Typical press language - non affirmation and non-denial. I know this probably isn't the case, but surely they cannot be greedy to the point of banning used games - it's a market that has thrived since first beginning in yard sales, and a move like that would only serve to alienate a fan base.

IAMERROR4112d ago

I find this highly unlikely to happen, MS was one of the major publishers to not do Online passes for their games. If MS and/or Sony do this it would only hurt themselves. Forget all these rumors, let's just wait a few more weeks :)

Shadow Flare4112d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

MS didn't do online passes because they already make you pay to play online. Can you imagine paying for the game, then paying for Xbox live to play the online part of the game you've already bought, and then paying for an online pass to play online which you've paid for to play the online part of the game you've already paid for?

To be honest I'm surprised Microsoft didn't do online passes

IAMERROR4111d ago

Exactly what I mean, they could've done it. lol
rumors be getting outta hand MS betta hurry up :P

MikeMyers4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

Why would Microsoft confirm or deny it when they can sit back and laugh at all the reactions on the internet? Do you think they care about all the negativity they have received over the years since they announced they were getting into the console market? People thought the Xbox 360 would be a failure, not be supported beyond 4 years like the original. They thought Kinect wouldn't sell. They thought the lack of AAA exclusives would be the death of them.

People will always paint a negative outlook on them (Nintendo and Sony are not immune to it either on forums). Now here we are with them selling roughly 76 million systems and still selling over 8 years later. If the rumors start hurting their stock then yes, they may say something. But right now there's no need to.

According to the internet nobody should be buying Call of Duty games. Look how much influence that had.

AAACE54111d ago

I remember a time when companies like ms used to say "we dont comment on rumors and speculation". I guess either times have changed or there is some truth to it.

Dont think im bashing... because its said that sony was planning something similar with ps4.

Hopefully this will send a message to both companies so they can switch their strategy.

EVILDEAD3604111d ago

'Why would Microsoft confirm or deny it when they can sit back and laugh at all the reactions on the internet?'

@ Mike

Well Said.

If companies respond to every bogus rumor then it rewards these hit seeking blogger for spreading misinformation.

Even if Sony spills the beans in Feb, all eyes will still be on MS at E3 and that's a position that they would want to be in.

It's Feb and no one will even care about these silly rumors in July.

The story of the internet gaming world...

Evil

pandaboy4111d ago

The always online and no used games policy was probably leaked on purpose by microsoft to test public reaction. Reaction deems it a mistake.

hazardman4111d ago

Not really because when you buy it new it already comes with the pass. The people who buy used are the ones paying for online pass. That's why I believe if you can, buy new, plus it seems like developers are adding little extras for buying new/preordering.

Ju4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

MS is behind...I don't expect Sony to fully reveal the PS4 in February. They will just realse so much info that people get really hyped to see the "real" thing at E3.

I cannot see how MS can counter that other then also releasing some information before E3...Sony will have a massive presentation there, too, just to make sure MS won't sail away with the show.

They sure doing this Feb event because they are very serious about this this time around.

Never count out MS, that's for sure. But things really point to a MS-Sony reversal compared to PS3360...

1nsaint4111d ago

@MikeyMyers @EVILDEAD360 why would MS sit back and laugh? They are gonna lose a ton of sales based on all the reactions here on n4g, other gaming sites and youtube videos that discussed this topic

Megaton4111d ago

You do realize XBL Gold is an online pass, right? You have to pay their fee if you wanna play anything online.

_FantasmA_4111d ago

No online pass? What do you think Live is?

kariyanine4111d ago

@Shadow Flare can I imagine it? Sure I can, every third party game on 360 that had an online pass already did this.

Dee_914111d ago

I think react is the wrong word .... more like Microsoft says basically nothing about next gen rumors.
I mean I dont expect them to say anything but the article is misleading

4111d ago
showtimefolks4111d ago

IAMERROR

i guess when you pay $5-60 each year that in a way is for online pass, sad thing is MS releases maybe 2-3 great exclusives so if they did have online passes gamers might have saved $20-30 bucks lol

I don't think any publisher has the balls to block used games sales, but you better believe that they will raise the price for online passes to maybe $15.

gamers think they have every right to buy and sell used games

publishers believe they have ever right to make as much money of their IP's as they can

who wins? Publishers, thing is if you like a game than you gonna buy that no matter what, i try to wait for price drops but than i do buy new so the money goes to the publishers/developers

MikeMyers4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

1nsaint,

How can they be losing sales on a product that has yet been announced? If the rumors are true then yes, they could lose sales. However as of right now they are just that, rumors.

Like I said earlier, unless Microsoft's stock suddenly takes a tumble they won't worry about what people are saying on forums in response to rumors. It could also be a ploy to get fan reaction but that seems likely since consumers won't want to just give up something for nothing. Either way there is no product yet, therefore no lost sales. In fact there isn't even any pre-orders because nothing has been announced yet.

Gaming1014111d ago

Never underestimate the greed of corporate executives, as they bow to every stupid demand of faceless, greedy shareholders.

insomnium24111d ago

@mike

" People thought the Xbox 360 would be a failure,"

I never saw such talk in such a scale that it could be mentioned like that

"not be supported beyond 4 years like the original."

People said MS would drop support after new gen launched like they did to xbox. This remains yet to be seen after new gen arrives at retail.

"They thought Kinect wouldn't sell."

Noone though it wouldn't sell. My gosh. People knew MS was going to put 0.5 billion into marketting the damn thing so who in their right mind thought it wouldn't sell. People said it would be a bs device for gaming and this has proven to be true.

" They thought the lack of AAA exclusives would be the death of them."

It might be difficult to get the hc-fans on board next gen after the switch they did with x360. Fool me once shame on you....etc. This too remains to be seen.

MikeMyers4110d ago

insomnium2,

The point is forums are not the deciding factor to what actually happens at retail.

No, they confirmed that they wont have used games blocked, they said sony has that technology not them.

They actually adressed both issues, people here has a problem understanding whats been said.
They confirm it was a rumour of always online and that they dont have tech to block used games.

The technology to block pre-owned games seems to be in line with what Sony is planning for the next PlayStation.

user39158004111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

Many disagrees, lol. I guess the comprehension level here in N4g its extremely low, They did confirmed it, either they cant comprehend english or want to start more rumours.

What part of they dont have the technology to block used games this website forum dont get? Only sony has that technology. Read the article 10x until you are able to get it.

Army_of_Darkness4111d ago

" What part of they dont have the technology to block used games this website forum dont get? Only sony has that technology. Read the article 10x until you are able to get it. "

what article are you referring too?? cause clearly that information is not on this one...

ziggurcat4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

hate to burst your bubble, buddy, but sony's not going to do that either. tretton has publicly stated that he is opposed to blocking used games, that it is anti-consumer.

and before you say, "bu-bu-but they filed a patent!" - sony filed an identical patent prior to the launch of the PS3, and last i checked we can play used games on the PS3.

patents don't matter because most of them don't even see the light of day. that particular patent is no different.

also whenever a company states that they don't comment on rumour or speculation, it's pretty clear that they're hiding something. i don't think MS would implement such a thing, but that type of comment usually isn't good.

@ nlvwithgms: please point out the part in the article where MS says that sony is the only one to have that technology... oh, wait... you can't because the only thing they said in response was that they didn't comment on rumour or speculation.

jmac534111d ago

@ziggurcat: Microsoft never responds to rumors or speculation whether it's a good rumor or a terrible one. They always have the same response. Which is why this article is pointless.

HITANDRUN4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

http://www.arabicgamers.com...

uGH.. WHICH IS WORST? Cant follow links, cant read or just cant comprehend?

Microsoft has released a statement in response to rumours about the next-generation Xbox.

Yesterday it was reported that the next Xbox would require an always-on internet connection and that it wouldn't support second-hand games.

We contacted the platform holder and it revealed that while it is always thinking about the future, it has nothing else to report right now.

"Microsoft does not comment on rumours or speculation," said a Microsoft spokesperson.

"We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

The technology to block pre-owned games seems to be in line with what Sony is planning for the next PlayStation.

It's all speculation for now, but Sony is hosting an event on 20 February where it could officially reveal the PlayStation 4.

greenpowerz4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

Like I said I find it odd suddenly so much pro Sony propaganda is coming out and so much anti MSFT misinformation. Sony guys are going to try and destroy the 720's reputation and Sony knows it.

Sony depends on people like shadowflare to troll the webs smearing MSFT a.d praising Sony.

All this Sony hype and anti MSFT noise originated from the leaked 720 docs/rumored specs.

What the heck is Shadow Flare even talking about?
MSFT *supposedly* doesn't allow online passes with their own games or all games? Google's your friend buddy.

cornroves4111d ago

If the statement is not in quotes, then they did not say it buddy just sayin....

BitbyDeath4111d ago

Think you are reading it wrong HitAndRun, all they said was this -

"Microsoft does not comment on rumours or speculation," said a Microsoft spokesperson.

"We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Neither of that confirms nor denys the rumour.

Mr_Writer854111d ago

That link you posted :D

If you weren't a retard you would see the part where " END. It means that's what MS stopped talking.

Microsoft has released a statement in response to rumours about the next-generation Xbox.

"Microsoft does not comment on rumours or speculation," said a Microsoft spokesperson.

"We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time." END

Then the website reporting puts...

The technology to block pre-owned games seems to be in line with what Sony is planning for the next PlayStation.

It's all speculation for now, but Sony is hosting an event on 20 February where it could officially reveal the PlayStation 4.

Do you see any " "? No so that means MS never confirmed on denied anything.

You've had a right tard moment there.

JsonHenry4111d ago

I think it is very likely to happen. PC games make a FORTUNE and the vast majority are tied to a personal account of some sort that makes it impossible to resell or trade. The PC is also proven that always connected internet and digital distribution has reached mainstream potential.

Combine those facts listed above with the fact that Sony/MS both get a royalty fee for every NEW copy sold and the studios also make their money when a new copy of a game is sold and you have the two parties pushing the consoles heavily interested in making sure the only copies sold are new copies and you have the perfect storm for a push to end sales of used games.

I know it seems crazy but just 10 years ago I could trade in my used PC games just like a console game. That is all over now. And the fact that the consoles are just standardized PCs next generation I think you are looking at the beginning of the end of used games if not the actual end itself.

Jazz41084111d ago

I hate to burst anyones opinion but what ms said is in quotes. The website that wrote this is the one that brought sony into this. Thats all.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

"I know this probably isn't the case, but surely they cannot be greedy to the point of banning used games"

Xbox gamers can't allow this.
Next thing they will charge for multi player.. ohhhhhhh

AngelicIceDiamond4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

I understand Sony filed the patent years ago before the PS3 came out but they recently refreshed that patent.

Well almost 3 summers ago Sony announce they would put online passes for its exclusive games. They went through with it. It all adds up? Why would the patent resurface after all these years? And why would Sony require online passes for its games this gen?

If the rumor is indeed true it'll more than likely won't be for third party games but Sony's own exclusives.

As for MS, well this leak was inevitable. which makes sense seeing how publishers are fighting against second hand sales.

Either way these rumors are ridiculous and hope aren't true, as with everything Only time will tell.

Gamer19824111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

Activision will do this next gen you can put your money on that. You will get COD on two discs (sold separate!) one single player and one multi player. Or a subscription service. They tried it already with ELITE.

Banning used games would kill console sales and they know this if they have any sense. Imagine if existing consoles didnt allow used games right? And you today never owned a 360 and fancied playing Halo 3. Tough luck as they no longer make it new and only way you could get it pre-owned. Where as if if it wasnt blocked you could go out buy a new 360 and Halo 3 pre-owned and play. This is of course just an example. But the point is still there. Used games sells consoles too! As it gives you a back catalogue long after the devs stop making it.

isyourhouseonfire4111d ago

Why not ban used games? If I had a business and people were selling my products used, then I also would look at a why to crush that. Sure, they aren't breaking the law, but if I can be smart enough to overcome it then I'll make much more money.

Can't blame MS at all.

jmac534111d ago

Because you are taking away people's rights to their own property. Your logic says that no one has a right to resell their car because the manufacturer is not making any money off the sale. You don't see car makers going out and crushing used car sales.

hellvaguy4111d ago

Theres no "rights" invoked when it comes to software like in a video game. You get whatever rights a company sets for you.

I see the used car example as apples vs oranges. A car is perishable. A video game, for the most part, is not. Steam games follows the business model of tying your game to your account and you cannot resell it.

Now with all that said, I would prefer being able to buy/sell used games. However, I dont see it as a right guarenteed by the constitution or anything on that level.

Mr_Writer854111d ago

Jmac

Where do you go when you're used Ford car breaks down and needs new parts? A garage, and where do they get the parts from? Ford.

So while you may not of bought the car from Ford, if anything breaks Ford get you're money.

imdaboss14111d ago

they need to respond to this cuz its very serious and a lot of people is planning to jump to the ps4..microsoft is getting hit big time cuz of this rumor

_FantasmA_4111d ago

I think ppl were planning on moving to the PS4 anyways. More games, more features, more reliable hardware, free online are just some of the things that Sony offers and for a lower price than M$.

theWB274111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

How are they getting hit on a product that hasnt been announced. Sells arent dropping...its rumors until they announce what they want to announce. When its officially unvieled and people complain is when they should be worried. Ive never seen a company fail based on a non existent product with bad rumors.

@fantasmA...if people were jumping ship it would have already started this gen. Xbox sells havent dropped and PS3 has been free for quite some time...enough time to have seen the reprocussions this gen,

Ju4111d ago

It's quite surprising that MS got nothing since all those rumors started...first time ever...press time is quite important no matter what you have to say. Wondering why they stay so quiet.

they said it different than the way you wrote it

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

jwillj2k48h ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot7h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga1d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow2d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1821d 8h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie23h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Hereandthere14h ago

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow11m ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.
