Since the launch of the Playstation 3 Sony has always said they were committed to their Playstation fans, and wanted to make the PS2 to Playstation 3 transition as easy as possible. In the early days backwards compatibility was a part of the plan.

What many people don't realise is the potential of western gamers finally getting their hands on FF12 International Zodiac - the immensely improved version that was never localized!

I love the art style used in FF12 and i'll pay obscene money to play it in HD with the new Zodiac license boards.

I'm afraid we will have to be more realistic. It is SquareEnix being talked about. I wouldn't be to far out of line to expect to see a simple HD bundle of Final Fantasy X and X-2 and that's it. I believe Final Fantasy X had an international version as well with more conent which we probably won't be seeing.

I also wouldn't be suprised if they sold each of the Final Fantasy X games HD at $40 per rather than bundled at $40.

I would also love to see Kingdom Hearts bundle that includes the Final Mix versions of both 1 and 2, but again this is SquareEnix we are talking about.

There is no guarantee that they will ever remake PSOne games in this manner because they would take more work. Any PS2 game that spans multiple titles is fair game though, so if SE is doing Final Fantasy it will be FFX/X-2/XII. If they are doing Final Fantasy then it's logical to assume they will do Kingdom Hearts as well and hopefully it will be the Final Mix versions.

I currelty play FFVII Ultima Edition on my EEE Netbook, so amazing. To see all that amazingly adorably awesome pre-rendered backgrounds in FULL FREAKING 1080p HD ... wow!!!
But I think is would be too good to be true, they would have to re-render all that stuff. Furthermore, it's a PS1 game .. they were talking about PS2 games.
My guess would be FFX+FFXII.

On a side note, they are SO MANY forgotten gems ... hundreds and hundreds of hours of amazing gameplay experiences from the past. It's a shame that so many are forgotten .. old "low budged" movies are being re-shown on crappy TV stations over and over, but old games.. so hard to get your hands on some of them.

I don't know how the concept of remastering a PS1 title loses so many people. Is it that difficult to understand? You up the resolution, textures, framerate, etc... just like they do with the PS2 games.

well the remastered games are GREAT but a hundred dollar(guess) add on box that plays ps2 games (like the one they patented or whatever) is a fu**** rip off. I can get a ps2 to do the same thing for 20 bucks. Unless it upscales no buy. Just another way to sell a smaller ps2 that hooks up to your ps3.

Ok, "MGS2 Sons of Liberty" in the U.S. was on the PS2.

The real "Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake" came out for the MSX2 and is considered "one of the best 8 bit games ever made" then was released in the U.S. as part of Metal Gear Solid 3 Susistence.

Playing ICO the jaggies nearly cut my eyes. I dont remember them being so bad before and I'm pretty sure if I hooked up to one of those old fishbowl tube TV's (god where would I even find one, museum perhaps) that it wouldnt be.

Plus very few game were in Widescreen, so its either stretch it or play with the bars on the side.

I understand cutting cost at hardware level, but how is it not possible to provide software emulation even if not 100% for those whom have collected a library of PS2 games that no longer have a PS2 console or it has worn out (DRE, etc.).

they just twisted it around to make some cash out of it, sucks somewhat (I have MGS2, MGS3 havent even finished that) and i'll get the urge to rebuy the remakes. but

a) its great value (usually 2, sometimes 3 games in one disk for 40 bucks = not bad)

b) its better quality (PS2 games on HD tv's = horrible =|)

c) you get extra content / trophy support/ etc.

so its a bit of a trade off, sure it costs, but hey, it could have been way worst IMHO(make shitty ports at 60 each for example)

I have a launch 60 GB that has full BC, but I'd much rather play a game like Shadow of the Colossus in HD remastered form, especially on my TV. I don't "have" to buy any of my old games; I'll buy the games I want to play through again. The Team ICO games look incredible, and I'd definitely be on board for MGS3, FF VII, FF XII, or DQ VIII in HD.

Diacy, I understand where you're going with that (despite your obvious icon being extremely obvious). I have a library of PS2 games that will not get either a PSN store or HD treatment, seeing how the PS1 games in the PSN US store are severely lacking (see my above comment on Einhander).

However, I also agree with Megatron - I put in SotC on a smaller HDTV, and it's really hard to even play it the way it looks.

The problem here is that less popular titles or just plain ignored for no reason titles will be ignored again. Maybe, just maybe, we'll see Persona 3 FES and Persona 4. ZOE 1 and 2? I wouldn't plan on it. The Devil Summoner series? Haha, no. Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and God Hand? The company's dissolved; Capcom has the rights to them, but they're not going to do anything with them.

Anyway, the PS2 has such an extensive library that I could go on forever. You get my point. If it won't sell in bulk, it's not going to be remastered or downloadable, and not being able to play these titles will make me a sad panda.

They take their time and think things through for long term success. They don't simply react to flash-in-the-pan market demands, especially if it's not profitable for them.

The Remastered PS2 games are a brilliant idea. There are really only a handful of PS2 games that current gamers would want to play again anyways. Add in HD, trophy support, affordability for gamers, profit for developers, and the fact that it's an actual PS3, everybody wins.

Fact is, many of the officially supported games are not working well. Artefacts, horrible framerate and freezes... I'm not calling that a good backward compatibility. The only console with perfect BC is the Wii.

While the remastered hd compilations are a good idea,I still think that they should eventually incorporate ps2 backwards compatibility in ps3 consoles that are non-backwards compatible, because there are a lot of good ps2 titles from different companies that will probably never make it as a hd remastered release. Just a though that it would be a good idea for them to eventually incorporate ps2 backwards compatibility in non-backwards compatibility ps3 console through a firmware update(ps2 emulation).

If Sony won't provide PS2 BC emulation for free then charge a reasonable price for it to give people the option. I think these kind of decisions can scar a company's reputation in the long run due to initially promoting features and then removing them and claiming PS3 only does everything in commercials. Then stating in interviews it's practically possible but due to cost of feature support their consumers aren't worth the effort if provided for free.

I hoped for real backwards compatibility, hell I would even have bought it. It is understandable that it costs a lot of money to develop an emulator that works, but they could have sold it in the ps-store. The Hd-remake solution is only interseting for people who missed those games and don't own a PS2. I'm going to buy Shadow of the colossus and Ico when the remake comes out because i missed them last gen and they are hard to find and rather expensive for ps2 games. But I won't buy my games again because they look prettier and have trophies. I've never been a graphic whore and won't start now, and I'm not interested in trophies.

@gamerdude, I'll try and answer your questions the best I can.

First, all PS3s initially had complete hardware and software emulation. This was for all the 20GB and 60GB PS3 units. After that, in order to drastically cut the costs of the PS3, they had to remove some of the hardware that was inflating the price of PS3 systems, and one of the larger expenses they found was the "Emotion Processor" hardware used with PS2 games. So by removing that and having emulation run more software based than hardware based, they cut costs down a decent amount when they released the 80GB model of PS3.

There is some confusion with this model (80GB PS3) however, as later backward compatibility was completely removed from other 80GB models. I believe it wasn't until after Metal Gear Solid 4's release, and after they released the 40GB PS3s that they removed it, because again, there was still part of the PS2's hardware inside the PS3 that was causing prices to be higher than what they wanted. So after removing that, the PS3 received another price drop. Ever since then, they haven't had any new PS3 SKUs that have had PS2 backward compatibility, however all PS3s have PS1 backward compatibility.

For your second question, there are some key differences and improvements in PS3 models, besides the B/C functionality I mentioned. The old models had few discernible differences, besides the 20GB being the only model not with a wireless adapter integrated. Comparing the newer slim models to the oldschool large PS3, you'll notice an actual significant difference in loading times. The newer slim models have the newer, smaller, more powerful, cheaper, and less power-consuming Cell chips integrated. In addition, they seem to have even better Blu-Ray drives installed. THe only downside I've found is that you have only two USB ports, as opposed to 4 in the old ones, and the card reader slots are gone (which most people didn't seem to use anyway).

For your third question, it's all about personal perspective on the matter. I personally see the HD remakes as very worthwhile, while others may not. I still have B/C in my PS3, but I'd rather have the HD Remakes, due to everything they add in. Improving textures, models, increasing audio quality and offering 5.1 or 7.1 uncompressed audio options, plus trophy support, in some cases Move and/or 3D support, and being able to still access the XMB (something you can't do when playing PS2 games normally on PS3) definitely make it worthwhile to me. Not only that, but some of these games being remastered, I either don't have, or haven't played.

And if it is such a financial detriment to some folks, I'd imagine selling the originals will net them more than half the money required for a new copy of the HD Remake. So far, all the Remakes seem to be priced at $40, including Sly which has 3 games, all with Move and 3D support. Buying new copies of the Sly series individually on PS2 could end up costing more than the HD Remake actually.

I'm not against the HD remakes nor am I completely for them. I think it's neat to have the games you missed look better and whatnot, but I do think playing the games you already have in PS2 would've been a good move as well. Oh... I can get Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2 now. OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH. Okay, I'm loving Sony more and more by the second. I just hope I don't turn into some of the... umm... extreme PlayStation fans that we have on this site.

No problem, glad to help man. Also, sorry for the epicly long post, haha. Yeah, I personally would say your best bet is to grab a new Slim model, just due to the raw power you are gonna get there, plus a nice large HDD.

I agree that it's a shame they took out at least the option to play some of the older games, however I have to be honest, what he says in the article about each specific game needing real specific tweaks to optimize it, or even to make it work, is correct. So it would have been a nightmare trying to get it running for even half the games out there on PS2. I say this because I have one of the 80GB B/C models, and even with partial hardware emulation I still tend to have a lot of issues with games that aren't the most popular.

Some examples of this: With Psychonauts, the pre-rendered video scenes completely stutter and hiccup, will go out of sync with the audio, and this happens constantly making it impossible to watch. With Yakuza 1, there is a certain point in the game when you're rescuing a girl, and it locks up completely every single time. With the games Wild Arms 4 and even with 5, the games simply won't load at all. Even with the original Jak and Daxter, the game will still lock up after about your first 5 minutes of gameplay. And none of the Shin Megami Tensei games have worked for me, except Digital Devil Saga.

However, other games, like MGS2 and MGS3, both God of Wars, Shadow of the Colossus, .Hack// games, etc, they all work basically perfect. So it's really a flip of the coin. I do hope they someday offer a hardware based option to play those other games I am missing out on, (just for convenience so I don't have to switch between PS2 and PS3).

Anyway, it's cool be stoked and really like any console man. It's fine t show enthusiasm. I mean, I love my PC, PS3, Dreamcast, Gamecube, and SNES myself, and I've played the hell out of each. It's all about just respecting the other guys' console preferences enough to not force your opinion on them. Each side has the extremists on here, and each of it sucks, especially when this site is prime to have good conversations and debates, and in reality it usually just is a pissing match of insults and forced ideas.

In other words, It's cool to have a favorite console, and it's even cool to have debates about which is the best and why, but the moment things degrades to single line posts like " Hey, "X" game sucks, and so does "Y" console by default", that is generally where things go wrong, and what sucks about this site. While I would like nothing more then a MGS collection HD remake, I am pretty disappointed that BC is not coming to the newer and slim PS3s. I have an original 60GB, so I'm good for now. But there is always the possibility and fear (especially in this generation) that the system will one day die. And replacing it would be no easy task.

I was hoping that it would only have to last until a firmware update came along to fix this problem with all the other ps3's and I could upgrade it to a slim if and when the time came.

Everytime I read an article about someones 60GB dying, my heart drops a little knowing that one day it could be mine. That would crush me. I love my PS3 to death, but hope that the death part never comes.

Isn't the PS3 so much more powerful than the PS2 that it could just emulate the entire machine? I don't see why you need a different emulator for every game... just put an entire functioning PS2 into the firmware!

Hardware doesn't work that way. PS3s(Cell broadband engine) use a totally different hardware architecture than PS2s(Emotion engine.) Cell has better processing and graphics capabilities, but it's not made for the sole purpose of running PS2 games. The same thing could be said for the original Xbox and PS2. Xbox was more powerful than PS2, so why couldn't it run PS2 games too?

PS: Sony did put "an entire functioning PS2 in the firmware" in the 80GB BC PS3s. That's exactly why there are some PS2 games that run poorly or won't run at all on those; there's no PS2 hardware in it.

They blatantly said they have to look at things from a business standpoint first and just because their fans are used to having something in previous consoles doesn't mean they are going to have it in future ones.
Also stating multiple times how the only thing they care about it money.

No one wants to have to re-purchase old PS2 games. So him mentioning the option of PS2 games becoming $10 downloads on PSN is retarded.

You shouldn't have to re-buy something you've already bought.

The launch model PS3s had backwards compatibility. I have one. I also own a launch PS2, and surprise, surprise, my PS2 plays my PS2 games. Sony removed the BC when it became clear, through initial sales, that consumers preferred a lower price point over features.

If you're going to slam a company for something, please do your research first. The Wii is the first Nintendo home console to offer BC for Gamecube titles, and MS is hardly the poster child for BC.

PS3 owners with libraries of PS2 games don't have to purchase the HD remakes, provided they have a PS2. Tens of millions of gamers still own PS2s, and the PS2 is still being manufactured. The remakes are for those of us who have HD televisions and want the extra features (Trophy support, updated graphics, etc.) No one is being forced to do anything.

I choose to buy HD-remakes of certain PS2 games because I want that added experience.

They're updating older titles to provide PS3 owners with the chance to play those titles in HD with Trophies, etc., if they choose to.

You're not being made to re-purchase anything. Chances are, if you have a library of PS2 titles, you own a PS2.

Hell after 100 million PS2 units sold and still selling if your crying about backward capabilities on the PS3 then go troll some where else as you can easily find or buy a PS2.

I'd rather play old School PS1 and PS2 games with up to date graphics. If they keep the price just right they can make millions but become too greedy and I'll stick with software emulation.

Ico and shadow of the Collossus will be great in HD.

If you REALLY want a PS3 with backward compatibility, there are ways to get it, but you'll likely pay extra. I'm just saying if it really matters to you that much then you would have a 20g PS3 by now.

that includes konami,square enix,rockstar(if they are in it with Sony),and maybe even atlus or nis America? this thing has alot of potential. people keep crying about bc, but the reality is you should have gotten the ps3 at launch.the collections i know I'm getting day one are:

the sly collection(getting it Tuesday along with black ops.yeah i know causal fps but it's gonna be fun).

the team ico collection(i never played shadow of the colossus nor ico so you know i have to experience those two ps2 gems)

the prince of Persia collection(i miss the sands of time and that was the last pop game i played in like 5 years)

the splinter cell collection(i never played a single splinter cell game before lol)

i just know a kingdom hearts,mgs,and final fantasy ps2 collection is coming

Loved the GOW collection. Thought it was an excellent idea. Played all 3 games in a row and it was amazing!
Played the MOH HD remake, and boy did that game not age well. It really sucked lol. I only beat it or continued because of the trophies.

I really hope we see MGS 2,3. Devil May Cry 1,2,3. Onimusha 1,2,3,4 and GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas. Then i'll be a happy man.
Hell, it won't even hurt if they do a Max Payne 1 ,2 HD collection.
