TGH: Tritton AX Pro Review

TGH Writes: "The Tritton AX Pro is an elite gaming headset from global accessories giant MadCatz. The technology behind the product is simple, smack four speakers into each of your ears for a total of eight and hope the gamer doesn’t go deaf. The speakers make for an authentic surround experience as each represents a section, front, left, right and back speaker for a complete surrounding experience. Does the experience live up to the hype or does it leave a faint whisper in your ear?"

If you're going to buy one of these make sure you get a good optical cable seperatly. The one they supply sucks.

ShadyDevil5153d ago

What's so bad about the one supplied? I haven't had any problems with it at all. I mean it is thin but if you take good care of it, I am sure it wont break unless an animal chews on it.

Echo3075153d ago

Yeah, besides, optical is powered by light. You don't need thick insulated cables for that. As long as it's covered, it's fine.

FAGOL5153d ago

My one is extremely loose compared to my Belkin one I had for years. It feels like it locks in better and unlike the 1 supplied it hasn't become loose. Just my experiance.

duplissi5153d ago

... you must be one of those gullable folks who think the 130 dollar monster hdmi cables actually give you better picture than the garden variety ones.....

if its a digital signal you CANT DEGRADE OR IMPROVE (impossible) the picture/sound as long as the signal arrives at its destination intact....

FAGOL5153d ago

Haha nope definatly not one of those people. Read my response above. The cable is too flimsy compared to my Belkin cable. That was only £10 and got it years ago.

RE_L_MAYER5153d ago

I returned it-the sound is poopi and you can never make it sound like you want because the midlle speaker which does high pitched sounds is too small so when someone screams in a game or a movie its disturbed sort of like a song with alot of base on a phone, from what ihve heard from a few friends "Astro A40 " headsets are wreally good but aren't cheap either unless you find a good deal on amazon/ebay or something

Echo3075153d ago

You can't get Astro's from anywhere but Astrogaming.com. Unless someone is selling them used (and buying used headphones you can't try first is a bad idea).

I had the AXPro's before I bought my Astro's and the sound was far from 'poopi'. It was actually quite good. I just hated the mic (sensitivity was set way too low) and the fact that you need so many cords.

I loved the A40's I got and they're well worth the money. Better sound and ease of use than the Tritton's.

Just recently I picked up the Turtle Beach PX5 and despite not liking my past Turtle Beach headsets, the PX5 is really blowing my socks off right now. 50mm drivers provide lots of pop and bass. Plus, basic sound aside, these headphones have every bell and whistle you can imagine. Even has bluetooth built in so chatting on the PS3 is super easy. No cords, whatsoever.

Now I just have to decide whether or not I want to keep the PX5's and ditch the A40's, or stick with Astro.

On topic: Having used just about every major console gaming headset out there, I don't think the Tritton's are worthy of a perfect score. BUT, they are certainly very good.

FAGOL5153d ago

Them PX5s sure look good. But isit worth it? I got AX Pros right now.

duplissi5153d ago (Edited 5153d ago )

wow... that hissing or distortion can be corrected by turning the input (on the decoder box) down.... its because the headset is receiving a signal that is too high..

i have the ax pros... sure its a pain in the ass to have to adjust that every now and then but once they are set up properly they sound fantastic.

edit: that speaker is actually the center channel not a tweater btw..... and it is identical to the front and rear speakers....

Boody-Bandit5153d ago

The only people a set like this is good for are those that graduate from TV sound to these gaming headphones. If you are use to a decent 5.1 or higher quality sound than spend the extra coin, get a decent pair of phones from Denon, AKG, Beyer Dynamics, Sennheiser, with the Astro mix amp, cheap headphone amp or a cheap to skys the limit sound receiver.

I have tried various gaming headphones and none of the measure up to even lower end versions from the companies I listed above.

I picked up a pair of Denon 2000's for $200 bucks online and they blow any gaming phones out of the box. Add a mixer and a cheap mic (like Zalman) and you're good to go.

duplissi5153d ago

the ax pros are fantastic for 3 dimensional sound.... i have not used a headset that gave me this level of spacial awareness in games and movies... and most of the reviews for the ax pros agree with this.

Tilian5153d ago (Edited 5153d ago )

This is what I use for gaming and BD:

http://www.amazon.com/Audio...

Used to have some Senns, but I wanted to move to a closed can. Got a good amp too (little dot): makes for aural heaven.

ShadyDevil5153d ago

You spent $615 on a headset... Thats a little excessive.

duplissi5153d ago

no not really... dont be so quick to judge, im sure you have some hobbies that seem outlandish to others.

once you get into high end sound its like an addiction (how good can i get it to sound...) you want to keep improving your sound.

to each his own right?

Tilian5153d ago

Audiophiles are commonly misunderstood. People will spend 1000s on a TV for the "visual experience" but ignore the "aural experience" with crap speakers/headphones.

If you're a lover of music, and you have good ears, you quickly learn to embrace quality speakers/headphones.

Plus, I'm no longer a poor student, and can afford it.

Astro A40 wireless ! Nuff said

ShadyDevil5153d ago

Being Wireless usually gives up quality when the battery is low. You cant have it on the charger 24/7 that would defeat the purpose of wireless. That is a completely inane reason to say 'nuff said'. I have no experience with Astro's line of headsets but the Tritton line of headsets are not 'simulated' surround sound like a few headsets out there. It is TRUE 100% 5.1 Surround sound.

Boody-Bandit5153d ago (Edited 5153d ago )

No ShadyDevil the Tritton headset is not simulated sound. What it is speakers smaller than what use to be in tiny cheap transistor radios.

As far as the Astro A40 you really should look into them and understand the tech behind them before commenting on them. Judging from your submission history I am going to go out on a limb and say you wrote this review. At the very least work for or possibly own the site that produced it.

I have tried the Trittons, Turtle Beach, Astros, Plantronics, Razer (etc and so on) and higher end cans like Denons, AKG, Sennheisers, Beyer Dynamics, etc and so on. Of the three most common gaming headsets (TB, Tritton and Astro), the current top of the heap overall are the Astro A40's.

(IMHO) TB's give you the best bass impact, AX Pro spacial sound but are thin in bass and bright/ slightly harsh highs, and Astro A40's are far and away the "current" best over all in one gaming headphones with the better mixer amp. Definitely best bang for buck in gaming.

Take it from someone that has tried them all and currently own none of them because I moved on to piecing a set together.

I am not an audiophile but a freaking electronic addict. Some of my sound setups cost more than luxury cars. With that and my gaming addiction I an in serious need of therapy.

With that said I would definitely choose Astro A40's over all the other "current" gaming headset options.

I am a sound junkie so I still personally prefer my Denons (only because I prefer closed cans to minimize sound leak and not to annoy the wifey at night) with a mixer and headphone amp. If I was to choose open cans I would go with Sennheiser 650's but only because I rarely use headphones so I don't see the need to spend a ton of money on them.

One thing I will add. I usually use my cans for most racing games regardless if my family is around or not. They add a different (not necessarily better, just different) level of immersion than my mid level stand alone sound systems. Throw in a tactile transducer, like a buttkicker, with a pair of cans? Forget about it!
