Battlefield 3 ships with 9 maps, all maps support all 5 game modes

DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 3 will ship with 9 maps, and all 9 maps will support all 5 game modes.

Many will be getting 13 maps then with the "Back to Karkand" map pack. Considering the scale of battlefield maps I don't think there is any room for complains in this topic.

I'm also thrilled with the amount of weapons and equipment for BF3. They truly want this to be the best battlefield game to date considering the content they are bringing.

I remember an article way back where the site was reporting the first 2 confirmed maps and CoD fanboys were all over it criticizing BF3 for having "only" two maps.

That was some funny stuff. Mostly because they ignored how the article only did mention confirmed and not all.

Now we know there will be 9 beautiful maps to play in not counting Back to Karkand.

To those who complain that 9 maps isn't enough, you need to realize that it is 9 maps for each mode. Each mode will have a different version of each map: a Rush map will be set up completely different than a Conquest map (different areas of the map will be open or closed). Especially the new TDM mode where the map will be smaller and more infantry focused. It will be almost like having 27 maps. This will be different than COD where most modes (except specialty modes like Zombie or Spec Ops maps) are played on identical maps so a larger variety is needed .

But if you want to compete with CoD you need at least 40 maps. And lets not forget you also need 100+ pieces of DLC to make yourself comparable. You also need a subscription service that really shouldn't be there since most of the DLC will be finished by release of the game.

I almost never pre-order games - especially in this case as no one is sure how the console versions will turn out.

Great news... glad to see all maps get all modes. That was one of my gripes on BFBC2. The MP side of things felt limited since you only had a handful of maps for a mode like Rush. You ended up playing the same 4 maps (think it was 4) over and over.

The maps will be laid out differently depending on which mode you're playing, so conquest will be more spread out, with as many as 5 control points on a 64 player server. Judging by the alpha map, metro, rush will be similar to the bfbc2 rush maps, long and narrow.

I agree that 3 of Nam's maps were not very good for conquest, but Operation Hasting's and that other big one were good for conquest.

Now, am I happy about the accessibility for game types across BF3? Hell yes, it's the reason (or the lack thereof) BC2's VIP system sucked, and why Battlefield 3 will be awesome. Do I like the fact that people are suddenly ok with less than 10 maps standard? No.

Am I ok with it? Sure, that's ALL gametypes across all maps. My point is, people need to be consistent in their accusations. Either a low map count means a dev is lazy or it doesn't.

14-16 maps is great, but 3 weeks after release you'll only be playing on 7-9 maps because the others will end up getting skipped all the time.

As far as maps go, it's quality vs quantity, and we won't be able to judge that properly until after release.

As others have stated, the maps will be laid out differently depending on the mode, so 3 versions of each map certainly provides enough diversity.

Because you can get the Back to Karkand expansion for free, you're really getting 13 maps, with 3 versions = 39 maps.

Yeah, only 9 maps kinda sucks.... but then each one of those maps is about 3-4 times the size of a CoD map.

Hell, each of the individual areas of a Rush map on BFBC2 is larger than even the largest maps in CoD.

I'll take 9 massive maps over 10-12 tiny-assed maps any day.

Edit: And this is only talking about consoles. Nevermind the disparity between map size on the PC versions.

the maps are humongous. and each map (going by older BF titles) can be cut into different styles.

For example Arica Harbor in rush is vehicle intensive for first base, then it gets to CQC from second and onwards.

COD maps are the same. small and CQC.

Its double standards, everyone bashed perks but as soon as bad company 2 used them oh they werent perks they were "specalisations" oh yeah like modifiers that a player can customise that act without his control? yup perks.

Personally aslong as the 9 maps are all good I couldnt care about the low count but if it ends up only 2 or 3 are good that will be dissapointing but then again I already know all the back to karkland maps are going to be great!

This news isn't going to affect people who were for or against this game. If you want this game you're gonna get it, if you want MW3 you're gonna get it and nothing is going to change your mind as they are very different shooters. One is 30fps slower more tactical game, and the other is a faster paced 60fps twitch shooter. I don't know why people even argue about which is better as they are very different.

A Map on a battlefield game is more than just a map its a battlefield which is cut down into smaller parts except for on conquest where it goes all out. This allows the game to change its pace and style all by allowing access to different areas at different times. I'm good with 9 large maps on release and I'm sure dice will add more as free dlc.
