New Offscreen Killzone: Shadow Fall Footage Shows Many Improvements

As far as the PS4 goes, Killzone: Shadow Fall is the game to get.  Luckily for us, an amazing looking game is getting even better.  From recently released off-screen footage of the latest build of Killzone, we can see several graphical improvements.

- All LOD problems have been fixed.  No more pop in!
- They have added moving mist to the level. Looks great
- They have added god rays to the level.  All the trees are casting god rays
* It has screen tearing but the frame rate is solid
* Depth of field is back and they have added object based blur
* Particle effects seem lacking compared to the latest multiplayer footage

The mist in particular looks incredible.

Of course it'll get better, developers are learning new things every day about the hardware. Can't wait to see the endresult on my own TV in a few weeks :O

Ezz20134278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

it just keep looking better and better evey time we see it
this and Deep Down,Infamous SS and of course The Order 1880 are the best looking next gen games

pedrof934278d ago

Check the NPCs at the end.

The colors choose for this game are fantastic.

Eonjay4278d ago

I love towards the end, he says that the build the guy is playing is months old and it isn't even the release build. Can't wait to see it.

Magicite4278d ago

But what about Ryse!? /s

DialgaMarine4278d ago

We really do need to see some gameplay for The Order soon. I'm guessing the VGAs, like what they did with Resistance 3. That's my second most anticipated game after Killzone. I can't wait to see how well RaD does on console hardware.

noctis_lumia4278d ago

the order no doubt so far is the best looking next gen game

and xbox fanboys can hate all they want that wont change a bit

FamilyGuy4278d ago

wtf are "god rays"?

The mist actually does look really good, rolling in all realistic like. Why is the title claiming this to be "the latest build" when the video states otherwise though?

KZSF has looked amazing the entire time, from initial reveal onward, so it's awesome that they somehow able to keep improving on it.

Jazz41084278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

You have a very enthusiastic opinion. Im glad to see people this passionate without knocking others opinions as well. Killzone is shaping up to be a very nice looking game but I would not expect any less from gurilla games on new hardware. Just saw noctis's comment and it felt very insecure when xbox was not brought up and has nothing to do at all with this article or comment.

FamilyGuy4277d ago

Lol, thank Ju

Well yeah, I just call that "lighting", but I agree, the way the light streams through the tree branches and clouds looks exceptional.

All forms of lighting are one of the most noticeable differences between current and next gen games. Textures are a huge deal too but lighting is extremely apparent in how much better it looks.
The sub-surface scattering in skin textures is another thing making all games look better than anything seen from years past even though PC guys keep trying to bring up old Crysis footage from years ago and claim PS4/X1 to be "dated" even though the techniques being used today are being applied and look far better than games of the past, PC included.

thekhurg4277d ago

Screen tearing is going to give me headaches. Exceptionally disappointed that this is still an issue...

badz1494277d ago

even off-screen it looks gorgeous! can't wait!

mewhy324277d ago

This just keeps getting better and better and it runs at 1080p. Not 900p like some 1980's VCR's struggle to pull off.Cough....bone....cough...
These guys are free to take full advantage of the PS4 because they are not subject to the lowest common denominator bone strangle. This is a TRUE exclusive for the mighty PS4 and I've already got it preordered.

Most likely either KZ:SF or WD will be the first PS4 game that I will play ever.

scott1824278d ago

Holy crap this game looks sooooo good. I love the mist, what a great addition. Everything about it makes me horny... er, happy.

trancefreak4278d ago

So they say the particle effects have been scaled down mhh. From where I sit, I saw illuminated particles in a nite settings on KZSF MPlayer which literally would cast more sparks dynamically without day light imposed.

My point is the time of day would have a huge factor when viewing particles between night and daytime set pieces.

GuyThatPlaysGames4278d ago

For this to be the future, these guns sure are inaccurate as hell! lol *waits for a fanboy to defend my comment*

mkis0074278d ago

When I watch these events where they show off games, it almost always seems like the demo guy sucks.

Best looking game on next gen consoles.

ape0074278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

Ryse and Forza 5 look phenomenal too

Eonjay4278d ago

They do look good but this does look better than both. Its really flexing the PS4's hardware muscle.

ape0074278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

^^^^

well i think forza 5 is flexing X1's muscle too with 60 FPS and 1080p as well as ryse having all those character detail 85K polygon, lots of people on screen and no LoD

KZ might look more charming due its great art style while in reality all these 3 games are technical beasts, each in its own way

Sirlancealot4278d ago

Your comment would have gotten an agree from me until you added Forza 5. That looks last gen. The cars look like plastic it doesn't do anything that jumps at you remember, the standard went up this is the next gen last gen techniques for visuals will no longer suffice. Drive club on the other hand does things on a next gen level.

scott1824278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

SF is doing a lot more than those games from a technical persepective and pushing the hardware more. After seeing this new video can that really be argued anymore? Ryse has a lead character at 85k triangles... is that it's grand technical achievement?

I'm not trying to say those aren't great looking games too(Ryse looks especially good), but Killzone does stand ahead from a technical perspective, pretty clearly it would seem now.

garos824278d ago

yadda yadda yadda of topic bubble

DialgaMarine4278d ago

I agree about Ryse, but let's be honest here. Forza 5 does not look very good at all. When GT6, a game running on 7 year hardware, can actually comnpare (and in some ways even look better), then Forza 5 really needs to step it's game up. Killzone, however, annihilates pretty much everything.

OrangePowerz4278d ago

Small correction. Ryse is using LoD, but Crytek decided to give it a different name and call it advanced level of detail.

As for Forza 5, it has issues with AA and pop in while using only pre backed lighting, no day/night change or weather system. That game uses a lot of smoke and mirrors.

TomahawkX4278d ago

I like how PS4 games get upgraded closer to release while XBox1 games get downgraded (Ryse).

DigitalRaptor4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

Man, those trees in particular look much, much better.

However, inFamous: Second Son already looks better than this and that's an open-world game. Let's not mention The Order: 1886... for now at least.

noctis_lumia4278d ago

the order is the best looking game so far

BoNeSaW234278d ago

Have I missed a gameplay video of The Order or something? Or are you claiming that off a CGI trailer?

DigitalAnalog4278d ago

@BoNeSaW23

The latest GI preview said that the "CG" trailer is actually real-time with in-game assets. The developers actually toyed around in with the lighting in that trailer just to show there was no gimmicks whatsoever.

scott1824278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

Besides the footage being in game engine, the devs said they are aiming for higher quality than that.... will be beautiful.

mkis0074278d ago

I didn't believe the trailer was in game until I took a closer look at a section near the end of it. The lighting off the gun on the guy's back shimmers in a non pre-done way. A very small detail but has convinced me that that was indeed running real time.

Shapeshifter754278d ago

KZ: Shadowfall does seem to be getting some fine-tuning (as it should) up until the point it's released into the wild.

Still though, if these pics from Gameinformer for The Order are anything to go by, it's shaping up nicely as well...

http://johnheatz.com/2013/1...

In particular, I like the detail of the last (large) pic near the bottom of the page. The detail of the crest and chain mail on his shoulder/Sleeve and the dust particles in the air really set a nice atmosphere. The light from the lanterns are nice too.

andrewsqual4277d ago

@DigitalAnalog I have to say to everybody who says that, what a compliment to give Ready at Dawn studios. For you to mistake ingame graphics as a CGI trailer means the game will be jaw dropping to you when we see an ingame walkthrough. How lucky for you. :)

Hot damn that looks good. Trying to save up for this, Injustice, and Watch Dogs at launch. Can't wait.

It's almost here!

fpshooter24278d ago

Excellent!! Nice improvements on an already visually stunning title. Cant wait to get my hands on it soon.

iamnsuperman4278d ago

I am just glad there is colour. Colour is so underrated and I hope this is just first in a long line of games that move away from the brown smudge effect (something Killzone has always suffered with)

FlunkinMonkey4278d ago

personally i am hoping for both where appropriate.. some of the gritty, grey war torn landscapes of KZ2 were beautiful, and were entirely fitting for the scenario, while this level and the E3 level presented were beautiful in their own right too.. it would enhance the effectiveness of differing colour palettes as the two contrast each other.

ginsunuva4278d ago

Kz3 had color... Not too much though.

But the greys in Kz2 worked to its advantage. It made the atmosphere so great.

Xsilver4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

@ginsunuva KZ2 had the ISA lost this war atmosphere to be honest lmao. but i think in KZSF when you go on the helgan side of the wall it might look dark and gritty and red lots of red.

DialgaMarine4278d ago

You clearly never played Killzone 3. Honestly, I find the whole color argument for a game like Killzone to be really stupid and annoying. The game is about war on desolate planet. You're not gonna see all the colors of the rainbow there. It's a dark, smoggy, industrial planet; not a pack of skittles.

this look phenomenal, what bugs me is that people are expecting too much too early in nextgen console, just wait, some people are just spoiled, remember how Resistance and CoD 2 looked(excellent at launch btw) compared to later games???

abusador4278d ago

Yes two years from now well be saying wow look at how gd games look now. An open worked dog from now ala dark/demon souls will look phenomenol and any other genre.

ape0074278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

i cannot wait to see Rockstar's New Engine, they said it will be focused on collisions and physics

yummy yumm

Ezz20134278d ago

yep you never judge console power by launch titles
dev's still getting used to the hardware
the next wave of games will look even better
and then ND and SSM show their next game and every one get heart attack

PsylentKiller4278d ago

You don't judge a console by its launch titles but those games are a good indication of where they want to go. Resistance was phenomenal looking and probably the best game in the series. It also had, I believe, 40 player multiplayer which is amazing to this day for consoles. The PS3 went on to produce MAG which had 256 players for multiplayer. The game didn't do well sales wise but you could see that they were trying to introduce a new type of large scale multiplayer. Xbox has had great games but it's focus was always on live and you could see the direction they wanted to move in from the introduction of the blades UI. Halo was the horse they chose to demonstrate their vision of the online multiplayer experience.
Now, with the launch titles of this new generation we can see that MS is moving towards a more cinematic approach to their games as well as a focus on the social aspects of gaming. Sony May seem like they are focusing on social networking but that it is only to showcase and share their games. For the games, Sony is aiming for more engrossing interactive gameplay. This is seen in the addition of the touchpad on the controller and the light bar. While the a eye is sold separately the experience between the player and the movement on screen is near 1:1. The PS4 games seem to want to tell the story through the gameplay and not just the cutscenes. MS wants this as well but I think Sony, most of the time, is better at it.

ZBlacktt4278d ago

Yep, then by 2008 we had MGS4 which is still talked about to this day. Then 2009 we had Uncharted 2.

Magicite4278d ago

was it 2008? Holy shi#, time runs fast!

ILive4278d ago

Uncharted 2 still stands---well, in my opinion, as one of the best looking games this gen. It still looks better than some triple A title released later this gen.

Ezz20134278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

yep 2008 was the year ps3 start to show it power
and since then the train never stopped
even when next gen consoles is about to launch
they give ps3 owners a GEM (the last of us) 95% metascore that already GOTY/GOTG for most gamers

your comment get a "well said" bubble

Salooh4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

True. However , we don't feel the big leap this time. it's different situation then before so i don't blame these people for being disappointed. Killzone doesn't make me excited like when killzone 2 revealed , but the leap is still there , I'm still buying shadow fall though ^^ .

I still feel excited when i look at killzone 2 videos >.< . It seems that the art style is what i like. so i hope when they make another killzone they make it more darker , more serious. I can imagine it :P .
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

abusador4278d ago

Its different for me, I def. see the big leap in games like Kz, Infamous, Deep Down, Witcher 3 , etc CCC

If anything launch games now look extremely better and a bigger leap from what I remember in other lauches . I'm talking about launch games comparative with games at that time and launch games cimparitive with current gen games during this time.

Videos from Witcher 3, Kz Sf, etc... Look insane.

Destrania4278d ago

The Killzone 2 section when they were launching into the field from the sky towers on those dropships, going through the clouds and getting shot at by the lightning arc guns blew my mind back in the day. Intense and amazing scene. I hope Killzone SF has some of 'those' moments, and believe it will.

ILive4278d ago

I agree as well, I see the leap. I think what you have to realize is that you have to see the games in motion in order to truly see the leap. Videos do not do some of these games justice.

Ju4278d ago

I don't know. Maybe you are looking at the wrong footage. This still gives me a chill:

So very true; I thought the first gears was impossible to surpass the first time I saw it. I was a total playstation fan-boy at the time, so I of course tried to downplay it. But man looking back at what we have accomplished since then; God of war3 and ascension, uncharted 2 and 3, the last of us and now beyond. I can't even bring myself to play heavenly sword anymore; the frame rate is disturbing.

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT243d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus242d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius242d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro250d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken250d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown250d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72250d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken250d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya249d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast250d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer593d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138593d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga592d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

592d ago
Notellin592d ago (Edited 592d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem593d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos592d ago (Edited 592d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor592d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies592d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim592d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese592d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic592d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld592d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie592d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77593d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231592d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein593d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.
