Microsoft Wants to Fund Games to Own their IP; Denies Existence of Osaka Studio, Talks on New Games

Microsoft Game Studios boss Phil Spencer had quite a bit of information to share on what’s going on with the teams under his watchful eye today, and he seems to have changed his mind about a rather relevant detail: funding games in order to actually own their IP. He also denied the existence of the rumored (but never confirmed) Microsoft Game Studio in Osaka.

And with that being said that's why Sony has some of the best exclusives of all time.

I'm sure he'll shape up MS game Studio's this gen.

I'm glad fans are hammering down MS this gen and making sure they don't pull off with what they did in the latter half of 360.

Article title seems somewhat biased for something all the big players do in the gaming industry. I think its nice that microsoft is funding a lot of stagnant older IP's, some publishers have been pushing it and have lead to a lot of the best games of the past several year. Tomb raider, Hitman, Deus ex and killer instinct to name a few.

But I'm quite sure the writer will get all gitty when Sony announces uncharted 4 or the last of us 2

MS buy Remedy Already you know you want to, Make a new 1st party studio and let them make Blood Wake 2 & Crimson Skies 2. Split Rare into two groups Rare Kinect and Rare , let Rare bring back Kameo 2, Perfect Dark, Conkers, Viva Piñata, Banjoo & maybe some of there canceled IPs. Double Helix did a great job with KI, sign a new extended contract with them or bring them on board, KI still needs more modes, fatalities, story feature, characters and so in.

I agree, buy Remedy, they could be MS Naughty Dog, they are extremely talented. Quantum Break and afterwards Alan Wake 2, that would be amazing! I think what you said about RARE has already happened, there are a number of RARE studios, so hopefully we can expect some controller RARE titles. Double Helix did do a great job, more content for KI would be sweet as!

For the sake of the Xbox One MS dropped the ball a bit, not funding the game AND not making it exclusive to that one console.

If Microsoft create and fund their own first party studios to make compelling AAA games then that would be brilliant, because the last few years the 360 was a barren wasteland with the exception of Halo 4 and Gears Judgment.

Hopefully MS have learned from their mistakes and will be more supportive of XB1. Maybe if they utilised Rare more and got them to stop with Kinect projects then we'll see a difference.

Mike Ybarra the studio manager at Xbox was in Osaka a few days back so I still holding out hope. But then again both Platinum Games and Access Games are also in Osaka so it might be that.

Seriously? I've been saying that they want to control [everything]. Drm? E3? Duh, control the consumer is the ultimate IP. However, controlling consumer's favorite ip is the beginning, that's why pc gaming used to be solely Windows around the 3 (and on) generation(s).

Ms is good at that.

What's the fundamentals of this? Intellectual property. Ip. Owning the ip is more important to MS than owning the studio that started it. As an example, black tusk's new ip is put on the backburner because their new ip is worth less than their awesome reputation in addition to gears...

Money is relative to ownership. Ownership creates more money if you aren't completely dumb. That's the theory of many people who think money begets money (it takes money to make money).

"Luckily Rare does exist"... well, not luckily. It's not the same Rare and it's time for people to understand that. They just kept the name, but MS managed to destroy the studio people used to love. It does exist, but personally, I'm not expecting a lot of great stuff to come from them.

I like Phil Spencer. Such a respectful and honest gentleman. He respect MS competitors at the same time he is keeping a close eye on the game community, he knows that we want Shenmue. All of us.

Like Sony, he´s goin and try to bring Shenmue to X1.

That's why there needs to be tough competition. Can you imagine a world with only one choice as a gaming platform? If Sony went along with the DRM plans M$FT had we as consumers would be taking it deep.

Well, I'm into competition too, but damn is Microsoft one hell of a greedy company! I've been through 3 Xboxs that MS flat out wanted money to repair. One of the worst customer service I've ever experienced too. They were rude, and not to mention very unintelligent.

I was the sucker to keep giving them my money I guess, but I learned my lesson. I went with a PS4 this time around and have absolutely zero regrets. Sony and Nintendo's customer service were a million times better!
