Surviving the first two hours of Silent Hill: Downpour (Destructoid)

Wesley Ruscher: "Silent Hill: Downpour is Konami's latest attempt at reviving the surreal feeling their series was once known for. Let's face it: the franchise has been off its stride with its past iterations, but after getting some hands-on with Downpour I think I might just need to play this one with a friend on the other end of my headset."

A lot of demo previews are calling this game a pile of fail cause it's 'linear' but I was watching the preview on G4 with the directors and as far as I can tell from the creators themselves, it's an open world game simliar to Arkham City where you can go anywhere to explore and you have a variety of side quests too. It's got a robust survival system for weapons and the inventory system is redone. I think it looks cool. Graphics are decent but we are in a need for something scary. It makes me think it's feel the void of Alan Wake's turn for linearity.

They were calling this game a pile of fail because back in September this game was truly shitty (since it was to be released a month later).

So far all the previews I've read said this game has been much improved since then, and are actually excited for Downpour now.

That said, I don't think the game will be completely open world.

agree or not, but I love linear games more than open world

WildArmed4583d ago

Aye, direction is never a bad thing.

I'm not saying I don't love Open world games.
I'm just saying if I categorize all the games I love, most of them would not fall into 'open world'.

Hard to do an open world survival horror game. Linearity works best for this genre. However, I'm much looking forward to this game. And the HD Collection comes out the same month a this! Good time for Silent Hill fans regardless how this one turns out.

sounding like it could actually be good... but they have to nail the creepy atmosphere.

Dead Space and Dead Space 2 were "linear", so what? Those games were great, great I tell you!

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!
