I think I remember that.Sony said they sold 4 million I think and people were going on about how Microsoft sold 11 million or something and were going on about how it was nothing compared to how much Microsoft sold during the holidays.

So either it is some sort of mistake or mix up or an outright lie by someone.How could they sell that many during the holidays and hardware sales still only add up to 11 million for 2011? @ Godchild1020 so they might have padded their numbers with Kinect only sales? It would be nice if Microsoft did a little more to promote its PC and Xbox 360 platforms with some high quality exclusive IPs. They invented Xbox and left poor PC industry out in the cold. Now its run entirely by Valve it seems and noone minds that at all. I think most actually love it that way. Microsoft has no interest in even in its decade old properties. I know I love Valve.

I think that was combined with kinect only sales. I could be wrong, but the sales figures are great for both Sony and Microsoft. Can wait to see how the numbers pan out for 2012.

yeah that's the problem. MS did outsell the PS3 in America for 11 out of 12 months straight, but Sony outsold it worldwide. i, and many others, keep pointing this out but for some reason MS fans seem to ignore it (or want to). i also called foul on the sales that MS announced around Christmas, but again, fans REALLY believed that MS had stretched the lead back to 6 million sales! dues to the fact that since Christmas the PS3 has outsold the 360 every week, the gap is now 3 million and that gap will shrink even more by next Christmas... or, IMO, PS3 will actually be in front. at which point MS fans will conveniently consider this gen over anyway.

Hopefully we will see some new ips from ALL of the console makers not just a couple...thats one of the factor support is made up of and next gen being around the corner shouldnt mean some mega slowdown. These sales are healthy and ms have made huge strides since their first gen...cant knock that part.

The gap between them in the US is much bigger than the PS3's lead in Japan. The PS3 leads because it sells more pretty much everywhere except the US.

But there are a couple problems with these numbers, first they are all estimates, second they don't include the rest of the world.

Just wait for the earnings reports, it's the only really accurate sales data available.

Excuse me, what? You're joking right? The 360 practically doesn't sell AT ALL in Japan, but the PS3 sells decently enough in the U.S. There is a monumental gap between the PS3 and the 360 in Japan, far greater than the gap between them in the U.S.

What I find funny is how there seems to be info that is omitted as to the percentage of how many more sell. That is the REAL telling of facts here as Dragon & others are implying/saying ~

US PS3 sales = 4.5
US 360 sales = 7.3

PS3 sales of 4.5 is 61% of the 360's sales of 7.3, thus sales ARE there and good compared to ~

JP 360 sales = 0.1
JP PS3 sales = 1.5

360 sales of .1 is JUST 6% of the PS3's sales of 1.5, thus your "point" just helped PROVE what has been said here more so than disprove it.

I could go on and breaking it down even more to emphasize/show how that translates to attachment rates of not only the console to person ratio but also game sales (plus not just for 1 year, from launch to date) and etc...but I would hope there is a point where those who try and make BS up see that their "point" is untrue & invalidated when looked/explained with a proper viewpoint with all the information available at hand, and not just with what they want to be known.

If X360 just sell a little more in Japan, it would become the top seller. No other console sells like 0.1 Japan according to the table.

Microsoft is US brand but what if all the X360 electronics parts and casing are made in Japan? That would make X360 more "Home/Japan made" than other consoles. Will Japanese gamers buy slightly more X360?

MS shipped about 15 million consoles and so will Sony. The gap did not decrease in the past 12 months.

MS stuffed the channels in december. They overshipped. They only sold 1.7 million units in dec. NPD while they were expecting for 2.7mil atleast, VGChartz had 360 at 2.9 mill and had to adjust 360 numbers by 1.2 million.

You'll see that with all those 360s sitting on the shelf, they will ship close to zero next quarter.

These aren't official numbers and they don't include "rest of the world".. I think I will wait for official numbers and expect to see the usual PS3 lead over the 360 though props to MS as the 360 did do well in 2011..

Are Australian sales considered for example? Unless I'm mistaken the PS3 saw a 400% increase in sales there in 2011.. and that's only one of many other regions.. South/Latin America, India, New Zealand, Far East, Middle East (where in 2010 the PS3 accounted for 40% of software sales in the region, 5x more than 360!).. etc etc..

Personally I expect 'all-in' PS3 sales will exceed 360's by around 1-1.5m for 2011 (same period).

I think this report does not show the 1st qtr of 2011 because the Japanese fiscal year starts in April and ends in March (the following year).

And looking at the report, its same as last year. Japan is the only one being shown in the data and not the whole of Asia.

I think it also mentions only 4 EU countries in the report. So I'm not sure how they estimated the sales for the rest of Europe.

Ninty's fiscal estimates are usually spot on, this has nothing to do with Gamingbolt.

Don't forget that the fiscal year in the west and in Japan is different. So this report is probably missing the 1st qtr of 2011 which is the last fiscal qtr of 2010 for the Japanese.

As for people who are saying MS stuffed the channels, I don't think that's entirely true. They only gave what the retailers ordered and we'll see how that affects their shipment in the 1st qtr of 2012.

Microsoft officially announced that they sold 10 million CONSOLES worldwide over the holidays alone. So how could they possibly have only sold 11 million overall? They didn't, they sold far more.

Gaming bolt are notoriously pro Sony, but more importantly they are a particularly rubbish site, regularly posting ridiculous rumours as fact without any evidence, often being disproven easily.

Here's your "official" announcement. No 10 million to be seen. "We shipped 8.2 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2012." I can see your confusion though. At CES, Microsoft announced "over 66 million" 360 users. They then clarified in a press statement the next day, "over 66 million sold" Neither of these claims were true. Those figures were shipped figures, and they still weren't over 66 million like MS claimed.

But, remember last quarter? Microsoft stated they were the best selling console worldwide for the past nine months? Then Sony released their figures and revealed actually, the PS3 was up by almost a million consoles during that time period. Or who can forget when MS claimed a lead in Europe when there was none, then said "Um, we count differently, but the 360 is ahead!"

It's all PR nonsense. I don't know how Microsoft can repeatedly get away with lying to their shareholders about these things, but they can't lie on their earnings reports and that's were it all comes out.

It's funny. I did an article questioning Microsoft's claims of "over 66 million sold" as it didn't seem accurate given the recent sales data we were seeing. When MS's earnings release came out and I was proven correct, that there weren't "over 66 million users" out there in people's hands and Microsoft was playing the ole shipped versus sold for PR purposes, and the numbers still wasn't "over 66 million", there were some around here that demanded I run a retraction because - obviously "over 66 million sold" and "somewhere over 65 million shipped " are exactly the same thing in their minds. These guys pitch a fit when Move and Uncharted 3 figures are claimed sold and later clarified - but for some reason when Microsoft does it and doesn't even bother to issue a release clarifying, or in this case does but still sticks to the lie - hey, that's totally OK. It's only wrong when Sony does it.

Gee, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but...

Nintendo doesn't actually know how many units the competition has sold. These are just estimates.

Ask yourself, how would Nintendo know the exact figure? Maybe you're thinking NPD? Nope. They only cover 60% of the retail market.

Maybe you're thinking Nintendo has insider info from the competing companies? Nope again. That would be illegal.

And what about the competition themselves? Haven't they reveled their own numbers through quarterly and yearly financial reports? Well the answer is yes, and if you crunch those numbers they don't match these estimates.

And of course, the sales on either side of the fence can easily be negated simply by looking at which side has made the most money. The bottom line is what this business is all about.

People spend a lot of time arguing and crowing over sales figures that aren't a true depction of the real market. The truth is always in the bigger picture.

With 360 having one of the worst product failures of all time and not getting a government recall... almost makes me think MS had this s#!t in the bag before the console even started to ship!
