Review: Ys: Oath in Felgana (New Gamer Nation)

Ys: The Oath in Felghana might look like a JRPG, but at a nice and low price point it’s actually one of the best purchases a budget minded hack and slash fan could probably make. It’s a translation of a port of a remake of a remake of the third entry in the Ys series, an action RPG series that never quite hit it off in the States the way Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest did. Ys III: Wanderers from Ys was often considered the black sheep or the Zelda II of the series, but it was all over every 32 bit console you remember, and many you probably don’t. It’s got a lot of traditional JRPG elements, particularly in terms of graphics and storyline, but there’s a lot of atypical elements in here as well, like the battle system.

A Look Back at the Ys Series on PlayStation Handhelds

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "The PSP was blessed with multiple entries and this support continued onto the Vita, with remakes, ports, and a brand new title releasing over the course of the handheld’s life. It made the franchise a perfect choice for this series of articles, because although the series' future definitely isn’t on Sony’s handhelds at this point, it still had some brilliant representation over the past 12 years.

So in this article I’ll be looking back at a history of the franchise on Sony’s handhelds, from its origins on the PSP right through the latest release on Vita, with an emphasis on the quality of the ports to the handhelds as well as any sales figures that are available, alongside a conclusion of how well the franchise has done on the platforms."

Oath at Fhelgana, Seven, Memories of Celceta and Lacrimosa of Dana are amazing games. I adore the Ys series, and Adol is one of my favorite JRPG characters ever.

Ys: Oath in Felghana Thoughts | PS Vita Reviews

PS Vita Reviews recently went back to take a look at the Ys PSP games. Having already been through Chronicles, they have just finished up Oath in Felghana. With that, here are their final thoughts on the game, from the perspective of the PS Vita and PlayStation TV:

"Ys III came back to the gaming world as Oath in Felghana on the PC as well as the PSP in style. On the downside, the game has some awkward control combinations and the presentation was degraded on the transition to the Vita. However, this is the version with the most content and offers a lot of fun and fast battles. Any Action RPG or Ys fan should definitely give it a try. "

I played one on SNES and one on Vita. Pretty good. Not great but good. I'd take a crack at another on Vita.

This one is pretty hard, the last boss will burn your thumbs off.

Will probably play. Celceta was a really generic experience, but at least I can say it was pretty well polished.

This game is absolutely amazing. Hard but amazing. Anyone interested in JRPGs play this game but be ready for a challenge.
