Top 10 Underrated Horror Games

GP: "Horror in games has gone through some interesting changes over the years. Starting out as simple haunted house adventures (Haunted House and Sweet Home), horror games seemed mostly to stem from ideas formed in movies. As time progressed horror grew into its own massive genre thanks to the likes of Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil. Once it was known horror could be a very successful genre for games they were everywhere. Over the past few years horror has moved more toward the 'action' side of the spectrum.

Of course, there are still games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent which attempt to buck that trend. Even if you're not a horror fan you still probably know many of the titles: Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dead Space, and others. In the spirit of Halloween, here's a list of some horror games which have rarely gotten a chance in the spotlight."

Condemned is the most underrated/under-appreciated scary game ever imo.

I'm not scared by films or games usually but Codemned sense of dread is horrific.

Still, compared to Amnesia it's basically Disney.

I liked Codemned 2 as well. It wasn't as terrifying as 1 but I loved the idea of the rabid bear and the parts in the bowling alley were one step at a time for me.

indeed, Monolith is very talented when it comes to laying on the atmosphere.

i sincerely hope they have Condemned 3 in the works.

they have been super quiet as of late.

I salute this article for reminding me of own Phantasmagoria and Tecmo's deception back in the day.

Condemned is underated mainly because it was a 360 launch game and many people have not even played it.

IMO though..you havent played the scariest horror game until you play through the original Fatal Frame late at night with the sound turned up..period

Sanitarium is amazing, one of the best adventure games ever. Anyone who hasn't played it should get it from http://www.gog.com/en/gamec... it's only $9.99 and so worth it.

A scary game I liked quite a bit was Clive Barkers Undying. At the time it had some of the best sound design around and if you were lucky enough to have a 5.1 PC set up it would scare the crap out of you as you would often be exploring some creepy area hearing these horrifying monster sounds in the distance and then out of no where you would be attacked.

Visually the game hasn't aged to well but the sound design is still great. I still load it up every now and again.

Sometimes it's worth taking a risk. We don't yet know if Remedy will succeed, but FBC: Firebreal is definitely one of the most interesting co-op games currently in development.
