It is very impressive... interesting to see how many people are just getting into this generation, buying a 2nd XBOX or getting an alternate console to game on. Whichever console people bought, they will have a deep library of titles to play. Even Wii U will have a deep library if you include all the Wii, WiiWare and Virtual Console titles.

I would like to see how many households added the Xbox. I know it's only anecdotal but everytime I hear someone getting one this late in the cycle its a replacement. Which is undetstandable since they are tied to the system with game libraries and friends.

Well, contextually, yes - the 360 sold the most consoles on Black Friday.

But saying there's a big win to be had on that particular day is like arguing the final shot in a war matters if no one gets hit by it. Sales of IPs and preparation for next-generation technology are already supremely important, and we'll only get the full picture of how important Black Friday was this year months from now.

It would have been more interesting say Nintendo had an unlimited supply of Wii U's available for purchase. But regardless, Microsoft made out like bandits for sure.

It wouldn't have made a big difference. Wii U's are still sitting on store shelves in my area and a quick search on the web shows they're plentiful at other locales. I think that a 3 month earlier launch would've helped. You'd be surprised how many people still aren't aware that Nintendo just launched a new console....

yeah, in my area it's the complete opposite. They are pretty hard to find. If you are willing to settle for a basic model then yes, you can find them. But the Deluxe is a ghost around me.

My big take away from the holiday / black friday sales was the industry had a relatively "healthy" hardware month for the first time in about 10+ months.

I think a lot of it had to do with the heavy promotion they did with halo 4; it was just all over the place, that along with windows 8 and it was hard for people to pass up. By contrast the only ps3 promotion i kept seeing was for assassins 3 which wasn't an exclusive unless u count the vita version (which didn't really help much)...

as for nintendo, i am now just seeing a slightly different commercial for the wiiU but it looks more of a dancing game than the release of a new console (probably cause most of the people in it are using wiimotes). They're simply not as creative as they used to be when it comes to advertising. I'm curious to see how the big 3 will approach the holidays.

This is the same thing that happens every year. The PS3 outsells the 360 by small amounts for most of the year, building up a moderate yearly lead, then the holiday season comes and the 360 totally wipes the floor with the PS3 and completely undoes the PS3's lead. By the time the year ends, both consoles have sold about the same for the year so the 2-3 million gap never closes.

I like how these analyst forget about "Cyber Monday" that takes place around the world on the internet. The truth will be revealed mid January for Microsoft and early February for Sony.

Ps. That is not a typo people those sales are from September 30th and here's another link backing up the claim. Neogaf had this same debate on whether it was from November or September. And what? And the PS3 continues it's lead? Is that what you were going to say? Because to say the PS3 sells great all year and then loses all their gains to the 360 is a lie, plain and simple. If that was the case, how the hell did the PS3 erase the almost 9 million lead the 360 had after that first Christmas season they were both on the market to move into second place this gen (70 million 360's to 70.2 million PS3's at last count)?

For the first 3 quarters of 2012, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 by almost 2 to 1 (4.2 million 360's to 8.2 million PS3's) The idea that that would simply be erased during the last quarter of the year is just ridiculous.

And to the guy above saying Sony didn't cross 70 million until Nov, check Sony's financials. Q2, ending Sept 30 showed 3.5 million PS3's sold which brings the total to 70.2 million.

It amazes me that even though the 360's lead has been completely erased, we still have those insisting that somehow the 360 sells better overall. What possible reason could you have for telling yourself that in the face of the facts?

The 360 is a great console. It sells well in the US. The PS3 is also a great console. It doesn't sell as well in the US, but it sells better outside of the US. You wouldn't think that these simple statements would be such a point of contention and yet here we are, late into this gen and people are still fighting over sales figures, trying to spin them into something they're not. These console wars are absolutely ridiculous.

Microsoft sold 960,000 last year during the week of black Friday. They only sold 750,000 this year even with a $99.99 SKU. PS3 actually performed better than last year in the US @ $249.99(the only home console to see YOY gains). Given all it's fumbles, doom articles, (stolen key) hack, and high price point, the ps3 managed to overcome a competitor who at one point had the entire next gen market to themselves. The Wii managed to do it because of it's price point and peripherals. Sony has managed to do it by becoming humble and focusing on 1st party/indie games. To overcome those odds only prove as a testament to the "Playstation" brand and how, if done correctly, Sony can obtain their former glory.

Side note: Just to put it into perspective, as of September 30th 2012 xbox360 has sold 70 million worldwide, 40 million of those being in the USA. Failing at the "Divide and conquer" Microsoft hopes lie in a market where their system has reach saturation (black Friday sales - 22%). I hope you're right and Microsoft shocks us, but if not, that temporary lead might start becoming a little more permanent.

Define tiny. Black ops 2 ps3 versions freezes ps3's freezes the game. Graphics on 360 are better. DLC comes first(dont care about graphics and DlC). But you get the point.

The truth is the both consoles are still selling well, but the PS3 is selling better that's a fact. The 360 reached 70m in 7yrs while the PS3 reached 70m in 6yrs. So the PS3 is definitely selling faster.
