Top 5 Most Overrated Games This Generation

Games come and go, and they’re usually remembered for the good (and not so good) qualities they offer. As such, sometimes games are remembered for being too good, with gamers forgetting all the negative aspects of them. This is a list of the 5 most overrated titles from this gen, and why gamers might be forgetting the flaws in the first place. In the end, these are good games, but maybe not as good as they’re made out to be.

This guy think that Uncharted is suppose to be realistic, when it's not (to a degree at least). Chapter 19 of Drake's Fortune was the scariest part for obvios reasons. It was unexpected and it really did add to the whole plot.

It was expected in the next two games, but one thing I was disappointed with 3 was how they were handled in comparison. They ditched the super natural thing and just went with full on hallucination. Not a huge problem TBH, but I felt that the enemies lacked that special feel to them.

Either way, to say that the game is overrated because of the platforming (which works perfect unless you suck, and the puzzles (um sorry this is a treasure hunting game, puzzles are needed). Man.

With Resistance:

I loved the first game and the third game, the second game really killed it though with the change of direction. There's a reason why the first one was great and that's because it pushed the fatc that you really were going extinct. The atmosphere was spot on to. With the multiplayer, I have to say it's one of the bets ones out there, which saldy 2 and 3 did not follow. I wished many games followed it, and there's a reason why it got so much correct.
Before the PS3 had in-game XMB, Resistance was that bridge to connect with friends online. It had a messaging system, and in-game friends list, and a fully functional clan system that tons of modern games lack now. In fact I have to say it was one of the better games out with utilizing the clan and party system correctly.
Plus lets take into affect that these games aren't even scored that high. It's average 7-8.

Portal:

Gonna argue that the first game didn't have multiplayer really? That doesn't make it overrated at all -_-
TBH I enjoyed the lack of consistent, even Portal 2 is like that and there's good reason why. If you can't see that then wow. This whole time you're being hunted, I personally felt it added to the story every time you came to a easy puzzle, Glados would always act like you accomplished something big and then diss you about it saying how easy it was meant to be.

Gears of War:

Never played all of them, but I did enjoy the first one.

Mass Effect -
Once again I don't see how it's overrated. It has flaws I will admit that which comes to the next point.

This article is trying to point out that flaws = overrated. Every game out there has flaws. The lack of a component doesn't make it a bad game at all.

I am surprised Skyrim didn't make this list though. Bugs aside, look at the story of that game. It was praised for having such a high story, an di know the bosses dragon's AI sucked balls, but Alduin was suppose to be the ultimate baddy, when the only bad thing we see him do is attack that village at the start of the game. They really didn't make the villain a villain enough to care about him. Skyrim had gameplay and the world going for it, but the stories could have been more compelling.

All the series they quoted are great series and each has one weak episode which is forgettable when i see the quality level other episodes have accomplished! Uncharted series for example will always be remembered as a major IP and i dont see it as overrated as a COD or FIFA where 10+ millions are sold and the games are just average.

I don't think the author understands the meaning of overrated. Here's my list:

1. GTA IV

Way too highly rated for what is quite an average game IMO.

2. Halo 3

Good, but nowhere near as good as people made out. When I played this game, I actually thought Resistance 1 was way better in graphics and gameplay, but I preferred the story and voice acting in Halo.

3. COD

Modern Warfare was good, since then it's been more of the same.

4. Fable 3

Typical Molyneux over promising.

5. Assassins Creed 3

I just can't believe how boring this game was. I had to force myself to finish the main story, whereas with previous games I at least tried to platinum them

Resistance is an okay game, but not really overrated since not many people overhype it. I would have put Killzone in place of it.

Portal is one of the best games of this generation.

Uncharted though...He is spot on on that one. Far and away the most overrated franchise of this generation. I have no idea what people see in it except that it's a super easy, linear game with a cliche story and characters that are easy to comprehend...basically it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

I don't usually disagree with everything a person says, but the writer of this opinion piece seems to trigger one of the the rarest occurances that I completely think the "direct opposite" of what's been said about a subject.

I don't even know what game would please a person who thinks that some of the most industry shaking titles are overrated. Those games are praised for a reason, and sales numbers don't usually lie.

For me the GTA games are over rated as well as other games I could not get into but that is why we have a choice in games.

Uncharted 3 was well rated, but not as well rated as Uncharted 2, which is a good thing. Story wise, set pieces, characters, I felt Uncharted 2 did a far better job than uncharted 3. But in terms of game design, animations, art style, uncharted 3 was better. I did enjoy uncharted 2 more (heck I've completed uncharted 3 only 3 times compared to 7 for uncharted 2) but I wouldn't call uncharted 3 overrated. It's a game which deserves it 90+ ratings.

Gears of Brown is definitely overrated. It's the exact type of game that Doesn't need to be made, yet keeps getting pumped out every couple years.

I've played it and it was alright for 10-20 minutes of multiplayer or survival or whatever then it just got boring.

I can see the appeal but the people it seems to appeal to people who are narrow minded and only like brown FPS games with generic ugly aliens or whatever.

Game has a few nice ideas but it's beyond overrated.

U3 while not as well rounded and ground breaking compared to U2 is not overrated. It got the well deserved accolade and is better than U2 in terms of single player graphics, technical advances of the Naughty Dog Engine.

I compare the situation to Megaman 2 and Megaman 3. Both are great and none was overrated.

For me, 3 was my favorite with the first one barely behind it. I didn't enjoy 2 & had to force myself to finish it. I'll never play 2 again. Way too much emphesis on platforming & too over the top. I know Uncharted is over the top but 2 just seemed heavy handed with it. 1 & 3 were awesome though.

I agree U3 was a bit overrated; It looked stunning, and wasn't as good as U2, but I also think it wasn't as good as U1. Also, some "bad things" about the series that they didn't bother to change only got more annoying with time (namely, the neverending flow of enemies; I wouldn't be surprised if there was more killing in uncharted than in gears...). And the whole thing with "omg you're reckless someone is gonna die, let's all look at sully" followed by the "fake death" in the end, was bad narrative imo.

Still, really great game, with some incredible levels, but I wouldn't rate it above U1, so in that sense, it is overrated.

the only one I agree with on this list is the Resistance series. Two was pretty fun, but I disliked the first because of the univentive level design, character development and overall cliche and unspired story.
Uncharted is damned amazing, as is portal, Gears of War (I bet the author never played the game online. I swear it was addicting as hell. I had no issue with the control scheme, and I loved that one button did so many things. It has the most functional cover system I've seen.)

Every game talked about here is stupendous. High quality stuff (with the exception of the Resistance series, sorry Insomniac, stick with your awesome ratchet and clank series.)

No part 2 was the worst of the series, i loved the horror atmosphere in part 1. The grim setting was perfect.

Disagree with basically everything you said about r1. I absolutely loved the coop missions in part 2, one of the few times a have geninuely disappointed they didn't have more dlc available. (coop maps)

I love rachet and clank, but insomniac should have left it's color scheme out of r2.

3 was real good, except no coop missions. :(

I really don't think anyone puts rfom on the same lvl as uncharted, killzone ect. I didn't see anything in the rfom series that wasn't high quality regardless if it appeals to me or not.

I have seen a hell of alot worse from 3rd party games.

... While none of the games are bad by any means, I just wasn't as impressed by them as most other gamers seem to be.

I haven't played Resistence, so I can't comment on that, but I thought Gears of War was quite boring, gameplay-wise, and the same goes for Uncharted (ducks for cover). I guess I'm just not a big fan of cover-shooters.

Portal was good, but I somehow just didn't love it.

Mass Effect kinda lost me, cause I'm bad with names, so whenever I stopped playing for a bit, I just had no clue as to what I was supposed to do, who was who, and where I was supposed to go. Mass Effect 2 is better.

Halo 3 is the overrated one. With outdated (for the time) character models, so-so set pieces, and an unsatisfying end to the war with the Covenant, it really was disappointing. Haven't played Halo 4, but I can say for sure that Halo 3 was an overrated bag that probably, much like Halo 2, only stood out because of its multiplayer.

This article lost all credibility from that sentence alone, the term "Halo Killer" is a lame, old, dated term created by the western game media to label any major FPS NOT exclusive on Xbox as direct competitor to Halo.

The series never set out to be a "Halo Killer" It set out to be a solid FPS with a great online and campaign and it succeeded in that. I don't remember anyone labeling Resistance as a game better than Halo, because outside of the core genre and aliens, the two games have almost NOTHING in common and play completely differently, fail article.

I believe UC2 became popular because of how engaging it was. With that though comes a chance that it may be disengaging to others. For me though, it felt like I was playing my favorite action thriller TV/Movie for a little more than 10 hours of gameplay. To be honest, that experience is a little underrated.

I cant help but think Halo 4 and Reach deserves a place on this list.

They were massive disappointments compared to what I believe was the most complete gaming experience available this gen, Halo 3. Incredible multi-player, captivating sandbox campaign, intuitive forge mode, introduced us to theater mode, it still gives you so many more customization options in comparison to all other console base games. Ridiculously, Halo 3 actually gave you a lot more to customize that later iterations of the franchise.

Since how is Nate unlikable? He's probably one of the most likable and memorable protagonists this generation. Plus I don't agree with some of the other games either, but the uncharted one stood out the most. A man's favorite shooter of all time is Resistance 3 because it was nothing like Halo and COD. No weapon limit, no regenerating health, and the most creative weapons this side of Ratchet and Clank. Upgrading weapons added yet another layer of awesome on top of a story that felt more adult than those 2 games and had some actual pacing (slow moments to accentuate the fast paced ones). That mine level was positively the most creepy thing a man has played in an FPS since HL2's Raven Home. Resistance 2 had a disappointing story but the co-op MP was amazing and completely different (WoW mixed with FPS was very awesome). A man doesn't play online competitive much but SP was top notch in 2 out of 3 and 2 had the co-op to make up for it.

A man also had great fun with Gears as with Uncharted those 2 don't need defended though.

A man is flabergasted that COD isn't on this list. Also a man would put Minecraft on the list as it is simply an engine that was made by a dev that didn't give a crap that luckily had fans do everything for them.

Even if you didn't like the content in Skyrim at least the developer put it in there (at least what a man played on PS3 when he platinumed it). A man can't fault them because they have given him 100 hours of entertainment. A man can't give Minecraft's creator any credit because he made a horrible looking game with a simple block building mechanic and people say it's the best game ever. Call a man uncreative but he has seen far better games with level editors (LBP for example).

So Portal, a game that I consider to have the best writing in video game history (or Portal 2, haha) that came as a bundle in The Orange Box is overrated? And one of the reasons is because its only 5 hours? Valve threw in Portal just for giggles to see if people would like it, it was literally just an experimental game by a small subset of the company.

Regardless, I believe when most people think about the most overrated games they tend to target games that are still great - or maybe just very good - when to me overrated games are those that are just good that are considered much better. It's all subjective don't get me wrong,but Uncharted is a great series.

Now, the most UNDERRATED games are more interesting. My vote for this gen: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

If you are talking about Enslaved, then for what it's worth I think the story is fantastic, including the ending which is the exact opposite of a cliffhanger/sequel bait. I'll be honest, the combat is sluggish and not great (though there's not a ton of fighting overall) and the game is a little glitchy, with the only consistent problem being low framerate.

But between the beautiful setting, engaging but realistic characters and interesting take on a post apocalyptic setting, I'd highly recommend it considering you could probably get it for $15.

I have to agree on Uncharted being overrated in general . Its a good series but not where near as good as the rep it gets. yeah it looks great and it does have good scripting and acting but then its full of QTE , pretty uninspired puzzles ,climbing setions that are interactive cut scenes at best and shooting mechanics that are frustrating at times

Well I agree with this lost except for Uncharted. Part 3 wasnt that great IMO, but Uncharted 2 is easily one of the absolute best video game experiences I have ever witnessed. Ive got a favorites list that includes the likes of Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, Zelda Ocarina of time, and stuff like that. All older classics. But Uncharted is one of the few series this gen that is comparble to those classic games from the past. Its in the same pedigree. I guarantee I will be able to pick up Uncharted 2 10 years from now and be able to enjoy it still.

I agree with the rest of the list though. Throw Telltale's The Walking Dead on there too please! That is THE MOST overrated game I have ever experienced. Sure the story elements and suspense was great, but the gameplay was disguting and it was riddled with bugs. What happened to gameplay first? I had more fun watching my wife in her playthrough. If the best part of your game involves watching your wife's reaction to the circumstances, theres a problem. She even though the games controls were broken or unfinished. If a non-gamer thinks your game is broken... it is.

I've actually never heard anyone call it a "halo killer". And to say its a cross between COD and Halo is overly simplistic and ignoring a lot of the game is. I agree the second Resistance was overrated as they tried to make it COD like and I hated that.

except it wasn't just that, it had quite a personal side to it, all 3 of them.

Mass Effect- I kind of agree but its still a great series, the first game's combat sucked and it improved in the other two but by sacrificing the RPG mechanics a bit. The story is what matters and the decisions may not have had a real impact in the end but they did play out some great scenes and in the third game the other stories conclusions(not the actual ending) were quite satisfying.

Except you could change it to use normal controls, so not forced. The story was mostly great in all 3 games, quite blockbuster action oriented with great acting and good dialogue. The combat was the weakest part of the game ranging from decent at its worst and good at its best. The puzzles were anything but simple while not being complicated, a delicate line.

Overrated? Not even close.
