New York Times: HD DVDs Fall Like Dominoes

New York Times reports:

This comes after Warner Brothers, which had been issuing movies in both formats, decided to go exclusively with Sony's Blu-ray format. Variety also reports that retailers may also put pressure on Universal and Paramount to back Blu-ray. Last summer, Blockbuster decided to go with Blu-ray only.

So what appeared to be a stalemate may, with one relatively small move by Warner, now turn out to be a quick victory for Sony. The fight between the systems has hurt studios, electronics makers and consumers. And I suspect a winner - any winner - will be welcomed by all sides (except Toshiba and Microsoft, a key partner).

Of course, one reason for the standoff is that there are real merits to both sides, as many of the comments to our post on Warner's move expressed.

For now, if you actually want a copy of a movie that you can count on playing in the future, it's rational to buy one in a format supported by all the players in the industry, and one that exists in three dimensions. The seeming triumph of Blu-ray only makes that easier and safer.

What you need to remember, is that the public will hear the medias side of it, and if the media is saying stay away from HD DVD, blu-ray is the winner, the people will opt for blu-ray over HD DVD. Expect HD DVD sales to slowly begin to decline now and the gap between the 2 formats will widen, it will be interesting to track nelison numbers over the next few weeks aswell

without mentioning the Playstation 3, and you can't have a Playstation 3 story without mentioning Blu Ray.

some of you guys need to get over that, and accept that Blu Ray is a part of gaming as much as it is a part of movies and storage media (i can't wait until i can get an affordable Blu Ray burner, and when the 200gb Blu Ray discs become available en masse, so i can backup my *ENTIRE hard drive on *ONE Blu Ray disc).

i saw this coming a year ago: the media's sudden embrace of Blu Ray and Playstation 3, despite the complete and utter trashing both have received for the past two years.

typically bias sites like 1up and Gamespot are kind of left with their d*cks in their hands, because they have no choice but to say positive things about Sony and the PS3, and Blu Ray lately. i mean, what else *CAN they do? Sony was right. about pretty much *EVERYTHING (except for taking rumble out of the Dual Shock):

HDMI - yup. right about that
Hard Drive standard - yup. right about that
Blu Ray drive - double yup, as games like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank are over 16gigs, and Blu Ray has won the format war.
1080p gaming - yup. right about that too.

you'd think, after Sony was right for putting CD in the PS1, and DVD in the PS2, that folks would have given them the benefit of the doubt for putting Blu Ray (or *ANY HD storage media, honestly), in the PS3. but *NOOOOO, haters hate, and logical people saw it as excellent foresight on Sony's part, if not an *INCREDIBLY risky maneuver. a risky maneuver that has just recently *PAID OFF big.

it'll be interesting to see how the Blu Ray victory affects sales of the Playstation 3. you know, the console that has had a Blu Ray player *BUILT INTO the machine from the *START.

This has already increased PS3 sales at my Target. We can no longer keep the PS3 in stock now, but before we always had a plethora in the stockroom. I work the electronics counter, and today alone, I have received 14 calls asking if the PS3 was in stock. (Yes, I count them.) Of course, I had more calls about the Wii... but this came as a surprise to me. The media was quick telling the public about Blu-Ray's status over HD-DVD.
