I completed every single dead rising game and they definitely always had that repetitive feel to it. its fun for an hour or so at time.The storyline was never good enough to grip me so it was just mashing buttons to kill zombies. FUN!

This goes for all the other games you mentioned. I highly doubt you completed all those games within 2 days like a few people i know have done with infamous SS.They said it was simply because it was open world and that it was engaging to explore the city of Seattle. I imagine that is far better than driving round in circles, hit the right button or simply mash buttons. The only exeption is Titanfall, but that isn't an exclusive and fps games are better in every way on PC. So that doesn't count.

Dead Rising 3 is an open world game....like infamous. The same new game that gets positive reviews for everything but the story.

So Phil, where are the hires or acquisition of developers? You'd think we would of heard such news by now.

You can't have new first party exclusive games (above and beyond the ones accounted for already) without creating/hiring or acquiring the people who will make those games.

Well it better have a lot of exclusives considering that MS abandoned the Xbox 360 years ago. And most of the Xbox 360 games they had in development they scrapped them and put on the Xbox One. It was like this at the beginning of last gen. MS had a lot of exclusive even tho most were 3rd party. But we'll see. I still bet Sony will have the most. Just like PS2 and PS3 gen.

I think MS have to make up for the messed they've been in from last year E3. This year will be about games and features for the X1. While SONY on the other hand will be focus on their VR and the exclusives game that will supporting it. Let's not forget SONY first party studios games.

I am starting to disagree with that logic of securing exclusives can make a platform successful.  Looking at the gaming aspect a good game can only be great if it has the healthy competiton to go along with it.  Looking solely at the Madden franchise.  EA with the sole rights to the NFL=Zero competition No other to compete with as far as football.  EA can't make a better game because we have nothing to compare a better game to anymore.  I'm talking about choice.  Now, it pans out to, it can either be liked more now that there is only one, or you can be hated because you have sole rights to a franchise.  So what of having exclusive rights to said game.  Titanfall for instance.  Did it hurt Respawn since they closed the door on SCE (PS3/PS4)? Maybe not so much hurt, but the foot is up the arse.  Respawn sold themselves short of a lot of $$$ and then some since the game was bundled free with the console.  I'd hate to be a developer looking at what could have been exponentially more vs. what it currently is. The competition of consoles is just the same.  You simply just can't make the claim that your console is better than the other if the competitor can't display what you have third-party.  It' ;s a smart move, but It's WEAK, It shows your FEAR IMO.  When Microsoft announced that they would get Final Fantasy last-gen, some were happy that the developer would get the chance to open up to the wider audience.  I looked at it as if to say "NOW LETS SEE THE COMPARISON, which console will sweep the rug.  I'll admit, wrong game to compare.  A game optimized for Sony ported to Microsoft.  Same would be if Halo or GoW did the same. Third-Party games are meant to show the muscle on both consoles especially at the begining of a GEN-Cycle.  We should be seeing a head to toe battle of comparisons of Titanfall PS4 and XBONE not a Unanomous 1st round knockout XBONE vs. PC Comparison.  Competition to flex your muscle.

Would you prefer Sonys approach? Being super quiet and sounds like they're just rolling in money and investing in VR. The problem with VR focus is less money is being put into new games, looks like they'll ride the indie train with their current line up of First/Second party studios.

Gamers want people like Phil Spencer interacting with their fanbase...for all the talk that you PS4 fanboys tout, I think you'd want this since you think "Sony cares about gamers!".

The reality is, I've been enjoying Infamous SS but it still doesn't beat KI/Ryse/Titanfall/PvZ GW...My PS4 has been collecting dust and I only play Infamous SS to continue my Infamous collection because I'm hoping that Sucker Punch can get a bigger staff for a MASSIVE Infamous game with a more diverse selection of powers.

The Xbox One is so clever that if you do a search for Sunset Overdrive or Quantum Break on any of its search functions it can't even show you a trailer for them.

And forget about finding an 'indie' section or specialist exclusive articles on the best of last gen like Alan Wake.

It is a fundamentally screwed up box with no respect for its future nor its past. Your only option for proper gaming entertainment on it is to buy its £60 games, to go bust buying more or less what you can get on Sony consoles for less (or even free - late PS3 stuff is still brilliant).

With its lack of indies, it's more like a souped up WiiU than a PS4. With Xbox Fitness and Kinect Sports Rivals Fitness it wants the female pound. It gives hardly the tiniest thought about the pound that made it in the first place- those looking for an affordable, easy, way to play PC games. No PC ports on here unless they're also on PS4.

It lives not a second in the past nor in the future. Like a hermetically sealed cash cow.

Nice, I'm loving all the news from MS lately, seems like they really have their $#!% together, and are on the right track. I'm really liking Phil Spencer as the lead, he seems to understand what gamers want....games. Whenever he has something to say, it's always great news, and/or showing that things are going in the right direction. I've never been so excited for an E3 before...even more than last year.

I honestly don't know why Xbox One gets such a bad wrap! I own Both PS4 and Xbox One! BOTH ARE GREAT SYSTEMS! Fanboys need to stop! Be open minded and stop focusing on which one is better then the other. I enjoy Both so I bought both if people can't afford both buy the one you enjoy the most, and game!

I complain because M$ makes it and has slapped their fans over the last 2 generations, especially towards the 2nd half of each consoles life.

where was the support for the 360 in the final years? what games did you have?

my argument is M$ doesn't care about their customers, doesn't look out for them. They just want to sell a system without much effort going into making it the best experience possible.

They charge a bs fee for live since it started, it provides nothing more than psn ever did, other than cross game chat.

They expect you to go through multiple failed 360's and come back just because your friends play call of duty, halo, or gears of war on xbox

There may be better value now with One, but before there wasn't on last gen consoles and they relied on people just casually buying the system because it seemed like everyone else did.
