Amnesia dev discusses success; next project won't lose the 'scary atmosphere'

Thomas Grip, project manager at Amnesia: The Dark Descent developer Frictional Games, spoke on "Evoking Emotions" earlier this week at GDC Europe, and explained the intricacies of the game that absolutely terrified those who played it. We wanted to discuss his emotions on the success of the game, which has sold over 400,000 copies --- an impressive feat for an indie dev.

"While we were quite confident that we had a game that was better than any of our previous, we had never expected the response we got," Grip told us when we asked if he was surprised by the success. "The press response was very nice -- both in terms of coverage and grading -- but even more fun and surprising was the player response that continues almost a year after. The amount of videos, images, etc. that players have created in response to the game is just amazing, and several orders of magnitude larger than anything we have had. Sales-wise it's, of course, also overwhelming, and I think especially how good it is still selling even a year after."

Loved Penumbra have yet to play Amnesia, looks good.

floetry1015054d ago

Oh man, you must. Penumbra was great, brings back plenty of memories, but Amnesia is on another level. Frictional deserve every good fortune they get. Despite the controversy surrounding Valve's "potato-sack" idea, I'm glad it came good for so many small developers.

Sidewinder-5054d ago

I bought the potato sack.

What was this juicy controversy?

Ser5054d ago

I cannot wait for the next title. I'll support Frictional Games until the day I die.

This might sound scandalous, but I prefer Penumbra to Half-Life.

Pyscho_Mantis5054d ago

there has been a lack of scary games this gen (discounting mods)

Genghis5054d ago

Man, please port Amnesia to consoles. It's the perfect in-the-dark w/ surround sound up w/ friends game. Playing on a big screen would be amazing.

Ser5054d ago

I would buy it again. Heck, I'd pay $60 for it.

Bring it, Frictional Games!

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

ModsDoBetter777d ago

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

DeathTouch777d ago

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.

gold_drake776d ago

omg that game freaked me out haha

Abnor_Mal776d ago

One of my favorite games, would love to see a remake.

gold_drake776d ago

i still think Haunting Ground is one of the best.

People that have played it, is it worth the price? I’m thinking of purchasing

MadLad1558d ago

Wait for a 50% off sale, honestly. It's not a bad game by any means, but it doesn't live up to their original Amnesia, let alone a game like SOMA.

coolbeans1558d ago (Edited 1558d ago )

I've heard mixed things about it. If you're heavily invested in Frictional's storytelling streak? Rebirth SEEMS like one of the best you'd get out of a game in 2020. Gameplay and some level design is where fans appear disappointed.
