IGN: Crysis 2 - The Rock, the Hard Place and the PS3

The verdict? Not so great, unfortunately. The performance of the PS3 version is pretty underwhelming. The framerate is frequently low and choppy. There are jagged lines everywhere, and shadows are especially messy. There's a muddiness to the graphics that's hard to stomach, and worse, the variable framerate really hurts controller response.

MGRogue20175217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

Uh oh... IGN, What have you done... :O

shadowknight2035217d ago

Well Im now officially worried about the ps3 version..I might just pre order homefront instead.

BakedGoods5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

I was worried about this.

I'm cancelling my pre-order. I throw the credit onto LA Noire and play Dragon Age 2/Killzone till then.

MGRogue20175217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

Why not get it for the Xbox 360 instead then?

I'm getting both Homefront & Crysis 2 for teh Xbox 360. I would get one of 'em for my PS3... but well, you know.. I like to own the best looking & best performing console version of any multi-platform title I plan to purchase.

I love my PS3 but let's just face it.. The Xbox 360 version seems to be the one to go for when it comes to multi-platform titles on consoles.. Always.

jjohan355217d ago

That fucking sucks man. How disappointing. And I was hoping that the new Crytek engine would be the future for next gen consoles. It's following the footsteps of other lazy 3rd party developers.

Ducky5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

@eneki

Then you'd be getting them on PC.
+ You'd be getting Metro2033 and a kickass bandana for TF2... just for pre-ordering Homefront.

zootang5217d ago

Simple, won't properly support my console equals no support from me. Plenty of exclusives that my money can be saved for, done me a favour.

Pixelated_Army5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

Good lookin' out IGN. If true then an investigation needs to be done in order to see if MS is meddling with other platforms development.

Silly gameAr5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

@enkeiexpress.

Stop being a tool. We know what the PS3 is capable of. Crytek was talking all of that crap but couldn't deliver on the PS3 in the end.

It's the dev, not the system. Always has been and always will be.

@kaveti6616

Don't. I've been around long enough to recognize comments like his for what they really are.

BattleAxe5217d ago

I played the 360 and PC demos today, and I was really impressed with textures and the crispness of the PC version. The 360 version didn't look bad, and I thought that it looked marginally better than Modern Warfare 2. Now that it seems that the PS3 will be suffering from poor development, I'm probably going to buy this game on Steam. I might try the PS3 demo just for the sake of it, but I think I'm going PC with this one.

kaveti66165217d ago

silly gamar, did enkei say that it was the PS3s fault that Crysis 2 sucks on PS3?

MAJ0R5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

what was that you said about maxing all consoles Crytek?

and just so everyone knows Crysis 1 looks better than Crysis 2 on the PC, the PC demo is comparable to the console versions

Crysis 2 = huge disappointment

NiKK_4195217d ago

meh, wasn't gonna buy it anyway. might still try it on gamefly though...but that's about it

Lekumkee5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

Shame I was officially on the fence on getting this, this makes my decision alot easier. Saves me $65 for Dragon Age 2.

evrfighter5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

As a pc gamer. I can sit here and say I won't have to worry about it. That's the problem though. Because it doesn't affect me I overlook it. Crysis 2 is coming off more and more as an xbox cash grab.

The solution is simple. Don't support crytek. There's too many other games coming out across all platforms that could use the support.

The sooner you console gamers start giving lazy devs the finger with your wallets. The faster more quality titles come around.

Chromer5216d ago

Stop being an idiot. Crytek talked all the smack about being able to harness the power of the PS3 and they couldn't deliver. This is not the fault of the PS3 but the developers. God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Killzone 3, etc. already proven that in the right hands, games that cannot be matched by 360 can be made. Just because you like to believe the 360 can do the same, doesn't make it true.

BattleAxe5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

@ evrfighter

We do vote with our pocket books, thats why games like CoD and and Bulletstorm sell like hotcakes on the 360 and not on the PS3. I tend to support the PS3's first party games, because they tend to be the highest quality console games around.

BakedGoods5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

If the PS3 is so technologically inferior, why does Killzone 3/God of War 3/Uncharted 2 graphically own every exclusive 360 title or multiplat?

Boody-Bandit5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

evrfighter, it's a nice thought but that wont happen any time soon. Just look at Activision and the COD franchise. There is a lot of talk of boycotts but each new game breaks sales records over the previous installment. <- Which is plain sad.

@BakedGoods
You're wasting your time with paintsville. He is going to troll that account into the ground and just create another one. Just help him out by ridding him of his bubbles so he can start over a new.

DelbertGrady5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

The multiplayer demo plays great on my Xbox 360. Very fluid and the controls are very precise but I'm still more excited about Homefront. Just want to see how it turns out first.

Too bad for people who only own a PS3 and don't have a gaming rig. I hope Homefront is a bit better.

RatherHavaBigGirl5216d ago

@ FatOldMan

he said CONSOLES.

HolyOrangeCows5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

Yep, definitely getting Crysis 2 used. Crytech has proved to be massive liars about the quality of their console products, sub-HD and lacking real AA on both console versions.

IGN seems to be definitely making a big deal out of nothing, though. Several videos have released of the PS3 version, and it never seemed all that bad as they make it sound. I'm sure we'll all be laughing at IGN's over-exaggerations of inferiority when the PS3 demo releases.

pixelsword5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

It's IGN, so I'm sorry to say that you may have to take their verdict with a grain of salt.

I have, at this point, no reason to doubt this; but I also have no reason to believe IGN.

nveenio5216d ago

Stupid Crytek. Set out to make more money and only wound up hurting their reputation. Now, Battlefield 3 will come out, and DICE will be the new king of graphics (on PC, at least). Crytek is just horrible at optimization. Seriously...people still use Crysis to benchmark hardware. If Crysis had been optimized, people would have stopped using it for benchmarks 2 years ago.

ProjectVulcan5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

Feel it looks poor on PC, at least the settings provided in the demo. I know they can't be max settings however as i kept an eye on my video memory usage and it only just broke 500mb. The original Crysis has no trouble at all eating up over twice that, 1.1GB video RAM. The image seems smeary and vaseline coated, not a nice thing when you play crisp PC titles all day long.

360 i was reasonably impressed with performance and how the game looked. The only real downside for me was the blur brought on by temporal AA. I think 360 gamers will be relatively happy with this title.

PS3 is the worry and always was. When the first video leaked out there seemed to be fair amounts of muddy textures popping in and wobbly framerates.

Crytek may have severely underdelivered on PC and PS3, we will have to reserve judgement until release day comes around however. It won't be long.

Agent VX5216d ago

"That said, my time with the PS3 version was sandwiched between the multiplayer demo on PC which, despite its own issues, understandably smokes its console cousins"

Nuff said... PC version FTW!!!

Cenobia5216d ago

@NathanWants2bMarcus

He is talking about the "best performing" version...that is always going to be on the PC. I am loving how you decide to limit the scope of the argument for no reason other than you feel like it.

Essentially you are both just trying to argue that the xbox still holds some value without any exclusives. Meanwhile I could plug an xbox controller into a PC and have 90% of the same games.

DavidBanner5216d ago

IGN quote"Our videos don't present this well because of the realities of HD video capture"..that's bull.
And what's funny is that they said so and we believe them, just like what they said about GT5 without playing the whole game.

limewax5216d ago

PC isnt much better. framerate is stable but thats about it. Was watching the multiplayer and SP leak at my GFs bros and well, I had to ask him why both versions said 'press start button' WTF Crytek?

Anyway its releasing DX9 and patching DX11 in, this is a lazy port on pc too

IcarusOne5216d ago

Luckily, the only thing that matters to the PS3 camp is exclusives.

Jinxstar5216d ago

@ Icarusone

hey ol' buddy hows it going? Me an you have had our bouts out here and I can say that I for one am a huge PS3 fanboy but so far this year all I have bought are multiplats. DC Universe, MvsC3 and dead space 2. Also in my top 5 upcoming are a few exclusives but batman AC is on my list of must buys. Heck I didn't even buy KZ3 cause I'm kinda burned out on FPS's in general.

We do love exclusives and we have so much variety in them(KZ3, UC3, Infamous2, Twisted Metal, TLG, etc...) and quality that it's hard not to feel like crytek did the lazy thing and "Make game on easy system then port" instead of build from the ground up like Batman AA or Burnout Paradise or a number of other good quality games that show that the capabilities are there... I know I wont support shoddy ports like the orange box was but I might now buy Portal 2 for PS3. I don't think anyone should support this. besides the first crysis wasn't even all that fun anyway... Very pretty on my PC but not all that fun...

KillerBBs5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

I knew it!
I think the 360 ver is not going to be much better. The Demo was CraP! but look nice... "dress up a PIG" comes to mind.

wsoutlaw875216d ago

well we all knew this would happen. they make pc games and the 360 is the most pc-like to develop for

finbars755216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

I have an xbox and I did give Crysis2 a go but was very disspointed in it.Maybe its because I have been playing Killzone 3 alot Im not sure but the layout of both maps are just WTF.The game looks good but not really up to par with what everyone else has been going on about.Maybe on the PC it looks stunning but on a console its just alright. There are cool things about the game I do like such as the Mirrors edge grab and pull yourself up or the slide. The guns all sound the same the nano suit is boring. If you have played Halo Reach well then there you go pretty much all those features are in Reach and the Melees look like they stole it from killzone3 just not as good actually not even close.I was going to buy this game for the SP but all the videos I have watched make it look boring.I felt like I was watching the start of 28days when he gets up and the city is empty.I think I will stick to Homefront considering that the guy who wrote the story for RED DAWN and Apocolypse Now did the story for Homefront.Oh well you never know maybe I will pick Crysis2 up for the hell of it just in case I need a break from other good games.

NukaCola5216d ago

What if EA is showing off gimped PS3 footage and then on release it will be the ultimate version with 3D, Move, Steam, Exclusive Content, etc just ot pull the ultimate troll on trolls? That would be funny.

In my honest opinion, even the PC version doesn't really blow me away. I mean yeah its sexy, but I am more interested in the Engine itself and what Mods can do with it.

frostypants5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

Programming for the PS3 separates the men from the boys. Guess we know which group Crytek falls into now.

Epic. Fail.

I wouldn't be so harsh if they hadn't been so cocky over the last few months. FWIW neither version really impresses me.

These dudes need to stick to the PC, where they can blame hardware configurations for the results of poor optimization. Hey, it worked for the first Crysis...

thorstein5216d ago

I already bought Homefront. And it is a shame that this doesn't look half as good as KZ3, UC2 (or 3) etc... etc.... etc...

It doesn't even look as good as Fallout.

DaTruth5216d ago

If this was somebody else, I would be worried, but ever since the dedicated link on Live for IGN, PS3 can do nothing right!

Surprise? Surprise?

No Really. I'm actually curious as to who is geniounly shocked by this?

I feel bad for people who were actually interested in this game for their PS3

http://n4g.com/news/702392/...

RBLAZE19885217d ago

lol i'm pretty interested in this game still. Go click on one of the videos ign has up for crysis 2 from GDC and tell me if you see frame rate issues. I'm still getting this game. PS3 gamers on the internet are a bunch of spoiled little whiners. When a game like killzone 3 comes out you guys say that it's the next coming but nobody ended up buying it. It sold 500,000 first week. Come on guys!?

If you guys cancel your pre orders cause some tool from IGN gave his opinion on the graphics then you guys are a bunch of easily controlled weak willed gamers. I bet it still looks amazing though...oh well you guys won't be playing cause some guy said it looks washed out. I wonder why most games that websites show as washed out on ps3 look awesome, crisp and contrast heavy on my tv...oh well.

nycredude5217d ago

I agree gamers in general are a bunch of whiners but since when is 500,000 first week bad? Besides it was VGchartz wasn't it?

Also I think IGN pretty have recently just removed themselves from the short list of gaing sites with any credibility.

enkeixpress
"Why not get it for the Xbox 360 instead then?"

Um cause I am getting the superior version on my PC! I guess your pc can't run it huh.

Pixelated_Army5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

@Rblaze

"Our videos don't present this well because of the realities of HD video capture, but more than one IGN editor confirmed similar thoughts to me after seeing Crysis 2 running on the PS3."

I see you're allergic to reading. And those numbers quoted buy VZcharts are full of shit. Sony doesn't share that info with anyone so how the f**k would VZcharts know how many copies KZ3 sold.

RBLAZE19885217d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

@ pixelated army do you know how easy it is for a group of people to form one opinion based on an initial bias or opinion. One guy says a game looks bad and has this happening, other people in the group start looking at it from that angle and agree with him based on a negative catalyst opinion. Ever studied sociology? If another person agrees and then 4 people agree with the initial consensus then chances are that the 5th person will agree since the 4 other people in the group agreed.

Just wait for the demo before you guys lose your minds like i have been saying for weeks. You guys don't listen to ign for reviews why does this all of a sudden affect you guys? They gave killzone 3 an 8.5 and most of you guys think it is a 9.5. You guys are really selective when it comes to when sites tell the truth and when they are bullshitting.

Death24945216d ago

VGChartz is a load of @#%! bro. There is a reason why there isn't any official numbers for EU. EU has way too many different currencies and governments. I highly doubt a site by (Former Neogaf member) has the ability to calculate EU sales. As far a America goes, I'd believe NPD since it's actually recognized by all big 3. MediaCreate officially does Japan's numbers.

vsr5216d ago

RBLAZE19885217d ago

Wow...your kind is rare among these parts. People on n4g making sense? Wtf?

Silly gameAr5216d ago

That's understandable but really man, how many times are we going to have to go through this?

Remember the hoopla over the differences between the 360 and PS3 versions of Bayonetta before launch? This feels like the same senario, expect Crytek actually had the nerve to reassure PS3 owners that things would be different.

That's the only thing I'm sore about. They made all of these promises, but waited until the last second to pull an Activision on us.

I'm disappointed more than anything.

pixelsword5216d ago

You're right shadow;

People should try it first because it's not like the saying "you can't spell ignorant without IGN" is a meaningless statement.

bwazy5216d ago

The PS3 version is probably the weakest of the three, but I take just about anything IGN puts out with a grain of salt. They often post some pretty exaggerated and biased content. Unfortunate that these kinds of things have become expected from what is supposed to be one of the top gaming sites on the net.

Crytek: "We have reached the peak in what consoles can do".

IGN: "The PS3 version of Crysis 2 is bad!"

????

Okay, if Crytek used every drop of the "consoles" power for Crysis 2 and the PS3 version is probably the worst version. Does this mean what I think it means??????

No surprises here.

Has Crytek ever done anything of note outside of click-to-create/paint-by-numbe rs DirectX world?

How embarrassing.

This is why Carmack was scared to make a game for the PS2 while console experts like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital and others made gorgeous games that made massive amounts of money.

Gamer_Z5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

I was worried about Crysis 2 since they weren’t really showing any gameplay for the PS3 version, I guess my doubts about the PS3 version were justified after all. Well guys I its official the PS3 version is gimped, I won’t be picking it up. I could pick this up for the Xbox but naaah i hate paying for live and i prefer gaming on my PS3 it’s just my preference, I think I’ll save that money for Brink. Anyways I think Crysis should be played on the PC that’s where this game will truly shine.

Jaces5216d ago

Hmm, it's a shame. I was looking forward to this but now....I think I'll take my money elsewhere.

I wouldn't mind getting it on my 360 but I don't feel that Crytek deserve my money when they can't properly deliver on BOTH platforms.

lil Titan5216d ago

thorstein5216d ago

SO... what else shouldn't I buy from Crytek.

pain777pas5216d ago

Let us suppose that this game gets a good review from IGN and is marked down for the PS3 since they did this article. The game then becomes a 360 exclusive of sorts because they have done this sort of thing before with orange box so i will admit that I did not play portal 1. If you like the game no matter the system... get it. It should be good enough to enjoy the experience on any platform at this point.

shadowknight2035217d ago

Seriously? Crytek's engine isn't built for consoles so much as it was for PC, 360 can get away with it with its singularities in programming design but for ps3, well that's a different story..And to say say anything about Bethesda's Skyrim going to be choppy when Oblivion in comparison to 360/ps3 wasn't bad at all is either pure idiocy or blasphemy or both.. for a company with so much experience with ps3 products now I can't imigine them screwing up now.... and I bet you wonder why you have 1 bubble dear sir.

Ducky5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

Judging by the demo, the multiplayer belongs on the 360.

Although, would someone happen to know if ModTools/SDK is announced for Crysis2? I'd think it'd be a no-brainer, but can't remember any recent news about it.
That might be a game-changer.

coldfoot5216d ago (Edited 5216d ago )

Unless you're a moron who thinks it's ok to pay for online multiplayer, it does not belong to 360. Get a game for the PS3, or if the port is bad, get it for the PC, since it's guaranteed to be better than any console version.

TheBatman_Fanatic5216d ago

Is that all 360 useres think about, multiplayer lol
I bet the people who wanted Arkham City to be multiplayer were 360 users lol

trancefreak5217d ago

I would you can get a 450 gts for close 2 a hundred bucks.

If this rings true i will not bother with the console version.

Man cervat yerli with all his guarantees that no one runs multi plats better than the cry engine 3 on the ps3.

In that dev interview they even stated they had sony techs for support. Oh well!

Death24945216d ago

I personally wouldn't be so quick to judge a game based off of IGN's opinion. From what I've seen, this article is in direct contradiction of the videos they posted. If there were any real framerate issues, it would have been apparent in the videos. Don't act like this is a million people saying it runs bad on ps3, it's just one. I say reserved your judgment for after you play the multiplayer demo next week.

SnakeMustDie5216d ago

I wouldn't recommend a 450 GTS because it's weaker than 290. Just get the X80-X90 GTX cards because those are the true enthusiast cards.

gypsygib5217d ago (Edited 5217d ago )

It's surprising, most EA published games are identical. I wasn't interested in buying the game anyways but at this point in the game, multiplats should be equal.

They'd be fools to release a FPS game that can't perform at 30 fps though.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142183d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2182d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
