Here we go again: Are sequels and re-releases indicative of an industry losing its edge?

From Deeko:

"One glance at a list of upcoming games over the next few months, or even years, shows that there's money to be made in sequels. PGR4, Halo 3, GTAIV, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero III, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, and any number of new Singstars are all either here or are out there on the horizon. Look even further out and you'll find Far Cry 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Street Fighter IV, Fable 2 and many more. So what does this say about the industry?"

Actually, we had pretty good number of new games this year. From top notch titles like BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Zack & Wiki and Rock Band to others like Jericho, Conan, BlackSite, Stranglehold and Dewy's Adventure.
For the sequels, the article should have mentioned Mario Galaxy because it's kind of sequel IMO.

Also, Zelda 2 wasn't bad. It was just different...

I think sequals are vital, merited and remakes are only good in the case of a game that is worthy like FF7. An enhanced port at the begining of a new generation ninja gaiden sigma for example helps to fatten a consoles library so can also be a good thing.

Final Fantasy Sequals except for X-2 are all original storys really as well and the combat systems often change. A lot of these old IP's have been said to be ending as well Halo Trilogy done. MGS4 Snake is old and not going to be around much longer.(though I know such IP's will spawn more games using there universe etc.)

If somethings done right a proper sequal I don't mind at all. Spin-offs most times I do not agree with though.

Its kinda silly that peopole stupidly consider FF games sequels to their previous iteration in the series. FFX-2 is a sequel.
like i've said before what square enix do is equivalent to what bioware do, its just that they name many of their games Final Fantasy.
You could effortlessly find all the similarities in bioware rpgs; Neverwinter, Icewind dale, Baldurs gate. kotor Kotor 2, mass effect

I look at the tag Final fantasy as being equivalent to a genre in itself. When you think bioware rpg you know what you're gonna get don't you? but it isn't the exact same game. same with rockstar games. With squeenix they have 2 logos Squeenix and Final fantasy. Gotta think about it why when you think "ooohh bioware rpg" do you get excited as much as you do? cause you know what they've done before and you know they're gonna something similar but on a larger scale a different setting, and with newer elements to the mould.

whenever people say "ohh if you stuck the tag FF14 onto lOst odyssey and blue dragon it would sell" these kids obviously dont know what ff fans come to expect from the genre of Final fantasy; they expect the same kinda dedication to game quality as bioware fans do. Maybe if lost odyssey had come out on the ps2 instead of FFX...but still its missing that certain quality that hits you as soon as you see a trailer. If you watch the FF13 and versus trailer you'll know what i mean, or you wont lol.

As long as there is a healthy supply of quality new games as well, (Which there is) it means that things are going well. Other than Tony Hawk's proving ground, I don't see a game on that sequel list that's personally unappealing to me. When an original is very good or great, and you can make a better sequel, then it would be a crime not to do so imo.
