Insomniac Games is responsible for two of the PlayStation 3's most impressive titles in Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction. VideoGamer.com caught up with Brian Hastings, Chief Creative Officer at Insomniac, to discuss the studio's games, the power of the PlayStation 3 and new IPs.
VideoGamer.com: Looking ahead, a sequel to Resistance seems a given considering its success. Are there more new IPs to come from Insomniac or are you content with Ratchet and Resistance alternating over the years?
Brian Hastings: We're always evaluating new ideas for IPs and we want to continue making new games. But it's also a big risk and a big investment any time you do something new, so when you manage to have a hit game, like Ratchet & Clank or Resistance, you want to develop it and explore it. We're definitely going to be making new games, and hopefully we'll do it even more often than we have in the past. But we also want to continue the story arcs of the franchises we've created, so it's a matter of finding the right balance.
Sony is in the middle of an FPS crisis, but bringing back two much-loved PlayStation shooters could easily be the solution.
I honestly don't think we'll be seeing these anytime soon, if ever. Insomniac is officially on Marvel duty since it seems that all they're working on based off the leaks, and Horizon is more of what the casuals want these days. And I now I'll get a bunch of disagrees, but keep in mind that Resistance last got a game on the PS3 (2011) and Killzone was a launch title for the PS4 (2013). 10 years is a long time to make a game, if had any interest they would've done it by now, add InFamous to that list.
Resistance 3 turned me off to the series but I’d love a reboot. KillZone I think can stay dead. Give me a new Resistance like 1or 2 and I’ll be happy.
I honestly never cared or liked killzone. Huge resistance fan though. I remember so many nights playing melee only on USS Lexington, and I like the alt history vibe.
The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.
Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!
The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer
Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱
While it's been on ice for as long as it was around, the Resistance franchise has no shortage of quality.
My take:
Single player
3, 2, 1
Multiplayer
3, 1, 2
Overall
3, 2, 1
I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.
Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.
I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2
Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.
New IP would be swell. Or at least an attempt for a PSN Title! ;o
[But hey, It's insomniac: the team that never sleeps]
While I'll take a new IP from Insomniac any day. I'm more curious to finish the story arcs started with Ratchet & Clank: Future, and Resistance.
I agree RFOM and R&C are two freat games...and im always up for those games...Insomniac does no wrong in my book..!!
They're easily the best developers in the game... I'm a huge fan of theirs and anyone who dare buys their games used from a blockbuster or a gamestop needs kicked in the tip of their D*CK.
Ratchet & Clank bombed in Japan and America. ROFL
