The PS Vita Hacking Scene Suffers a Major Setback

Kotaku - From dedicated memory cards to required internet connection to move files, Sony has taken extra precautionary measures with the PS Vita to prevent the hacking of its hand-held console. This is understandable, considering what happened with the PS3 and PSP. So when a new exploit was released that would allow users to play pirated PSP games on their PS Vitas, it seemed like a victory for the hackers over Sony. But in truth, it was a blow to the hacker community, with almost Shakespearean drama in the background.

2. there is the 3G model, which is always connected to the internet, but in order to transfer any files, you need to use the USB cable, so you couldn't do that while traveling anyways. nerd raging over something that trivial, which can't even be accomplished unless you're at home to begin with, just makes you look like a f***ing idiot.

At any rate, I'm indifferent because Hackers are important in the sense they have prevented corporate oppression in many cases like showing that DX11 could run on older Microsoft software, that phones could be jailbroken, that corporations put spyware into stuff you own. They also help against oppression in other countries and that's the best example of why people should never be fully against hackers.

I don't like it when hackers disrupt services that no one is complaining about, like when they attacked Sony's free internet service, causing Sony to take the service offline for a while. There was no cause for that and it only made public opinion go against them. There was no justification for the attack other than the already proven fact that certain people wanted to merely attack Sony's online service. The actual hackers weren't even the ones cheerleading for it, just a bunch of lazy people who were a part of anonymous who didn't help in any of the good things that anonymous were known for.

Only though custom CFW can one truly utilize all of the potential in Vita, when it comes to homebrew. PSP had some ambious homebrew projects going on, one can just imagine what could be achieved with Vita. Proper N64 emulator, maybe even PS2 emulator. It could also propably run some older PC games aswell.
The down side, of course, is piracy. The piracy on PSP was so out of control. Even with install base of +60 million PSPs, one of the greatest handheld games ever, MGS PW, sold about 400 000 copies in the US, compared to MGS4's 2.52 million and at there was and still is almost the exact same install base of both hardware in the US.

Don't see why you are being disagreed. Reason I use my phone for mobile gaming is because of all the customization, flexibility, and game capabilities. I can play Sega, N64, gameboy, ps1, etc games on my phone. The only downside is the control system.

If the PSVita had good working cfw everything would change, I would buy one instantly, that's for sure. I've used my friends PSVita and I love it, however it's just not for me yet. Being able to freely customize your PSVITA and do things you couldn't otherwise do is the whole point to CFW. Piracy is also a factor, but that's not all CFW is about like most people here seem to think.

I remember I modded the sh*t out of my PSPs, I had 2 of them, I would be able to play GTA Vice City stories with mods, just like PC. It was a blast.

I kind of feel like all the people censuring hackers are like, upper middle class people or people who were fortunate enough to get a job in this economic climate. Add to that latter point that in an economic situation like this, people aren't exactly at an all time high in terms of confidence. The overall vibe during an economic depression stifles people's ambitions, clouds their horizons.

I'm not saying all hackers are indigent, and I'm allowing that there are a lot among them who are probably spoilt brats and who feel like they are entitled to luxury, that it's a right, and that they shouldn't have to work for it, but at the same time, I think it's a little bit arrogant to completely condemn anyone who decides to hack their console.

People who can't afford all these games do kind of suffer in so far as they can't keep up with "what's hot" and "what's popular". Consumerism is a pretty totalizing thing in today's society. If someone can't afford a bunch of games, but everyone else they see around them can, they're probably going to be tempted by the prospect of hacking. Advertisement and the media relentlessly drill the desire for commodities and products into our head, and consumerism has become a monstrous and ubiquitous thing that really does seem to mitigate people's agency somewhat. People almost impulsively, for instance, buy each iteration of apple product despite the fact that they're over-priced and only incrementally different from one another.

It just sort of annoys me how hateful people are. It's not as simple and black and white as "hackers are stealing scum". A lot of them probably are yeah, but you can't tar them all with that brush, I'm certain of that.

It's a kind of social suffering that seems absurd, but it's very real in the consumer societies we live in. It shouldn't exist, but consumer culture's just gotten out of hand. People suffer because they feel like they can't compete; aren't trendy enough; aren't up to date enough. Everyone's guilty here really.

That said, there are obviously greater sufferings in the world, but if we choose to focus on our own western societies, consumerism and commodity fetishism are one of our particularly bad cultural malaises. It's corporate agendas saturating the media and effectively mesmerizing us with their products and the presentation of those products. Making them seem larger than life.

All I'm saying is that some "hackers" or people who choose to pirate entertainment media are almost impelled to by the allure of advertisement. Just how people latch onto trends in clothes and electronic devices. There's a certain amount of free will that's taken away from us by consumer culture and we don't realise it. We don't realise just how much the current of trends carries us.

Yes. I buy the games that is on the US/JP store on PSN. But all the games I want to play isn't there. Then this hack makes it all the better to be able to play it on the Vita.

I don't like the doomsday profetia when talking about piracy, I mean, look at all the consoles that ever have been released since Nintendo 8-bits. They all have been pirated. Loss of third party developers (which are extremely hard to obtain for a device like the Vita) bs security measures that punish those who didn't do anything. I hate pirates, I bought mortal kombat the other day from target and the guy that worked there said hey you know you can hack it and get all the games for free. I wanted to beat the crap out of him, I hate people that don't support the industry.

I buy all my games,I already have more than HALF the games on PSVita section of the store & some psp & ps1 too ! Support rather than steal,you blame Sony for taking precautions to prevent Vita hacks and you defend the idiotic hackers that are responsible for it ! we as honest consumers of Sony products are the ones getting hurt by all this and why ? because of greedy basement dweller who tries to ruin the fun for others !

I will keep supporting my Vita & the devs who are pumping good games into it :D !

As if you were a better person . People are blindly believing into corps filled with strangers ? You are blindly taking the words of strangers .

The industry's history is filled with people claiming their CF and methods won't be abused or arent for that purpose . As usual the valves open , and when the flood begins , people refuse to take responsibility , on both the corporation and hackers sides .

I dont care for either side particularly , except that one actually provide entertainement even if for greed , while the other is mostly the sh*tstorm of drama and unwarranted punishement on regular users .

ANYTHING will get abused by people. The thing is what to do about it. Do you let the actions of the few spoil the whole bunch, or do you find a way to make it so it can still have the good without encouraging the bad?

Thing is, there was a severe Vita issue around what Sony released on the PS Store about the PSP Classics that let to this. People wanted to have digital copies of PSP games when there were none, and Sony were on the "buy it twice" trip, leading to consumer alienation. They already bought their copy. Why should they HAVE to buy another one for the right to do something they should already be able to do anyway? People want convenience, plain and simple, and Sony was instead making them jump through hoops to get there. And why should we take THOSE requests as an intent to pirate ANYTHING? They already own a copy of the game.

And how is Homebrew a form of pirating? I've never seen the answer to this that would be valid. Developers, sometimes talented ones, wanting to get noticed by making games that are outside the corporate umbrella, and they see that avenue as the way to get their foot in the door because they are outside of the sometimes ridiculous regulations by some of the console manufacturers. And when they want to also show what they can do on a particular platform, such as the Vita or PS3, they can also show their talent, and get noticed by possibly some bigger studios that are looking for qualified developers. It's not that hard to make a case for these games to make appearances on any system, but with draconian measures (and people on this and some other sites willing to close their minds and choose to be ignorant to any POV than the one that they've sworn allegiance to), it's hard to really get that point across to anyone.

And Sony will always come out with a new update to attempt to stop hacking. Thats their real secret way to prevent piracy. Same way they do with the Ps3. Just keep coming out with updates.
My response to them? I'm not buying your products any more. What are you going to do about that? Better yet, what can you do? Nothing.
