Crytek: 'Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm have made Crysis 2 a better game'

Following on from part one of our interview, in which we focused on CryEngine3 and Crytek's desire to move beyond its FPS origins, we chat to CEO Cevat Yerli about the firm's first console game, the blockbuster shooter Crysis 2.

I have just tried the leaked beta and I have to say that they made the game too mainstream. The power are simplified into stealth, armor and power. Power is basically both maximum speed and maximum strength. It's not a bad thing though but kinda takes away the challenge especially maximum Armor makes you almost indestructible to gunfire except cannons of course. The graphics have definitely improved even though this is just the beta code of the game but it's clear that they just removed the destructible trees and huts(Love throwing Koreans onto those) just so they can make the game more beautiful.

Deleting the beta now and I hope Crysis 2 delivers. Anyway, the title is flamebait.

DigitalAnalog5225d ago

Website is CVG. Can you expect any less from them?

Don't blame CVG. Cevat Yerli from Crytek is one of the biggest shit talkers in the gaming industry.

zeksta5225d ago

Ghost, Your pretty much about right, but then again, most Turks are.

Don't get me wrong or racist, I myself am Turkish, but I know my kind, and they'll talk up anything they can.

starchild5225d ago

Read the actual interview. He didn't talk any shit whatsoever.

Crysis 2 is going to be killer. I can't wait to play it next month.

fredfenster5225d ago

Title is flamebait.

CVG: The delay meant you avoided going up against Call of Duty: Black Ops, but Crysis 2 will now release one month after Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm. Are you looking forward to the competition?

Crytek: Oh yes of course, always. We love competition. Without it no-one would be innovating. I think it keeps us in check, helps us make sure we don't get sloppy and are always on the cutting edge. I think Crysis 2 has benefited from that and so will consumers - because ultimately they'll get a game that is highly competitive.

"Don't blame CVG. Cevat Yerli from Crytek is one of the biggest shit talkers in the gaming industry. "

I like the guy, especially since his product backs his word up--although there is a species of fanboy that create a static in the airwaves that have people thinking otherwise because of their loud delusion, lol.

Kon5225d ago

Well, they had to remove some features to make the game more stable. Still, i'm impressed with the quality of this game.

ATiElite5225d ago

Crysis 2 is gonna sell a ton of units because of all the hype and consolers finally getting a crack at it.

Killzone 3 is so much better than Crysis 2 that it's almost sad to continue listening to Crytek blab at the mouth about there inferior product.

Killzone 3 destroys all until Battlefield 3 is released. Crysis was dumbed down way too much and is a Far Cry from what it once was on the PC. see what I did there!

RBLAZE19885225d ago

Oh god would you stop. Wait to play the game before you blindly shut it out for no reason.

starchild5225d ago

Killzone 3 is a decent game, nothing more. PS3 fanboys like yourself are deluded. Killzone 3 doesn't do anything unique. It's like playing in a boring shooting gallery where you just wait until the little Helghast soldiers stick their heads up over the blocks. 85 metacritic, 'nuff said.

Even a "dumbed down" Crysis 2 is still vastly more exciting than the generic gameplay of Killzone 3.

If you were a real PC gamer you would be excited for Crysis 2.

Ducky5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

^ Not really agreeing with that last sentence. I consider myself a PC gamer (and I hope I'm not a figment of both of our imaginations), and don't really feel all that excited about Crysis2.

Neither do I share any great excitement about most FPS games in general since they seem to be caught in a quagmire of genericness.
KZ3 and Crysis2 are/will-be decent games. As will probably be Homefront. They fall into the same bin for me.

However, the constant bragging Crytek does is getting me irked. I'll agree with AtiElite on the 'crytek-being-full-of-them selves' part (although they didn't behave arrogantly in the interview... in fact, I kinda liked the response he gave regarding competition).
Then again, I haven't seen the finished product. Maybe they have reason to brag about their work.
I don't really think he's a PS3Fanboy though judging from his comment history.

Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to Brink, and that's about it. =/

cyborg475225d ago

ah..heres the idiot!..
who thinks he already completed crysis2, kz3, battlefield 3....

TruthBTold5224d ago

Yeah, I think all FPS games tend to be too similar to one another but that is due to just how limited the creativity can be with gameplay unlike 3rd person shooters which give more room for developers to add more things to change the gamepley more. IMO TPS>FPS but I know others prefer the other way around. Enjoy what you like. Not everyone needs to like the same style or game. I am looking more forward to uncharted 3 and gears of war.

ATiElite5223d ago

Well lets see KZ3 is out, Crysis 2 PC has already been out. KZ3 is a better game.

Now when I compare Crysis 2 to Crysis 1 Crysis 1 wins because Crysis 2 is so dumbed down that it is a boring arcade experience with stupid alien AI.

At least the KPA would hide, flank, use grenades and track you down across the whole map. The AI in c2 just do pre programmed moves, stand out in the open with there back to you, half the time they look confused. Crysis 2 is WHACK!!

as far as BF3 when has DICE made a bad game, NEVER! BF is their Half Life which means perfection every time.

Im gonna buy this but Im still trippin off of Bf3!!
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
idk alot PC gamers seem to like it and praise the game but I have to play it first!! 6 days till the PC demo!!

Why do people read the edited title & not read the article!!
this is what was said!

The delay meant you avoided going up against Call of Duty: Black Ops, but Crysis 2 will now release one month after Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm. Are you looking forward to the competition? -cvg

I think Crysis 2 has benefited from that and so will consumers - because ultimately they'll get a game that is highly competitive.

On the other hand, [Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm] are great games generally and I think people will enjoy one or the other, and since they're shipping in February and Crysis 2 is in March, I think there's plenty of room for a lot of strong games in the next few months.- yerli

he shows love to kz3 & bs what's so bad about that??
why hate on a fps that has features (like sandbox & nano suit)other fps's don't? if you don't want the product ignore it's existence that all!

Holeran5225d ago

"Is it on one disk on Xbox 360?"

"Yes, and that might be only because we're compressing the hell out of it."

That statement there kind of spooks me.

Gamer_Z5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

Exactly it’s not like the PC it looks like crap on the consoles and I’m going to strait out say it, it's because of the Xbox 360 and DVD9. You guys say 360 can do whatever the PS3 can do but where are the games that look like KZ, God of war, inFAMOUS 2 Resistance 3 and Uncharted? There are no games on the 360 that look like those games I know I been playing 360 ever since it came out and not one game on 360 look as good as those games not one.

@Norio "crysis 2 running on xbox 360 look better than any game on ps3" <_< hmmm well i can say Black Ops for the wii looks better then any other game on the 360, see what i did there.

5225d ago
Ducky5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

Err... but there really isn't that big of a co-relation between storage space and in-game graphics.

I suppose having more space would allow for bigger textures and fancier geometry, but it wouldn't matter since the hardware itself doesn't have enough memmory to handle it.
So I don't think the limited storage space is keeping the game back visually. Or at least, not by any significant margin.

This is why some of the best looking PC games aren't really that big in size.

Holeran5225d ago

Norio you are dilusional if you believe your statements, and it wasn't like I was only concerned about graphics, when you compress audio a bunch it down right sucks and cut scenes will suffer also, but yes textures too will take a hit when you are talking large scale environments.

baodeus5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

It looks pretty good, although i'm not too fond of FPS, but it sure looks interesting. Let wait and see.

@gamer_Z

Here are some videos and pictures of RE5, you can compare to any PS3 games (UC2, KZ2/KZ3, God of War) video/pictures and see if they looks better in (up close texture, lighting, explosion, etc..):

u sure there are none? dude take off your fanboy goggles man, how can u see anything w/ that on?

and please post something to back up ur claim. u guys never back up ur shits, not even some pictures or vid, but keep repeating the same BS 4 how many years now? This same stupid line: nothing beat KZ,UC,GoW,etc....been using it over and over man, do u have anything original? I mean are u guys going to the same Sony fanboy training camp and that is all they teach you guys?

If you can prove what you claim for once, i would be happy to hear it.

baodeus5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

@gamer_Z

Then why don't u (or anyone for that matter) post some pictures/vids and compare them (Texture, lighting, particles, motion blur, what ever). This is purely opinionated based entirely on how it looks to you and I'm not even asking for any technical aspect either. We can discuss this matter right?

How can we confirm/support your claim if you don't even show anything? Am i suppost to just take your word for it based on your credibility (which hasn't been proven either)?

This is getting rediculous. Are we in the habit of making a statement w/ nothing to back it up? This is just sad and funny at the same time.

Holeran5225d ago

And I get a disagree why? Maybe because whoever disagreed was uneducated as to the effects of (overly compressed material)?

5225d ago
humbleopinion5225d ago

I think that because you misinterpret "compression" as "loss of quality":
ZIP files for example are compressed. Do you lose anything from your Word document of from your TIFF image once you compress it in a zip file and then extract it?

You should only be concerned if the compression affects the final quality - of textures for example. But since consoles have a relatively low video memory, you can't have the top quality textures in the first place.

I think that Carmack already said in the past the the uncompressed Rage would take something unimaginable - like 1TB. But what is the point of that if the hardware can't cope anyway?

Holeran5224d ago

Totally different realm Humble, I do know at the very least the effects of compression on audio as I have recorded bands for years. When you dither audio content down you not only lose a great amount of dynamics but you also lose a lot of the "air" surrounding the audio, many might not know what that means or what it equates to but people that have worked with audio all thier lives know fully well what I am talking about and it's not pretty.

palaeomerus5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

" Killzone 3 is so much better than Crysis 2 that it's almost sad to continue listening to Crytek blab at the mouth about there inferior product. "

Actually after Sev and Narville get captured Killzone 3 turns pretty damned silly. And I mean that in a "bad James Bond movie" sense. Hopefully Crysis 2 can holds it's shit together through the whole campaign better than Killzone 3 did.

TruthSeeker5225d ago

I don't care what he says, they are both great games, ill be getting both Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072184d ago (Edited 2184d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142184d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2183d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted2184d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster2184d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack2184d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH2179d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
