Well, I'd actually rather pay for online multiplayer this time around so that they can actually raise some money to work on making their service faster/more dependable etc.

It seems like a very reasonable policy. After all, I've been paying $60/year for XBL for the last 6 years, so it'll be nice to cancel that and pick up PS+, which is clearly a better value, and in my opinion might even become the better service if Sony invests the raised PS+ funds into it.

PS4 is not going to be more powerful than a good PC, although the hardware consistency allows for developers to get more out of a PS4 than if you had a PC with the exact same specs. A high or top end PC will always have more raw power to put out though.

I'm perfectly fine with paying to play online. I expected, and wanted, it to happen. Anything to make the service better. I'm not saying it was bad to begin with, but it definitely needed improvement. This benefits the consumer in another way in that Sony is now more accountable for anything that could happen in terms of outages and whatnot.

Competition is always a good thing. The XBox Two is very likely to be much more performance orientated because of the associated criticisms at the One's architecture and lack of targeted high end graphic rendering (not my words, but MS's).

The 360 came out like gang busters because of previous lessons learned on the OXBox as well as building/improving on what made the PS2 dominant.

The PS3 services improved because MS had there stuff together with the 360. Sony couldn't just match them. They had to surpass expectations (PSPlus) to present a compelling argument (as there was none before) and to change the narrative at the time.

The PS4 (general launch experience and general perception) improved because Sony learned some hard lessons.

The XBox Two (general launch experience and general perception) will improve as well because MS will learn from prior mistakes as well.

If console A is capable of rendering much better graphics than console B then i dont expect the two versions of the game to be the same. Specs matter but games>specs. I game on PC as primary platform ATM but the article is right as nearly all PS4 games look as good or better than at least 75% of PC games of today. When it releases that might change though as new engines scale better (both up and down) so PC will see even better looking games as well.

To be honest I would be happy if many PC games looked as good as Killzone 3 or Infamous SS. We have some that look better but not all devs can afford or attempt that level of quality. When they do yes its usually better but that's the minority to be honest.

yes. my daughters pc is connected to a 120 inch screen and it is entirely controlled by the xbox 360 controller.
It has all of their movies, all of their music, all of their games (snes,genesis,master syetem, n64,dreamcast,psx,ps2, gamecube, wii, and of course bout 30 PC games ranging from mw3 to crisis 2. its got a blu ray drive wifi N and a wireless 360 receiver all in a small compact package. about the size of a 360 original.

the only games it doesn't push 1080p with is crisis 1 and 2

the card they have installed is the 6770 low profile edition

all of this was built for 600 bucks in hardware.

all of the software can be launched closed and controlled no matter what console is playing via the 360 controller.

so in a long ass answer.. Yes and my kids love it.

oh and this pc has never been upgraded and is still trouncing the ps3 and 360 in terms of horsepower over a year after I bought it and built it.

This will probably be the case for a short while like it was with the X360/PS3.

Typically the only differences were things like higher rez textures, advanced depth of field, farther LoS on objects, higher world density, stereoscopic 3D, and higher resolutions than 1080p and higher FPS than the standard 30-60fps.

Skyrim maxed is around 80+ fps.

Many peps out there disagreed with me but it's the truth, a single 780 can do just fine in 4k if you don't max out AA and tune down a bit to console level details. I guess sony fanboy are buthurt.

I have a amd 6870. which is 2 tflops.

A 6870 is not as powerful as a 7870 which is at 2.56tflops

A 7870 has 156gb/s bandwidth, while the PS4 does more.

Also Sony's version of GPU is custom, by both amd and sony.

Most things that slow down GPU'S. Poor code.

Shadows,Shaders,particles,lig hts etc.

PS4 is a highend custom PC.

The primary difference comes about from the abstraction penalty we find with graphics apis on a PC versus the specialized apis we find on the consoles due to their fixed-hardware. For example, our current consoles are capable of pushing out 2-3x the number of draw calls than would be possible in a similar PC counterpart. "Poor code" doesn't really come into it.

Update: Brian Karis, senior graphics programmer at Epic Games adds some more insight in the comments below, explaining some of the more obvious differences - particularly in terms of the very different lighting schemes. At the technical level, the two demos are closer than it seems:

"The biggest changes actually came from the merging of two separate cinematics, the original Elemental and the extended Elemental we showed at PS4's launch event. Each had different sun directions and required some compromises to join them. This resulted in some major lighting differences that aren't platform related but were due to it being a joined cinematic. Another effect, in the original you could see the mountains through the door where in the merged one we made the view through the door white since the mountains outside were no longer the same. Same deal with the mountain fly by. The old mountain range doesn't exist in the new one. These changes from the merge make direct comparisons somewhat inaccurate.

"Feature wise most everything is the same, AA resolution, meshes, textures (PS4 has tons of memory), DOF (I assure you both use the same Bokeh DOF, not sure why that one shot has different focal range), motion blur.

"Biggest differences are SVOGI has been replaced with a more efficient GI solution, a slight scale down in the number of particles for some FX, and tessellation is broken on ps4 in the current build which the lava used for displacement. We will fix the tessellation in the future."

7870 + jaguar = med spec

2013 will be change a little bit, >8 TF = Highest end PC

The 8000 series was just a rebrand. Essentially all OEM in fact. The 9000 series on the other hand is extpected to intoduce the 9970 as a ~8.2 tflop single gpu card with a timeframe set for october.

Comparing ps4 prices to a gaming pc's isn't appropriate. Pc is designed to do a whole lot more than only gaming. Pc gamers also spend lots of money on their devices because they can `afford it'.
Also video games are created with consoles in mind so expect them to be thoroughly optimised for console.
Pc is also a fluctuating platform with different people having different hardware which makes coding to the pc quite hard.
All in all ps4 at the very best can compete with a mid range gaming pc but not a high end one, not now not ever.

You obviously don't understand what cerny means. He doesn't mean that you can customize the hardware itself. You left out architecture in the "quote" you provided above, which is a pretty important word in this instance. He means that all of the hardware shares the same pool of ram and so forth, meaning that it can be allocated for any purpose. Imagine you work on a farm that grows pears and apple. You are tasked with picking apples and pears but you need to baskets because pears can only fit into one and apples can only fit into the other, so you have to lug around two baskets. That's what a PC's ram is like. RAM on the PS4 would be more comparable to having one basket that can carry both kinds. The RAM is unified and can be allocated to do any task. Versatile would have been a better word that customizable in this instance.

Cerny can yammer all he likes (like a good corporate dog ought to) and PlayStation drones will drink his bathwater. The reality is the Ps4 and Xbox one are frankly underwhelming hardware and are not big enough of a jump from last gen. Why? Same reason as always: cost cap. How much do you think a company can give you for $400-$500? That barely buys you a high end graphics card in the computer world. Cerny like anyone who represents a brand is trying his best to put positive spins on it. The reality is a highend PC from two years ago mops the floor with the PS4, DDR3 and all--nothing to brag about really as there is no cost cap in the pc world. But these statements and articles which put graphics and pc-console comparisions in the same sentence, and the ignorant fanboys who eat it up, are only serving to perpetuate a moronic notion. $500 hardware does not EVER compare with recent computer hardware. It's that simple.
Here is something that sums it up: if any game launches where there is "little difference" between graphics on ps4 and a high end pc than they simply didn't design the game to utilize the power of pc. PERIOD. These platforms are simply in separate leagues and always will be.

I agree with the Hardware part. I would rather pay $600 for a completely awesome badass piece of hardware, but that doesn't happen anymore. Sony tried it once and it almost forced them out of the console business. I also, build PC's for fun. I build them whenever I can. I've got many friends that I've build for. You B point doesn't make much sense. You can't say that I didn't mention the downside, and then not say what it is. Are you talking about latency? Because the comparison wasn't supposed to be comparing the types of ram, just how it was used. Also, I assumed you needed an analogy to understand, because you clearly have no clue what Cerny meant. Even if PC's have more power what PC owners have to realise is that other than turning on graphical enhancements the truly next gen features don't get included until the consoles catch up. Having a high end PC doesn't guarantee innovation because they all have different specs, you can't just go adding in loads of features that won't run on a lower powered computer.

PC's will always be just one step ahead of consoles in graphical capabilities but its the consoles that determine everything else such as AI and physics.

By the time it actually hits the market, High end Computers will outclass it. Computers are meant to be upgraded. If there is "Very Little" difference now, by the time the PS4 actually hits the market you may not want to compare again.

Consoles are not upgrade friendly. They are made for consistency. Every game you buy you know will run on the system. Computers will always...always...end up blowing away any console on the market if not at launch...by 6 months.

Besides...PS3 was stronger then the 360..but, didn't dominate and is outsold in many markets...

2 things "core" gamers are either A) stupid or B) should now realize console specs don't determine how well your system will turn out. First year the games on consoles will match pc's then after that pc version of games will be superior. I used to think the ps3 could match high end pc quality until i got a high end pc, Theres just so much missing on console versions of games its ridiculous. bf3 console was horrible. borderlands 2 console version had no physx support and that takes alot out of the game. Its like playing on medium settings when playing on consoles. Console gamers don't see these things and think they're getting the same quality of a game because you don't miss what you never had, simple as that. And no im not talking about exclusives because those are made for the console so you cant see the limitations because there's nothing to compare exclusives to.
