^ I knew someone was going to mention Glide, haha. I think Mantle is a good idea in theory, but I wonder how much real world performance increase we'll get. Just because it handles extreme amounts of draw calls to the GPU as they have explained to us, does that mean an appreciable increase in FPS for anything more than the slowest of GCN cards? You better believe when Mantle-enhanced BF4 comes out I'll be checking the framerates before and after on my 7870. Something tells me Carmack ...

This has been the most popcorn-worthy console launch since SNES vs Genesis. Tell you what- the fillrate naysayers look to be right- the GPU gap is looking bad for MS. You'd think MS would have done a better job of checking up on their competition.

@blakOo

You beat me to it with that AMD link. GDDR5 is THE choice when building systems where graphics performance is the main objective. The title is click bait. I really shake my head at how some of these sites seem to be reaching for some nonexistent controversy a month from launch.

Seems this article is old news and the headline is click bait, no? Didn't the quote from baker refer to Microsoft's discomfort with using GDDR5 over DDR3 due to supply-chain related cost and power consumption? Not sure why they're trying to use Baker's interview from weeks ago to try and stir up something new. This quote is NOT from a third party dev, and it's not even being quoted in the right context.

Crazy...hopefully 5 years into this gen when someone makes a game that pushes 100GB we'll have direct fiber in our homes to download it in some reasonable amount of time.

Agree- just like sub-720p was the status quo for console games this gen, sub-1080p will be the status quo for the next, probably with a few first party titles that push 1080p at a decent framerate (maybe even 60? But I'm skeptical). At least this time around we'll get decent anti-aliasing as mostly standard.

"PC Gaming is not at 2500x1600 on a 399$ machine..."

I have both a PS3 and a gaming PC that runs BF3 at 1080p60 with almost everything maxed, and that's with the framerate capped at 60 to prevent tearing- without the cap it runs at ~100fps. It cost $600, which is about what most people will be spending at launch for their PS4/XB1 including games and accessories.

People need to stop implying that PC gaming is some unreachably expensive plateau fo...

IF they pull this off and come up with something almost as accurate and responsive as a mouse, we might see something similar come standard with the Xbox Two and PS5 -- this would be a game-changer if done correctly.

Totally. My gaming rig cost about what an Xbox One will cost after tax, and I spent almost half the cost of the machine on the GPU. It's proving capable of next-gen graphics and didn't cost a ton like everyone says a capable gaming PC should cost.

This is awesome news both from a BF4 and an ATI gpu standpoint because cheaper cards can be more efficient going forward. Would not at all be surprised if we saw a similar announcement from Nvidia soon.

I own both a PS3 and a gaming PC that cost under $600 and are hooked up to the same 720p HDTV. I don't understand the argument that "for the price of a console, you can't get a PC that will perform on par with next gen consoles". I think this is false- most people are probably going to spend on the order of $600-650 when they go get their PS4 or XB1 at launch, and my gaming machine runs BF3 with everything on ultra at over 100 fps average using an HD7870 and 8GB of RAM which...

I'm more excited for CS:GO than any other title this year, and it's great to see them sticking to the CS fundamentals. In CS, there's no ADS because you can crouch for better accuracy and to make yourself a smaller target. And there's also no aim assist, so it takes time to master mid to long range with smg's and rifles- that learning curve is also what makes it satisfying. I also think there's no ADS because CS is also about the strategy and objectives, and the balanc...

They had me ready to buy it on launch day until I watched the gameplay videos and it looked, sounded, and felt just like MW2. I'm voting with my dollars. If I do buy the game it'll be for no more than $30 used after launch. Honestly, why support a publisher who's giving us the same game with a new coat of paint over several other developers who are innovating and bringing us something fresh.

The solution to keeping online gaming fun is the MUTE button.

Never been a huge fan of ID games, but always admired Carmack's approach to adding value in the gaming industry. This comparison just earned even more respect from me- when he said they would be the same, he really wasn't just saying that as the default PR move.

Also, for all the tech heads out there, here's a presentation about ID Tech 5 from one of the senior developers at ID from 2009- pretty fascinating IMO. These guys know what it means to innovate and think ...

These shots FINALLY do the consoles justice. Both versions look SICK. PS3 looks a bit crisper, but that's all in the minute details. Some might even prefer the softer look on the 360.

They shouldn't even be posting these screenshots. The game's framebuffer isn't drawn at 1080p, or even at true 720p per DICE's comments weeks ago. If you ask me almost NONE of the console screenshots nor most of the video clips that have come out prior to release are even worth looking at. If you can't grab the contents of the framebuffer or record direct from a component output on the back of the console, it's NOT an accurate representation of what the game looks like...

You guys probably shouldn't get worked up over this article at all.

Analysts and would-be analysts who are really just journalists are always painting in broad strokes and writing with an air of certainty about industries they don't fully understand. From an investor's standpoint, the best video game developers/publishers (or just the best businesses in general) are the ones that show the greatest growth and potential for continued growth. This guy isn't comme...

Ha, plenty of people on PSN use mics, and there are fewer mouthy kids shouting racial slurs on PSN. Live isn't the end-all, especially not for nearly the cost of one game every year just to have a party system.

I think you're right. Sounds like they are actually trying to keep killstreak whoring under control. The support killstreaks are pretty light action. The opposite would be a disaster.
