Final Fantasy XV’s Battle System Won't Be Based on Lightning Returns

GR: The battle system in Final Fantasy XV won't be based on the system that Square Enix is introducing with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Between how long the game's been in development and it has a different director, would hope it had not relation to a newer title's mechanics.

dbjj120884169d ago

Yeah, I don't want the same systems from game to game, but I do hope Square has learned from the experimentation in in FFXIII-2 and FXIII-3

Godmars2904169d ago

Thought FF13-2 and FF13-3 were suppose to be "corrections" for FF13. Built on/introduced villages and towns where they weren't "necessary" to the story in the first.

-Foxtrot4169d ago

Yeah especially when the FF13 series battle system is terrible

I mean I want turn base back as much as the next guy but what we see in FFXV is better then FF13 and thats good enough for me because we know what it's already like since we've played with the battle system in Kingdom Hearts.

gamedebater4169d ago

FF:LR has a great battle system. replace outftis with characters and you have something even better

-Foxtrot4169d ago

@gamedebater

It's really not, even with characters it would still be bad compared to turn based or other battle systems.

Hell FFX-2 had costumes and that was fun in some ways.

goldwyncq4169d ago

I personally believe that FFXIII's battle system is one of the best in the series. Even normal enemies would wreck you later on if you don't master the battle system's mechanics.

cleft54169d ago

Turn based system was fun but they are moving past it to make their games much more active. At best you can only hope that they have an option to slow down the battle system to be similar to turn based.

FF13 combat system was really well done, once you understand it's not about controlling individual characters but the flow of battle itself. Despite how much action was happening in FF13 it really was a turn based system being masked by frantic action.

For instance, when you fought a tough enemy it was about setting up appropriate paradigm beforehand. This meant one paradigm was your physical attack, another was magic, another blocking, another healing, another boosting character abilities, and another adding status weakness to enemies. The paradigm could be setup in a combination of these listed methods.

The problem with FF13 was that it didn't fully open up until you beat the game and most of the enemies could be beat without much effort up until chapter 10. The combat system was really good, it just took to long to open up.

-Foxtrot4169d ago

@goldwyncq

Yes because mashing the X button and relying on luck the majority of the time without actually putting in much input is such a good system and is so challenging /s

goldwyncq4169d ago

You do know that auto-battle is optional, right? It's not even the first FF game to make use of that feature. Relying entirely on auto-battle is a quick way to getting slaughtered, especially once you reach Gran Pulse. It's the equivalent of button mashing in fighting games. No, mastery of paradigm customization and switching to the right paradigm at the right time is why I consider the battle system to be one of the best in the series.

So contrary to popular belief, FFXIII's not just mash the X button to win, it's a lot more complicated than people give it credit for.

Godmars2904169d ago

@cleft5:
For me FF13's combat system was; cast scan for weaknesses with new enemies, switch from attack to defense/heal when HP low, rinse and repeat. Bosses were only different because special attacks once their HP went to certain levels, and their main issue was the near infinite HP they had. Making fights way long.

No real strategy was involved. Just pre-programmed methods to beat enemies.

-Foxtrot4169d ago (Edited 4169d ago )

@goldwyncq

Was going to counter but I think Godmars290 has said it better.

The only "complicated" thing in FF13 is the awful story

goldwyncq4169d ago

@ Godmars290

And yet we have FFVI where a certain crossbow weapon can pretty much kill every enemy onscreen up to a third of the game. Not knocking on the game, but it's a bit hypocrital to use that kind of argument when almost every game preceding FFXIII used the very same template you mentioned when dealing with normal enemies. No boss battle should take more than 10 minutes if you're using the right strategy. You're probably relying entirely on Auto-battle otherwise.

Not going to argue with the story since it's either a "love it or hate it" kind of thing. It has it's problems, but so does every game in the series.

Godmars2904169d ago

@Foxtrot:
The combat mechanics for Valkyria Chronicles and Resonance of Fate showed that new, dramatic, things could be done with turn based combat, its just that few wanted to explore then. Where more interested in realtime because of the COD crowd.

-Foxtrot4169d ago (Edited 4169d ago )

@Godmars290

I know it's sad...even Lost Odyssey had classic turn based combat but they added the ring system like Squalls gunblade trigger in FF8 to keep you focused in battles.

They can work, they just don't want to do it.

All they need in my opinion is to launch into the battles much quicker, instead of starting up and having a black screen followed by flashes of the scenery drop us straight in it.

Hicken4169d ago

XIII's battle system was not bad at all. Auto-battle didn't work in most instances, let alone all. Having a competent set of Paradigms to switch between was not luck.

If you didn't like it, that's one thing, but that's different from it being bad. Seems like most people have forgotten the difference between the two.

still using multiple accounts to boost your bubbles I see.

acharlez4169d ago

Agreed. Hearing Square actually say it is all the more reassuring.

Soplox4169d ago

We already knew that. It will be based on the Kingdom Hearts Franchise.

HiddenMission4169d ago

Have you not watched the gameplay videos it's very similar to KH's series. Plus Nomura likes that style of play...just look at other titles that he helped create and you'll see that FF15 is an evolution of that style of combat.

Irishguy954169d ago (Edited 4169d ago )

It's been confirmed for YEARS. Somewhere between 2006-2008

This battle system is a 'more realistic' version of Kingdom hearts. In that the characters move like people instead of the way they do iin Kingdom hearts.

It's Kingdom hearts including Tps. Along with that you have the variable abilities of the characters.

Also @ Below

This game is NOT set in 13's universe. That implies that FFXV follows the same rules and backstory as FFXIII. No it doesn't. Not at all. Etro acted in FFXIII. That Etro is not the same Etro as in FFXV. All of the fal cie that lived and died in FFXIII could still be in FFXV and take a different form too, example, Etro is Dead in FFXIII's universe, yet the god is alive in FFXV and is a completely different character, the only relation is that it is still a fal cie and still creates L'cie, it also has a massive connection with the light in the sky that only L'cie can see. L'cie in FFXV are nothing like L'cie in FFXIII either.

Another pointless article which didn't do research on the game to realize the article is pointless. It's been confirmed for years what features this game will have, the battle system, open world etc.

This game has been in development way longer than lightening returns heck it was in development along with FFXIII itself. It was always going to have a different battle system which is why it was originally called FF 'Versus' Xiii. Reason why it's name was changed to FFXV is because SE realized its the best thing to come from them in a long time.

nope1114169d ago

Resembles Kingdom Hearts more, which is a very good thing.

acharlez4169d ago

A VERY good thing indeed. Who needs turn-based battle systems anymore?

Luke_fon_Fabre4164d ago

Nothing's really wrong with turn-based battles. In fact, a lot of FF fans swear by it which is why a lot of them denounced XV right off the bat (which is weird to me because I never play a FF game for the gameplay).

Dark114169d ago

Thank god it will be action-RPG.

LAWSON724169d ago (Edited 4169d ago )

Dont know why it would nomura is behind this title and he usually works on the battle system. I doubt after so much experience he would just copy FF13-3

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Ever play a game a game only to discover at some point it transforms into a horror game? No? Well Netto's Game Room shares six games that do just that!

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom53d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

Relientk7753d ago

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125188d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501187d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne188d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989187d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga187d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989187d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga187d ago (Edited 187d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69188d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid187d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69187d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp188d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion440d ago (Edited 440d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled440d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
