Don't think of the subject being "taboo" but think of it being something "taboo" in the videogame industry.
Also, Religion/sex/rape really isn't taboo at all in Japan in comparison to how westerners see it and I highly doubt it would be 'racism' since Japan is filled with Japanese people and very little foreigners in comparison to Canada or America.

Socom 4, Crysis 2, Dues Ex and Vanquish look to be the only good shooting games coming out for a long while..

Touhou? This is a recent shmup that came out and it's insanely popular. Shmup's are fun, and they're not past their prime.

The article mentions how it's bad that there's sega on the list, but when you see what sega got their award for, they deserve.... well they didn't but the developers of the games sure as hell do.
Valkyria Chronicles was one of the best games this gen, it deserves the award.
Although I'll admit I hate sega. (Bayonetta port, Yakuza Content, Raping Sonic, ect)

Boss fights (Check and Check)
More diverse mechanics (Check, especially Vanquish)
Cover mechanics do actually get boring, you know. (Check)
Better storylines (Check for Crysis, Vanquish doesn't need a story as far as I'm concerned)
