Call for sanity: Stop spending money on limited editions, cat helmets (Bitmob)

I don't know, I really enjoy some of the limited editions I buy, with the most recent being the halo reach legendary edition. I've got a job and the extra money, so spending on limited editions for game franchises I really admire is no big deal for me.

exactly...if person(s) like the limited editions then thats there choice to buy it...not like we are getting forced to buy them and when we do buy them, we usually have a reason why we did

I enjoyed reading this article and I lived by it since I purchased my last worthless, limited edition, "Batman: Arkham Asylum". Most limited/special edition are just paperweights such as Halo 3, Batman AA, Duke Nukem, AvP, Fable 3, Halo Wars, Killzone 3, etc.

However, I have a few limited/special edition games, such as BlazBlue CT, Dead Space 2, Demon's Souls, & Mass Effect 2 that are worth it because their extra value comes back as physical soundtracks and/or extra content. Plus, they're not that much more expensive and my limit is $80 for limited/special edition and I better like what I'm getting. Additionally, Battlefield 3, Rage, and Dark Souls upgrade to limited versions for free when preordering, that's nice too.

PS. I purchased Bioshock 2 Special Edition today, for $31 and that's a great price for the game, artbook, vinyl and cd version of the soundtrack.

Agreed with the BlazBlue SE. I've listened to the soundtrack more than I've played the game that came with it.

I love Taokaka's and Bang's Theme the most. So Much ENERGY! Plus the remixes by DJ Oh No are amazing.

The best ever Limited Edition game I bought so far was Alan Wake. It came with a book, plenty of extra content and the crown jewel was in-game developer video commentary.

As you played the game, the developer would pop up a small window in the corner and discuss that particular scene. How awesome is that?

That said, I'm a sucker for LE and tend to buy them. The good news, is I tend to wait until they fall in price. Got the Halo: Reach Legendary Edition for $60-70 and Halo 3 Legendary for a mere $40.

Some of them actually increase in price. I have a sealed copy of Mass Effect LE (in fact I had two, but sold one for around $300+). I think recently they have been going for $600+.

However, I don't know if I can wait on Gears of War 3. Might have to splurge on Epic Edition... Hope they come with an LE console. I would be all over that to the detriment of my wallet!

There are definitely some Special/Limited editions that are totally worth the extra scratch. Behind-the-Scenes DVDs are my crack.

I waited to long for Duke Nukem i need to get the Balls of Steel edition. But some of them suck and others are really good.

I'm happily married and have my gaming collectibles on display in the living room for all to see.

I like the collectible stuff. I don't buy it to be hip or make myself feel cool, I genuinely like having tangible things in addition to playing an awesome game.

These items are for "collectors" of the games/series. If you are not a collector. Or do not care for it. Then don't buy it? Just a thought. I mean, it's out there for those that do care. Otherwise, just go buy the regular game like many other's do.

The Witcher 2 box is epic, also nice soundtrack plus developer dvd, map, coin, letter, strategy guide and regular manual, i too picked it up for $45

not to mention the witcher 2 is the best rpg i have played in 10 years and has better graphics than any game in the entire world right now....

I spent a whopping $170 CDN (import and shipping fees) for the Ultimate Collector's edition. It was totally worth it... CDPROJEKT deserves every pretty penny.

I think special editions are a money-making litmus test: They are designed to test how much we will pay for games, and every time anyone buys a special edition, they are increasing (by fractions of pennies) how much we'll have to pay for next-gen games.

Feel free to buy special editions for $70, but when you do it, realize that next-gen games will cost that much because it's been proven that people will pay that much.

The scale slides, too... If you like $70 to $80 special editions, expect to pay $100 to $110 next time around.

I got the limited edition of Fallout 3, with the lunchbox and bobblehead. I kept it a year or so then sold it on Ebay for over twice what I paid for it, minus the actual game which I kept. For that reason alone it was worth buying.
