Why THQ was right in cancelling Red Faction

So after a ten-year life-span Volition's Red Faction series has been cancelled and won't continue in any meaningful way, so why is THQ right in cancelling the series?

.
THQ is losing money...something has to give. I find it hard to believe that they are launching new products/Ip's and a IP like Red Faction is being relegated to what appears maybe some sort of casual app/ios type of scenario.

There is some talented people at Volition and it's not like they are closing down the dev so maybe it will be revisited in the future.

More and more, you are beginning to see a lack of vision in the industry as creative directors become more and more in short supply. You need visionaries to fuel these games and if all you do is try to copy other games, you will ultimately fail as your game has no soul.

yen8885080d ago

Totally agree, if something is losing you money, you are going to cut it off

Heartnet5080d ago

yeh :) however i hate when they shut down talented developers if a high qulaity game doesnt sell well..

Luckily that aint happening here :)

TomInc5080d ago

Totally agree with Inside Out. It's a bit of a shocker that one of their strongest IPs has just been put on the back bench.. That said, Saints Row and some of the newer IPs look promising, so with a bit of luck - funnelling the teams behind the RF series could help give them the boost they need.

JsonHenry5080d ago

The headlines next year will read "Red Faction rises from the ashes like a pheonix! New screens inside!"

Disccordia5080d ago

Of course the main reason is so they can free up funds for InSane.

RF Guerrilla = genius.
RF Armageddon just looks average at best. Multiplayer was killed as well.

I doubt they are killing it. They are just putting it on hold until they get a new game engine. Its not the money. They have the doe. Its not that its losing much money. I believe since any release window their current/old plan was for next Red Faction game would of set its release around 2012. Likely it would release for PC, PS3, X360, Wii U. Perhaps they want to wait and release it on all the next generation platforms though. I believe this is most likely reason. Could be peer pressure to be on par or better than other games on the market.

THQ is not a genius at game development ideas. I can see why they lose money. Just look at WWE. Its got how many new titles in the past 4 years. Legends of Wrestlemania, some car crashing game, Some kinda Mortal Kombat like fighting game, Some oddball cartoony game.

I still like THQ though they do have quality titles under their helm. Just makes me sad to see them cast one or two of them aside.

ThanatosDMC5078d ago

Exactly, it's their fault for taking steps back after RF:G.

It's their game, Why wouldn't they have the right. Who is to say they won't reboot the franchise at a later date?

Foxgod5080d ago (Edited 5080d ago )

Boring franchise, they should come up with a new franchise that is based on destructible environments.

The concept got a great potential, it must be well executed however, for it to succeed.
Maybe the next gen will be better suited for games based on full destructable environments, if the next gen wont cut on memory that is.

Dart895080d ago

If they want it to succeed again they need to go back to the roots of the 1st Red faction.

Cpt_kitten5080d ago

they kinda did though the mutant enemies from the first game are the enemies in the newest

Cpt_kitten5080d ago

no, excellent games, excellent story

if only games could get past being closed minded and stop complaining about every little thing when a developer says there changing something and explain there very understandable reasoning for it and if reviewers weren't being biased all the time things would be different

It would be a perfect time with the huge leap in cpu power these consoles have over previous generations

porkChop870d ago

Yes please. Guerilla was a great game. The destruction in that game is still better than most. Maybe Volition can go back to it and let Saints Row rest for a while.

Vengeance1138870d ago (Edited 870d ago )

Yes! More players young and old need to play and respect the franchise that literally invented destructible environments!

BlaqMagiq1870d ago

Would love a REAL Red Faction 4 (the one Volition REALLY wanted to make and not Armageddon) or a Red Faction 1 remake.

An intro to Biomutant

Alex & Mike talk Biomutant, a game from Experiment 101/THQ Nordiq you likely have not heard of. While the AAA side of the industry tends to homogenization and imitative, cinematic presentation, “AA” games remain creative and innovative in 2021. Drawing on inspirations as varied as Dark Souls, third person shooters & kung fu cinema, Biomutant is Ratchet & Clank on acid, developed by a team of 20 people.

Wouldn't mind a Remake of the first Red Faction game, I enjoyed that game quite a bit.

TheProfessional1870d ago

Red Faction 1 is an all time classic and the Geo Mod destruction system was way, way ahead of its time.
