IGN: A Tale of Redemption - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

Wind Waker has gone from Zelda's whipping boy to a fan favorite. Here's a look back at how the public opinion of Wind Waker has changed over the years.

I love Wind Waker. These are some of the best graphics and one of the most unique art styles ever in any form of media. I have yet to see toonshading used like this in any other game. This was a style of cellshading that just took my breath away. I would really love to play something epic done with toonshading in true HD.

2nd best Zelda game after Ocarina of Time.

Childhood memories, wish I could go back 8 9 years and play this game and Pikmin as a kid!

bananlol5225d ago

its my favourite, then again its the only 3d zelda i really like.

ChickeyCantor5225d ago

Meh, LTTP > OOT.
Windwaker is my favorite 3D zelda.
Its zelda as it should be! ( graphically )

Very good game. The gameplay is solid to fantastic. Art design though is genius and is totally playable today for that reason alone.

I greatly enjoyed Wind Waker. I enjoyed the more open world gameplay and the freedom to explore.

Loved the Wind Waker. Definitely one of my favorite Zelda games. Happy to say I was one of the supporters of its controversial art style pre-launch.

Much better than the formulaic non-innovating, Ocarina-lite follow-up called Twilight Princes

ChickeyCantor5225d ago

I wouldn't go that far.
Twilight princess still had a unique style to it. It just doesn't last as Wind Waker.
And saying no innovation was involved doesn't make sense either since you are basing the innovation on art ...

A7XEric5224d ago

TP's art style wasn't what i was referring to. When I said lack of innovation I meant in terms of how the game played. It was just a very by-the-numbers, safe, Zelda game.

I still like Twilight Princess (since it is still a Zelda game after all), but the whole time I played the game I had that "been there, done that" feeling.

Si-Fly5225d ago

My favourite Zelda and the only one I completed lol! My mates thought it looked gay at the time but I think it had an amazing look and I just loved the travelling in the boat discovering new islands and fishing for treasure.

I'd put Street Fighter 2 over 3. 2 and all its different versions dominated the arcade scene back in the day in a way that 3 never did.

Abear21581d ago

Agreed, Same with Metal Gear Solid imo. Came for Bioshock and was not disappointed. Would easily put Burger Time or Space Taxi over tempest. Also, OG Sim City and Oregon Trail. Mario 64 as well. Just too many!

Abear21581d ago

Never played it I gotta get on this one

Double_O_Revan581d ago

Me too. I didn't have a GC until way later and never played it. I've been waiting on Nintendo to release the HD edition on the Switch for forever, but they just won't!

FinalFantasyFanatic580d ago

I never bought a Gamecube, I've always had an urge to play this game, maybe it'll get a remaster in the future.

LoveSpuds580d ago

I played it on WiiU for the first time and it remains my fave Zelda game to date. So much character and a real sense of exploration without the open world bloat.

Petebloodyonion581d ago

Ms Pacman?
Robotron?
SSF2 Turbo over 3 simply by the 10000000000's ports of the game we're still having
Castlevania SOTN?
Zelda Link to the Past over Wind Waker
Super Mario Bros 3?
Chrono Trigger?
Resident evil4?
COD MW2 (the original)?
Uncharted 2
Metal Gear Solid?

Here's my reasoning for all of them versus the list proposed in the article.
They are still quite enjoyable from start to finish on their original platform, unlike some Wind Waker or Okami that are fun when you play the remastered version (unless you call: forced to watch a 20-minute cutscene or have to blow for wind chance constantly fun).
Some of them are the pinnacle of what the console could do (MGS, Chrono, MGS)
Lots of them are still considered the go-to-go game for their genre.

Said it before but Heart of Darkness is truly a timeless gem.
