about $300 ... next year im waiting on mass effect 3 hitman hopefully gta5 and borderlands 2 so i think 300 each year is enough for me once i have the platinum i sell them or change them for another game to my friends ...$5,705 sounds crazy

gamingdroid4534d ago (Edited 4534d ago )

I'm thinking less than $300 myself this year as well. The least I have spent in a long time because of other financial obligations I acquired this year.

I used to keep a spreadsheet for this generation, and it was around $4000 total back then, and I'm probably closer to $5000 now. That's lifetime this generation.

That's a lot of dough.... let alone for one year. Even more crazy is 1200 hours playing games and that is only one platform. That's on average 3+ hours a day.

Washington-Capitals4534d ago

As someone who isnt fortunate enough to spend couple hundred dollars a year on video games, i have to sell/trade games to get new ones. With this recent online pass crap, its becoming harder for me to get new games.

Hand it to sony and EA for starting this online pass crap and hurting the lower budget gamers.

darthv724533d ago (Edited 4533d ago )

then again it can be done on a budget. Among the bills and expenses for the family and home I still muster up some spare change to get a game here and there.

I have to say though, I have taken advantage of the used market more so this gen than the last or any prior (buy 2 get 1 free). Maybe thats because there has been such emphasis on the used market where as before it was a little hole in the wall place that traded games.

Now its a way of life for some.

If I had to try and tabulate my overall expense into gaming...it goes back to the days of the 2600 (which I still have) and progressed from there.

I cant think of all that $$$$ that could have been spent elsewhere but if I had to do it over again I would probably leave out the jaguar and 3do systems. I will venture a guess and say its somewhere in the double digits maybe tipping the triple mark.

I must admit though, i have a star wars collection that is just as expensive. Some call it a waste i call it an investment.

AngryTypingGuy4533d ago (Edited 4533d ago )

I usually don't spend too much since I get most games used or from friends unless they have the name "Halo" "Gears of War" or "Elder Scrolls" in the title, in which case I get them brand spanking new. I did buy myself a PS3 this year though so that brought my average up significantly.

darthv724533d ago

an easy $1000 give or take.

morganfell4533d ago

Counting a few pieces of hardware, such as the new PS3 Wireless headset, new 42in 3D plasma for a monitor, and the Gears 360 I hit just over $5200 total.

Darrius Cole4533d ago

This year I've only spent about $275.

Killzone 3
Infamous 2
Uncharted 3
Elder Scrolls 5
Star Wars Force Unleashed II (used)

Next year will be much, Much, MUCH worse. Of the top of my head.

Final Fantasy 13-2
Soul Calibur 5
Dead or Alive 5
Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown
Ninja Gaiden 3
Metal Gear Solid..err...Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

All these are guaranteed purchases for me.

Then there are the other games that I have been anticipating with less concrete but still possible due dates.

The Last Guardian
The Last of Us
FFvsXII

And I'm sure there are a lot of other games that I can't recall right now.

Megaman_nerd4533d ago (Edited 4533d ago )

what the hell?! The guy bought more than 300 games in just one year?! 0-O

teething4533d ago

I just spent about 750$ on a Fanatec racing wheel, stand, shifter, and pedal set with clutch.

Money well spent.

Without gamefly and .coughcoughcoughpiratingcoughc oughthesimsexpansionpackscough c oughandother pc gamescoughcoughcough. I would be over the 1k mark

I wonder how much i spent on clothes and shoes this year .. dear god.

Christopher4534d ago

I'm trying to figure out how you spend that much money on video games. I buy a ton of games and I still spent less than $2k this year. That's with the KZ3, Infamous 2, and U3 CEs as well as more than a few limited editions. That also includes my PSN purchases (though, they were mostly 20-70% off).

John Kratos4534d ago

This. I buy a lot of games, collectors editions and etc. I've probably spent in the 2200 range, and that pretty much picking up every major release on every platform.

The guy in the article is defiantly doing something wrong.

kneon4534d ago (Edited 4534d ago )

"The guy in the article is defiantly doing something wrong. "

Yes he certainly is. He bought 148 PC games this year and played for 52 hours, just over 21 minutes per game.

He spent over $15/hour for PC gaming. On the PS3 he's at $6.35/hour, Xbox $3.38/hour and $0.61/hour on mobile. He seems to be buying for the sake of buying, not to actually play.

MariaHelFutura4534d ago (Edited 4534d ago )

$5705?!?

I think who ever wrote that is lying. You would basically have to buy a new game every 3-4 days. If your counting TVs and Stereo systems sure, games..no way.

Trenta274534d ago

I do buy a new game every few days. I hate buying used games, especially if they are from Gamestop for I like to support the developers for the work they have done. All the games I do buy I play. I don't have many expenses throughout the year so I can afford to put money into gaming.

My wife doesn't like it, though...

Pekka4534d ago

It wouldn't be so difficult, you could buy game every day and still wouldn't be able to buy nearly every game. And most games can be played through within 4-5 hours, shortest games in less than 2 hours (especially if count DLC but even some full games are so short) if you are good gamer. So you can even play through all those games if you only have time (and money). You only need relatively good income to use that much money. A lot of people with mediocre (or even low) income use more on cars every year while there are rich people who don't even have a car.

Remember, thousands of games are released every year even if you only count full-priced games. So even $5705 will only get you very small portion of the games.

ReservoirDog3164534d ago

I personally spent probably in the ballpark of.......$600 on games. Would've been far* less if I'd have figured out that I could get 3 months of Gamefly for about $18. Did that twice so first half of the year was $560 and second half was about $40. And I played more games the second half than I did the first half.

If anyone cares to know how to get it for $18 (it's a legit trick you gotta do), pm me. I'd be glad to help out.

morkendo4533d ago (Edited 4533d ago )

I've spent 64.48 cent on ONE!! game this year,
other bills more important.

RENT
CAR
GAS
FOOD
LIFE INSURANCE
CLOTHES
DINNER DATE ETC....

Infernostew4533d ago

You may have 1 bubble but at least you have your priorities straight. Cheers to that.

StraightPath4533d ago (Edited 4533d ago )

i spent a fraction of that..or people or saying I rented everything...only purchased Skyrim this whole year..LoveFilm is awesome.

SnotyTheRocket4533d ago

I only game on my PS3 (<---- Sony fanboy) and I spent like 250 this year, LBP2, Uncharted, BF3, next year will be crazy, The Last Of Us, StarHawk and others, LONG LIVE TEH GAMINGZORZ

DA_SHREDDER4533d ago

Rule #1 Don't buy games day one, prices drop mere months after a release.

Rule #2 Enjoy the games that you already have, or if you're a ps3 gamer like me, there are alot of free options. (If you have problems doing said rules, then there is more likely a bigger problem at hand. You probably need therapy, and need to find another hobby.)

EcoSos34534d ago (Edited 4534d ago )

I spent about 4000 with all the pre-order for next year included the psvita with games is like 600, and thats what i can remember it maybe more than 5000 but whatever.

Titanz4534d ago (Edited 4534d ago )

It has nothing to do with, "T&A,Gore, or cursing" (those games are just mature themed titles).

To be clear though, Steam does not restrict use of their platform in any country. So, to say that Sony delisted games in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and other similar regions is disingenuous. The taliban doesn't allow video games in Afghanistan.

There are many restrictions in many countries. Painting this as a false dichotomy of Sony or Valve ignores all other layers of what is going on.

Just be honest in your journalism about what countries are left out. Those countries should a) have internet access b) allow the game.

18h ago
H91h ago

There's literally almost 170 countries and mentioned 3, and Taliban banned PUBG only, do you seriously think that these countries that had games all this time, suddenly decided to ban games when Sony wanted to put PSN as a restriction

anast1h ago

Sony would be stupid to let valve run the show. They would be bad at business if they did that.

Why Xbox believes it must cut costs and close studios

i mean its pretty simple, they spent close to 30 billion in acquiring activision, they thought they'd make it bk no problem, and that didnt happen.

its just shit that because of MS's miscalculation alot of people lost their jobs.

Jingsing1h ago

This is exactly what many people said would happen including the CMA and FTC. Lies lies and more lies and they allowed a $69 billion buy out to happen.

gold_drake53m ago

oh yeh it was 70 billion. that was my bad haha even worse.

thesoftware73051m ago(Edited 46m ago)

gold,

You can't be serious, right?

Do you think that MS thought they would make 80bill in a year & Half? They haven't even released titles under MS yet, lol.

But in fact, that A/B revenue is already paying off, look at the last earnings call. That $80 billion is long-term money, my guy, no sane person/company would think they would make that back in any short-term situation, it's a long-term investment.

Let's play silly then. If MS's reason for laying off staff and closing studios was due(which it really was not) to the A/B deal, tell me what Sony's reason was for past studio closures, the recent 900-person layoffs, closing Sony London, shutting down Dreams, and closing Japan Studio? Zipper? Psygnosis? cuts at all their internal studios.

Keep in mind, you are claiming MS's reason is because of the A/B deal; please explain Sony's reason.

Hofstaderman42m ago

You actually still defending them? Sheesh.....

gold_drake41m ago

this is not a sony vs MS debate. dont make it something it isnt.

and of course not, but im pretty sure they thought they'd make more money after the deal. they didnt, and closed off some studios.

its pretty insane to think there is any other reason for the closure of studios in this case.

romulus2334m ago(Edited 33m ago)

(It really was) due to the Activision Blizzard deal and the loss of physical sales due to gamepass. You keep bringing up Sony in all your posts about this, stop deflecting and trying to change the topic, this is about MS and what they are doing.

anast1h ago

They are going to use AI for a large portion of the game development process. Upper management need bonuses and the shareholders need more money. So, people will lose their jobs.

Skuletor53m ago

Maybe they were already using AI to make business decisions, which would explain why they closed Hi-Fi Rush's studio, then said they need more games like Hi-Fi Rush not long after that announcement.

Crows9021m ago(Edited 21m ago)

They shouldn't have bought any studios. Some is okay...but they went on a shopping spree...stupid
