GC - "Microsoft has revealed in very fine print that only 5 countries will be having Kinect voice commands when the console comes out later this year."

No Spain or Italy? that is odd

or Ireland or Australia (you know who speak English as well)

(Edit if this is an accent thing I would be worried for those people who are from North Wales, Scotland and some Northern places as they can have quite thick accents. Hell even I don't understand them sometimes)

HolyDuck3910d ago

Part of Ireland is in the UK.

So, it'll probably work in the whole of Ireland.

iamnsuperman3910d ago

You would think but bare in mind Ireland is a separate country. Don't lump Ireland in with the UK because the UK has Northern Ireland in it. I assume if you change the store to a UK store it will work

gaelic_laoch3910d ago

Have you not been to Cork BOYO!

malokevi3910d ago

Well... that must be really disappointing for some language groups.

Thank the devil that I speak common.

Gazondaily3910d ago

It's still pretty lame though.

This reminds of the video on Youtube of a Scotsman trying to use Siri.

christian hour3910d ago

So I just imagined bertie Ahern trying to use the voice commands on xbox one... pissing myself.

It sounds (no pun intended) like MS is rushing the One to be part of the Xmas battle

Even when Kinect 1 came out you couldn't use voice commands in Ireland for at least the first year.

This could be rectified by changing your locale to UK... I think eventually they enabled it but I didn't use my kinect much after the novelty wore off.

I'm surprised after all this time they still haven't gotten their act together on this. For something they deem essential to the experience of the console, I would assume this was something they would have sorted out long before launch. I guess they spent a little too much time on TV, Sports and DRM and making sure their camera met NSA standards :P

Sure they've gone back on all of that now, but it doesn't change the fact that they simply do not give two shits about their consumers enjoyment, just their wallets.

@HolyDuck you'd think that, but its not the case at all. Considering they touted the original Kinect as the future of gaming, they didn't really put a lot of work in to it, and it seems to be the same with Kinect 2.0

@iamnsuperman I figured it was an accent thing too, but worked for people in scotland, northern ireland and wales, also worked for any irish person be they from the most rural parts of cork or a council estate in Dublin once they changed locale to uk.

I honestly can't understand their reasoning for blocking out other english speaking countries like that.

HammadTheBeast3910d ago

According to them, "Kinect is Xbox One".

Therefore, technically, Xbox only works in 5 countries at launch.

@mcstorm Hello Computer... ... Hello, Computer... HELLO! HELLO! HELLO!

PSVita3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

I don't understand how they don't have the language library together already. i mean didnt those places missing out now have the original kinect with the correct languages?

Also they've stressed the fact that "kinect is the Xbox one" yet 2 months from launch they still aren't prepared for the know language differences.

MysticStrummer3910d ago

It was clear soon after the reveal that the One would be very NA focused, at least at first. The euros were recently thrown a bone with the FIFA deal, but the One will still be very NA-centric even after everyone gets voice commands.

avengers19783910d ago

All I can say to this is WTF! MS you gotta be kidding with this, first you reduce the number of countries your launching in then reduce the features down even further... Why not just release in NA and the UK it's obvious those are the only places you care about

Deadpoolio3910d ago

Because no matter what Major Microsoft claims YES they are having problems with the One80.....It's even more obvious IF you believe their story that they got their FCC cert before Sony did and have been in production longer....

Using Major Microsoft's logic or lie of MS having no issues with the One80...That makes no sens then, they have been making consoles longer than Sony, but had to slash 21 launch countries down to 13 and instead of shipping 7 million at launch now it's 6 million....

Yet Sony who again using Major Microsoft logic have been producing consoles for less time than them are shipping 16 million at launch, to 32 countries.....I smell RROD 2.0 coming

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

They use this as one of their main selling points and then sell it without it?

For a super rich corporation they should be doing more than sony lol

SilentNegotiator3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

So they claimed that they delayed it in some regions because of voice commands....and now we find out that not all of the regions getting Xbone right away even have it??!?

http://www.ign.com/articles...

Deadpoolio3910d ago

Thats because the reality of the situation is that Major Microsoft and the PR gang are LIARS.....Chances are that YES they are having production problems, with any combination of the 3 issues the eSRAM frying the GPU, the Disc drive malfunctioning and the Kinect chips.....

I mean obviously they are not going to come out and admit it, BUT when you claim you got your FCC cert before Sony and have been in production longer yet you cut your launch shipment from 7 to 6 million and launch countries from 21 to 13, YOU ARE HAVING A PRODUCTION ISSUE....

They were probably better off not responding to the production issues and or the FCC cert. Especially when you just confirm that your having issues

slimeybrainboy3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

Sooooo. MS say they delayed launch to localise yet it's only localised in 5 countries of the 13? How does that make sense?

If theres no supply issues why not just sell the consoles in the 21 countries you announced? Roll out Kinect later, so many european countries have the same or share multiple languages! Obviously dialect and accents can vary, but they either wont buy it untill its localised or will just not use Kinect.

Am I just being a paranoid MS hater, or does this smell like lies again?

Darrius Cole3910d ago

It's not you.

Either Microsoft is having manufacturing issues, or Microsoft underestimated how difficult it is to get its voice recognition software to work in every country in the world.

Now I can not imagine how anyone could possible underestimate something like that. There are A LOT of languages in the world and each language will have multiple regional dialects. How any adult could think that is anything but a gi-normous task is beyond me.

SilentNegotiator3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

@cole

Yeah, it must be tough for them to do what they already did with the Kinect 1 for a small handful of regions. How were we to expect them to do that in several months with all of that ground work already completed?

/s

Darrius Cole3910d ago

Microsoft wouldn't be rushing their console release would they? Only releasing in 13 countries, Kinect only working in less than half of those countries, and half the countries with a working Kinect being English-speaking all sound like a system that needs more work to me.

If I didn't know any better, I would say that Sony caught Microsoft off-guard by announcing that they would release the PS4 this year and Microsoft has been rushing trying to prevent the PS4 from getting the first-mover advantage.

They are charging a $100 for something that doesn't work right now and that most people won't use even if it did work.

Deadpoolio3910d ago

Well MS cut their launch from 21 to 13 and then on top of that cut the launch shipment from 7 to 6 million...Yet Sony is launching in 32 countries and are pushing to ship 16 million consoles....

That to me tells me that yep they are having production issues, Major Microsoft practically confirmed it when he had to mention they supposedly got their FCC certification before Sony and "have been in production longer"

Anon19743910d ago

So wait...am I missing something here? Microsoft just finished telling us that the reason they were delaying the console in so many countries was because of the time it took to localize the voice controls. Now we find out they can ship anyway without voice controls and probably just update later.

Doesn't that rather blow their localization excuse for delaying the Xbox One out the window?

+ Show (7) more repliesLast reply 3910d ago
Kayant3910d ago

Well that puts the localization statement out of the window because it's not even supported in all countries being launched.

Roper3163910d ago

Does MS ever actually speak the truth? There is always some kind of spin or catch with everything they do or say imho.

Narutone663910d ago

MS:XB1 already passed FCC. (Actually, the controller is the one which passed the FCC).

PSVita3910d ago

Just curious, do you have a link naruto?

Deividas3910d ago

I dont think anyone believed that statement anyways, even without this.

Caffo013910d ago

LOL that's hilarious, MS is rushing like they did with 360!!

Belking3910d ago

lol..yea right. What hilarious is that they don't have o rush. They got this in the bag.

Deividas3910d ago

Your statement actually is hilarious!

Caffo013910d ago

where have you been these last months? even MS knows they're screwed..

MysticStrummer3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

"They got this in the bag"

How so? Even with all the 180s PS4 is still showing better preorder numbers, even in north america. I don't think MS has NA in the bag, much less the world.

bsquwhere3910d ago

Yeah the bag you bought it in, so can return it when kinect fails to understand what your saying.

neocores3910d ago

All i have to say is if you not ready. DONT RELEASE AT ALL ITS THAT SIMPLE.

Salooh3910d ago

Y button only available to 6 countries.

KYU21303910d ago

so releasing in fewer regions and now even fewer countries will be able to take advantage of all those hyped features. Thats a bit disturbing in my opinion.

Neocores, if they did that it would almost be like admitting defeat. This early in the game and as much problems as they have had holding out could be a really big problem for them.

Stop buying the fucking game! It is no secret that the game is based around opening packs that need to be bought with real money if you want to be competitive. Yes I know, you have the chance to get the cards without investing real money, but that is a real grind and you still may never get the cards you want. This is not new and it will not change if people keep buying the game/packs.

Why Xbox believes it must cut costs and close studios

Companies, particularly public companies like Microsoft, need to grow.

gold_drake8h ago

i mean its pretty simple, they spent close to 30 billion in acquiring activision, they thought they'd make it bk no problem, and that didnt happen.

its just shit that because of MS's miscalculation alot of people lost their jobs.

Jingsing5h ago

This is exactly what many people said would happen including the CMA and FTC. Lies lies and more lies and they allowed a $69 billion buy out to happen.

gold_drake5h ago

oh yeh it was 70 billion. that was my bad haha even worse.

thesoftware7305h ago(Edited 4h ago)

gold,

You can't be serious, right?

Do you think that MS thought they would make 80bill in a year & Half? They haven't even released titles under MS yet, lol.

But in fact, that A/B revenue is already paying off, look at the last earnings call. That $80 billion is long-term money, my guy, no sane person/company would think they would make that back in any short-term situation, it's a long-term investment.

Let's play silly then. If MS's reason for laying off staff and closing studios was due(which it really was not) to the A/B deal, tell me what Sony's reason was for past studio closures, the recent 900-person layoffs, closing Sony London, shutting down Dreams, and closing Japan Studio? Zipper? Psygnosis? cuts at all their internal studios.

Keep in mind, you are claiming MS's reason is because of the A/B deal; please explain Sony's reason.

Hofstaderman4h ago

You actually still defending them? Sheesh.....

gold_drake4h ago

this is not a sony vs MS debate. dont make it something it isnt.

and of course not, but im pretty sure they thought they'd make more money after the deal. they didnt, and closed off some studios.

its pretty insane to think there is any other reason for the closure of studios in this case.

romulus234h ago(Edited 4h ago)

(It really was) due to the Activision Blizzard deal and the loss of physical sales due to gamepass. You keep bringing up Sony in all your posts about this, stop deflecting and trying to change the topic, this is about MS and what they are doing.

BehindTheRows4h ago

Has nothing to do with Sony. Stay on topic.

notachance4h ago

once in a while you see someone too invested in their make-believe console war that everything happened has to be connected to said war…

a bit of banter between fans is normal, this crusade you’re doing now isn’t.

Chevalier3h ago

Wow idiotic. You bring up very old closures not that there haven't been recent ones from Playstations, but, seriously stop deflecting. This has NOTHING to do with Playstation.

Does Playstation got $3 trillion behind them and daddies wallet? No they don't so stop making a fool of yourself.

Xbox has never been profitable really and they just keep losing money so between their worst hardware sales, terrible 3rd party sales and now terrible 1st party sales.

Gamepass numbers that are no longer being announced shows their numbers after 3 years of missed targets has flatlined. Plus their recent gains up to 34 million were ONLY because they folded Gold members in too. Absolutely take your idiotic rhetoric out of here. Keep on topic without deflecting.

Drake,

"this is not a sony vs MS debate. dont make it something it isnt."

You are correct that it's not an MS Vs Sony Topic, but when exaggeration and imagination mix from a one-sided social group, similar examples are needed to ground radical thoughts; in this instance, the example was that shutting down 3,4,5, even 6 studios during a restructure/ buyout/acquisition is not some anomaly(it can suck) that has to be dissected or spell doom and gloom.

"But I'm pretty sure they thought they'd make more money after the deal. They didn't, and they closed off some studios."

But they did make more money, a lot, actually; the last earnings call showed a huge growth in profit, almost all due to A/B revenue.

"its pretty insane to think there is any other reason for the closure of studios in this case."

The fact that they did make money, kinda throws this out the window, and besides, you don't wake up and say, hey let's close a studio, you look at the output, you look at the dev as a whole, the long term and short term, you weigh it against all other studios and goals, you keep key members, ect..then you close if they are the weakest links...which by MS analysis they were.

Again, I will make a small Sony comparison, just so some of you can understand and see past the bias; Insomniac, ND, and Bungie have made some of the best games ever created, yet Sony saw fit to cut jobs in every of these studios, even tho Insomniac & ND are the biggest producers of PS games, leagues ahead better than Tango and Arkane, yet, they saw cuts, mind you, while being the TOP produces of PS first party. They were told to cut costs, and more jobs may be on the line, and Bungie is being threatened by a hostile Sony takeover. Put that in perspective, as I know that layoffs and dev closures are different, but if the best of the best is getting cut off, it is less than surprising, that lesser studios are closing.

@Cheva,
My response fits well with your comments as well. You even went on to prove that the dev closures are not just due to A/B acquisition. Then you point out Sony has less money than MS, inferring that MS should keep devs open that they see as lesser earners, while Sony having less money makes it okay to close them. lol...it doesn't work that way.

gold_drake2h ago

im not reading all of that. u have ur opinion, i have mine.

thats rly it.

but this aint sony vs ms.

ApocalypseShadow1h ago

You're trying to compare a 100 billion company to a company that has 3 TRILLION worth. SIE has to live or die on their own. And in turn, PlayStation has helped the main company again and again. Sony has to balance out what is working and not working in the company.

While Xbox has Daddy Warbucks footing the bill to keep the platform afloat. They have been bleeding money from Nvidia hardware in the OG Xbox, the RROD fiasco, the attempted 2013 DRM nonsense and the lies about being the most powerful console in the world and the losses of paying out millions to prop up a service hoping it catches on with enough subscribers to justify its existence.

They're not comparable if Xbox isn't allowed to live or die by its actions. It's subsidized. Revenue isn't profit. And if they were profiting on their own, they wouldn't be closing developers. If they were profiting, they wouldn't need Daddy Warbucks spending 80 to 100 billion buying up 3rd party publishers to sustain a loss leading platform.

They stopped announcing game sales, stopped announcing hardware sales, stopped announcing game pass subscribers, they are putting games on their competitors platforms but you're telling us that they are doing great even after killing jobs and closing developers at Xbox.

Stop drinking the Kool aid. You're drunk.

anast5h ago

They are going to use AI for a large portion of the game development process. Upper management need bonuses and the shareholders need more money. So, people will lose their jobs.

Skuletor5h ago

Maybe they were already using AI to make business decisions, which would explain why they closed Hi-Fi Rush's studio, then said they need more games like Hi-Fi Rush not long after that announcement.

Crows904h ago(Edited 4h ago)

They shouldn't have bought any studios. Some is okay...but they went on a shopping spree...stupid

Einhander19724h ago

The better question is why did Microsoft buy publishers for a service they were subsidizing they knew couldn't support.

And why are so many websites trying to make people feel sorry for Microsoft instead of truly criticizing the fact they are closing studios and killing jobs that would have been fine if Microsoft themselves hadn't gotten involved.

Quit feeling sorry for Microsoft and start feeling sorry for the industry and the all the gamers who are actually losing out.

THIS IS MICROSOFTS FAULT.

RNTody3h ago

The first thing that happens after any major acquisition or merger is a consolidation of the whole new portfolio, which includes cutting any excess, bloat or portfolios that don't fit the larger MO of the big boy. So far, it's been par for the course with Microsoft and that's why gamers have been so against this acquisition. Tango Gameworks is the beginning. You think Microsoft wants to pay to keep small timers like Ninja Theory in business?

There is absolutely zero evidence to suggest that Microsoft will improve any of these studios, but plenty to suggest that they will get rid of what they don't need and hold onto the IP. The real agenda of the acquisition was always to acquire The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Fallout, Call of Duty, Candy Crush etc. that will create millions in passive revenue stream for Microsoft regardless of where the games release. Microsoft simply wants their cut.

Because of Games Pass Microsoft has no interest in investing in new IP which is risky and requires creative talent they can neither nurture nor manage. Game Pass has also not grown in the way Microsoft expected it to, even post acquisitions. Therefore the logical thing to do, without serious money makers to release, is to cut as much cost as possible.
