IGN - Top 100 SNES Games [20-1]

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the SNES, we've assembled our picks for the Top 100 SNES games of all time. Our criteria were simple – quality upon release, originality, replayability and impact upon the industry. After fighting with each other over a span of weeks and many, many hours, we managed to dig through our childhood memories – and modern Virtual Console experiences – to arrange our ranking. No doubt you'll have some disagreements. That's why we have comments.

Keep it cool, Koopalings.

a link to the past may just be the best 2d game ever the game is so rich so endorsing and best of all so so fun

DarkCharizard_5010d ago (Edited 5010d ago )

IGN just committed some blasphemy right there. Super Metroid wasn't #1..!! And DKC2 ranks SO LOW!!

But otherwise its a good list and the top 6 were expected.

super metriod was amazing but it just didn't do what zelda done for me but i agree with dkc2

WombBat5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

Id put super metroid somewhere in my top 10 but for me, chrono trigger, zelda:ALTTP, FFVI, Super Mario world, street fighter 2 turbo, megamanX, super punch out, and terranigma were more memorable.

personally id put chrono trigger number one, but a link to the past being number 1 doesnt bug me because its a masterpiece.

Where was terranigma anyways, such a great game.

Link to the past definitely was the pinnacle of SNES gaming, for me it was a toss up between that and Chrono Trigger and if either was first I would be happy as long as the other was second. I actually agree with this top 20 with the top 5 being 5 of my favorite games and I have played and loved most of the other 15 (especially mario RPG and mario kart).

I wouldn't mind seeing either a Super Metroid remastering or remake for the 3DS.

Venoxn4g5009d ago

I would like it in 3D classics 3DS :) and Fusion with Zero mission

browngamer45009d ago

Link to the past for the win! Seriously those are some heavy frickin hitters right there..I think i'll bust out my old Snes and play Super Metroid today!

Tikicobra5009d ago

A Link To the Past, even now, is beautiful and fun to play. It deserved its place.

Capt-FuzzyPants5009d ago

I think FF 2/4 should have been higher than #14.

The Dreamcast was the biggest gamble and way ahead of its time.

I wish we lived in the Alternate Timeline where Sega was still a dominant force in the console space and it hadn't been Microsoft.

Deeeeznuuuts1d 15h ago

I've always said this, would much prefer SEGA, such a shame.

blacktiger1d 8h ago

this was all part of the plan to give Microsoft the spot

Would be interesting to see what they would do for a modern console.

Saturn was a fantastic piece of kit... they just went a little too ambitious with its dual CPU setup. which turned a lot of developers off (at the time). The homebrew community have done some amazing work many years later, thanks to multichip experience. It is still the best platform for arcade fighters and shmups of all time. Dreamcast is a close 2nd though.

Profchaos2d ago

Yeah it was a interesting decision especially when looking at how dual CPU is considered a root cause of why the Jaguar was a failure.

Also the hardware rendered four sided polygons where the standard was three if they kept with triangle polygons I feel the systems development would have been easier to work with and we would have seen more third party ports in the west.

I think it was a victim of its time more than anything it saw huge success in Japan but the leadership and internal turmoil in the west meant games were not getting localised along with a focus on arcade like games were the PlayStation and later the N64 were pushing more in depth experiences over coin munching high score driven games.

I still enjoy my Saturn it was the first console I mowed lawns for and saved up for to purchase. I went so far as to purchase a used Saturn to run off an SD card. I even have a second Dreamcast modded to run off an SD card as well.
