Wedogames.net Socom 4 Review

For my second review this week I will be tackling Socom 4, the latest installment of the series from the guys over at Zipper Interactive. As a fan of the original titles for the PS2 and later versions on the PSP I was excited to hear about the decision to put a single player campaign back in the game. The last game named Socom: Confrontation was multiplayer exclusive and wound up being a huge disaster. Hopefully Zipper can catch magic in a bottle once more and wow all of us with a hit game.

You review a game known for multiplayer on the single player only. -Strike 1

You have numerous grammar and spelling errors, swear frequently, and call your readers morons at one point. -Should be 4, but I'll be nice, Strike 2

You put in 4.5 hours total with a game many will play 1000's and use the excuse of "I looked online and some other people had my problem too within this whole day I've had the brand new game" to justify yourself releasing a review of the full game. -Strike 3

Buddy, either learn to do it right or don't bother. You're only going to get barraged with hate now if you happen to make it out of "pending" status.

Adva4755d ago

Good job for exposing this crap piece called a 'review'.

BattleAxe4755d ago

The game sucks, get over it you guys. Its no accident that the Meta Score is down around 66 or 67. Personally I think Socom: Confrontation is a better Socom title, because its closer to what the series used to be.

GamerscoreWhores4756d ago

@skorp

it was meant to be funny. you need to calm down. if you don't like the review than don't read it. wedogames.net doesn't censor its review unlike other sites which is why i am proud of what i wrote and won't defend it to the like of you sir. good day.

skorp4755d ago

It's not "lack" of censorship that's the problem, it's lack of quality. Read what I wrote.

You needed to edit it further, play the game further, and you don't win any points by calling our readers in a sudden angry rage. Assuming your readers are idiots is never a good thing.

And you're welcome, the tips are free. Just some friendly advice I think you should heed in the future.

To quick swap your primaries quickly tap L2. Did you even play the game?

CraigBaker4755d ago

u call it quick swap, i call it a piece of shit.

Greatest game to ever exist, this would sell consoles for sure.

urgentfury3317d ago

I agree it would sell some consoles but I am not sure the numbers will be staggering enough. I do however think that the franchise should be revived and brought back to its roots.

Crimzon3317d ago

I can't speak of the roots of the franchise since I never played SOCOM 1 or 2, but was the last game on PS3 really that bad? I saw a lot of the fans of the older games speak poorly of it back when it launched, but as someone new to the franchise I thought SOCOM 4 was incredibly fun and enjoyable to play. I was really disappointed when Sony shut down the servers for that game.

I was really impressed with that game on a technical level as well. The gameplay was enjoyable enough, but the levels being so large, with complex geometry and so much foliage while letting 32 players run around with no lag was very impressive at the time, especially since the graphics were actually really good in my opinion.

It was frustrating to see Sony shut down Zipper Interactive. I guess their games weren't for everyone but I really liked MAG and SOCOM 4. Same goes for Sony Liverpool and Wipeout HD. Sad to see great developers like that gone and Sony use the money to fund rubbish like The Order instead.

Commodore3317d ago (Edited 3317d ago )

To Crimzon:

SOCOM 4 (We don't even consider it a SOCOM game) was so terrible, it was amazing that the game even got made with the amount of misdirection Zipper went with. Every previous SOCOM was based on 1 life, no respawn. That gave it the thrill and intensity that no other game has ever done to this day. It was a cluster **** of every current game at the time. Call of Duty and Uncharted mainly. Wall hugging? No thank you.

SOCOM 2 would still have it's core base but people today who can't handle waiting 5 minutes for the next round when they die. They do something stupid like rushing into a room and not working together as a team....and then they die.

morganfell3317d ago (Edited 3317d ago )

Compared to the other SOCOMs, SOCOM 4 was bad because the MP was completely different from previous titles and what people wanted was the gameplay they had previously enjoyed.

Confrontation turned out to be good but you wouldn't know it from some people. Persons that liked SOCOM 2 didn't like Confrontation because they played it for the first month or so then quit. It took 6 months and over 600MB of patches but eventually Confrontation had a really good SOCOM II vibe. Those that stuck it out or else came back to the game after that 6th month were pleasantly surprised.

The main thing missing from COnfrontation, and SOCOM III for that matter was the Breach mode as itr was never the same after II and it was my favorite game mode. Playing SOCOM II and Breach on Sujo or Sandstorm was a blast. But it was winning Breach mode as a SEAL on Enowapi that took the most skill.

Sandstorm: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

BattleAxe3317d ago (Edited 3317d ago )

It will never happen. I'm not sure why people keep kicking this dead horse. The Playstation Blog already had a petition with something like the second highest votes out of all the petitions on Playstation.Blog Share, and Sony didn't do anything about it back then. H-Hour is what everyone should be concentrating on right about now. Socom 2 was awesome, but it's time to stop living in the past, and start moving on with your lives.

Helix3316d ago

you all do realize HHOUR is coming out by Sofstudios

www.sofstudios.com

morganfell3316d ago

Yes, but despite the pedigree H Hour isn't SOCOM. If you look at the most recent vids it is quite apparent.

BattleAxe3316d ago

^^^

Well at this stage of H-Hour's development, what do you expect? And unless you've been playing the alpha, how can you talk about pedigree? Zipper was a well funded studio, whereas SOF Studios is just getting started.

Being a huge Ghost fan, I have always had an interest in playing the early Socom games. It was this and GOW that always caught my interest. Not big on Uncharted and Bloodborne or D'Souls (not saying those are bad games).

lilbrat233317d ago

I remember never sleeping playing this game on the PSP I wish they would also release a Vita version of this game. The online was epic.

ZombieKiller3317d ago

I would buy this again in a flash. I've been waiting for another really good Socom game. Where camping is legitimate instead of running around like a chicken without a head.

Sorry A.D.D. world, but camping IS A STRATEGY.

harbie3316d ago

Damn can't agree 1million times lol ;)>. Never before have truer words been spoken. SOCOM II is the greatest game of all time.

You can still play it today via Xlink, come join us, until SOCOM II HD finally comes out! :)

NO_FEAR3317d ago

This was the all time best game on any console at it's launch. It was a pivotal moment in console gaming history. Millions of fans enjoyed it and it formed bonds of friendships that survive to this day. It spurred the competitive gaming scene. A great game will always be a great game. This timeless remaster would be enjoyed again by old fans and new alike.

s2Celerity3317d ago

Still playing multiplayer on LAN through a PC application that connects ps2 ip's together. Cant believe it's been almost 12 years

harbie3317d ago

Xlink is the app if anyone is interested in playing SOCOM 2

HELVEG263317d ago

Yup Sony should bring back a Classic SOCOM, its still sorely missed by thousands even after all these years. There is a lot of money to be made for them if they get it right. This game sold consoles!! Always a deciding factor in the past when choosing between a PS or XBOX.

s2Celerity3317d ago

No doubt in my mind this would sell consoles. It's the most addictive experience out for almost a decade now.

OUROSMAG3317d ago

Wasn't the studio behind SOCOM shut down?

s2Celerity3317d ago

Sony still owns the rights and has given it to another studio before as well. Anything could happen

Imagine if they made Dark Souls for casuals?

The franchise would never be the same after that.

Mutant-Spud3643d ago

Yeah and we casuals still wouldn't want to play it!

DCfan3643d ago

MGS is unfortunately going that route.

DCfan3643d ago

Everything about MGSV screams 'westernization'.
Its not like the game is not popular enough.
And did you forget Kojima's talk about westernizing MGO?

DanielGearSolid3643d ago

Personally, the game still feels like good ol' MGS, but with better controls, to me...

I don't think they're trying to "broaden their audience" per say... I feel like it's more taking elements from Western games that can fundamentally improve their game... But, thats just me

jeremyj29133643d ago

That's what Capcom tried doing last gen and look at them now.

SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4 and MAG servers shutting down in January 2014

Original-Gamer.com: "Sony has decided to shutdown the servers for SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4, and MAG in January 2014. SOCOM 4 and MAG were developed by Zipper Interactive while SOCOM Confrontation was developed by Slant Six Games."

Abash3938d ago

Very sad to hear, hopefully Sony continues SOCOM and MAG on PS4

BiggCMan3938d ago

MAG is not even too old yet, this doesn't make any sense. It's still fairly populated with the dedicated fans, even one of my friends recently got back into it. Hell even Confrontation has a pretty decent sized dedicated player base, I think only 4 is pretty deserted.

This really makes no sense, the games aren't old. They better be making new games in the future at least.

HammadTheBeast3938d ago

Come on now, MAG's pretty old, their new console is coming out, and there's only about 5000 individual players coming on every month, if that.

It's run its course, a fantastic game while it lasted. Hopefully, we can get a few massive battles in before the servers close, knowing the community, I expect it.

Also, a lot of MAG is on Dust 514 now, which isn't amazing, but is still alright.

kwyjibo3938d ago

It makes sense.

MAG is no longer selling, so Sony is making no money from it. In fact, it's costing them money to keep it alive.

Maybe with PS4 pay-for-online and microtransactions (read: ongoing support), you'll get a better service.

decrypt3938d ago (Edited 3938d ago )

@HammadTheBeast

"Come on now, MAG's pretty old"

No it isnt, you want really old check out:

Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1, Counter strike. Then tell me why those games are still running?

Sony closing servers to older games is just a tactic to force users on board their next console.

Its the nature of console gaming, too controlled with console gamers having little to no rights at all. Hell if Sony closes PS3 online services after PS4 launch there is nothing console gamers can do about it.

JAMurida3938d ago

MAG is barely alive now these days. Domination is only playable early AM hours (CST) when the JP players get on and that only last a few hours. Only thing going on is Sabo or Suppression.

Lucky to get an Interdiction or Acquisition going.

Utalkin2me3938d ago

Kind of ironic i recently put mag back in and got all the updates and restored all my skill points. And OMG i could not kill anybody for nothing, it was quite weird. I used to be beast at that game and i went negative for a few games before finally i quit. Felt like i was doing worse for the team then helping.

It wasn't very populated then, but hate to hear that.

BattleAxe3938d ago (Edited 3938d ago )

H-Hour is the new Socom. You can still support the development studio by way of Paypal, and you still get access to all of the Kickstarter rewards, but only until the end of the month.

http://sofstudios.com/index...

H-Hour is set to come out on PS4 and PC.

Corpser3938d ago

@all

MAG was released in 2010, just 3 years ago! You're telling me I should expect online servers to be around for just 3 years?

GasTankKiller3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

"It's still fairly populated with the dedicated fans."

You only see one side of this. Sony sees the stats of how many players are playing on average. No reason to waste server power for a handle full of people. Yes that handle full could be a few thousand but still.

From what I remember during MAGs development. Zipper was given a blank check and setup a server farm for MAG.

No reason to let all those servers go to waste. They will most likely use them for the PS4.

GameCents3938d ago (Edited 3938d ago )

Where's the outrage? They effectively saying that you've been renting MAG all this time. Online only games shouldn't have their servers shut so soon.

HammadTheBeast3938d ago

There's about 200 people on at any time now.... and most from the free demo.

Corpser3938d ago

^^

So? You're perfectly fine an online-only game that people are still playing will be shut down

JAMurida3938d ago

#Corpser

Yes there is a community, but a very small one. It's the same case with White Knight Chronicles 1/2. Both MAG and WKC I've played heavy enough to say they had a very small community that most likely didn't warrant Sony paying the money to keep the servers going for any longer. It sucks, but it happens when it's a case like this.

If anything, I'm more surprised that MAG is being shutdown much later than WKC was. IMO, it should of been the other way around.

Sitdown3938d ago (Edited 3938d ago )

Haha, some have no clue of exactly what you just did there. Or am I reading too much into it?

No_Limit3938d ago

In other news, the 2007 X360 online only game, Shadowrun, is still playable on its online server. This show where the priority is for both companies when it comes to online gaming.

Corpser3938d ago

MAG community is far from dead, why?

And no wonder GameStop has been selling the game used for $0.99. It's an online-only game too

fr0sty3938d ago

It's a shame, I enjoy playing MAG more than just about any other shooter out there. I know many do not agree, as it does have some very obvious flaws, but it's a gem of a game beneath them.

MidnytRain3938d ago

Whoa, a dollar?? Are you serious?

Gridloc3938d ago

That's the only problem I have with digital downloads and multiplayer only games. If they shut the servers down your screwed...

Ray1863938d ago

If it has a lan option you can always use x-link.

fr0sty3938d ago (Edited 3938d ago )

I would hope such a service would work for a game like MAG, enough of the community (that is already dwindling) would need to know about that capability, and actually be bothered to want to try using it in order for it to work. I think it's just going to kill the community enough to make the game unplayable, as MAG relies on very large matches.

SIRHC133938d ago

H-Hour. We need you. Deliver the tactical third person shooter goods that we deserve!

MoonConquistador3938d ago

And in a run up to a sequel they should be giving this game away free on PS+ at least, or just make it a free to play game. Its a game I always wanted to platinum but there are never enough people on for domination games etc

Great game though

MidnytRain3938d ago

I do think Sony is expecting PlanetSide 2 to fill the massive shooter niche.
